With the recent KLove love/hate about his selection to the AS Game (along with Timmy Duncan), I have started some research of my own to find out what the qualifications are to get into the AS game.

I hope to have the results posted before the All-Star Game.  If any of you all are Statistics majors and can help me interpret the data then that would be great.

As of right now, I have compiled a list of all of the AS players from the 1996 to the 2011 AS game, that is 15 years of games, not including 1999 since there was no game that year. I have given each player an allstar status, such as, Starter (voted in), reserve, or replacement (selected by the commish).  Next I have started to track down the date in which each player was named to the all-star team, mostly through old press releases. With this date, I am able to track down the respective player’s team’s W/L record as of that date.  I am using this site for this purpose: http://www.shrpsports.com/nba/stand.htm.

Also, upon obtaining the date in which the player was picked to the team, I can use that date, to total up the players stats up to that date.  Basketball-Reference.com has game logs for every season for every player, so I will be this site as a reference for stats.

I am still in search for more variables for this research project, so if you all can give some input that would be great.

    So far I have:

    • W-L record as of date selected
    • Typical stat averages: PPG, RPG, APG, FG%, etc….

I think a column for how many years the player has been in the league up to that All-Star game would be helpful as well.  If anyone sees any problems with how I am going about this, please let me know.  I would hate to spend time doing this, only to have some major flaw that makes all my research meaningless.

I like the way you are going about it Jamie. Their are always variables that are kind of unquantifiable, but maybe even past achievement or previous All-Star selections should be a part of it. I forget who’s column I was reading, and I remember at the time disagreeing with the person, but they seemed to have a formula for All-Stars in which if a multiple All-Star was going up against a potential first time All-Star, you take the multiple All-Star every time. I guess I could see the logic in that now, though it is hard to tell when a player has bottomed out for a first time All-Star to surpass them. However, the more accomplished a player is during their career, it is much easier to make a case for them, especially if their team is winning. You could maybe even take into account players who might have been snubbed during said years. Nonetheless, I look forward to the results and think it is really cool that you are doing this.

Thanks for the input. I agree, past achievements and past All-Star game counts would be important to add as well.

I would like to involve the snubbed players somehow, but so far I want to see the data for players who did make it. Maybe I could still find some data on those players who got snubbed and just see how their data matches up with the players who made it over them.
