midwestbbscoutParticipantI was just looking in a magazine and it had a list of the top 50 players of all time….I noticed that that list also includes 6 of the worst GMs ever…..and only one that has done a good job….now this speaks to people who always ask me how I think I know everything but I never even played in High School…..teams who want to continue this hiring practice will continue to be the Wizards, Knicks, etc……
thoughts????

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantWho would possibly want Jerry West, Pat Riley, Joe Dumars, or Danny Ainge as their GM? Those rings are just so gawdy.

midwestbbscoutParticipantJordan, Isaiah, Bird, Elgin Baylor, Wes Unseld…..I forget the other one….

midwestbbscoutParticipantI was talking about superstar players…..I think they spent their whole life on the court and never had time to actually watch the game as a whole….except Jerry West he’s an exception…..

midwestbbscoutParticipantno I wouldn’t want Joe Dumars…..he of the biggest f*ck up in draft history….

Ghost01ParticipantWell, look at John Paxson. I mean he made horrible move after horrible move, failed to reel in Lebron or D Wade to a major market with a rising superstar, but still looks like a genius because he lucked into the no.1 pick in 2008.

midwestbbscoutParticipantI used to be a Pax fan but he’s gettin on my freakin nerves lately…..Danny Ainge was the beneficiary of the decade of sorryness before him but I give him credit for having guts enough to pull the trigger on the Garnett and Ray Allen trades….
to me the mark of a good GM is the ability to build in the draft….its the only way to ensure long term success and the only guy you named above that does that is West and Ainge (kind of but he isn’t one of the best)…..that’s why the Pistons suck a big fat one right now…..because they built all their good teams from trades which in turn mortgages the future…..
I just think there is a huge misconception that you have to have been an elite player to be able to evaluate talent…..its kind of an old boys network and that is a reason there are so many teams in shambles right now….

I completely agree and will go one step further. In most sports, it’s the marginal player, who gets by on his understanding of the game as opposed to elite talent, that usually makes the best GM, coach, or Manager.

HitsterParticipantBeing a talent evaluator is perhaps almost harder than being a coach and just because you were an elite player doesn’t mean that you can run a front office or effectively make business decisions as regards salary and trades etc.
Jerry West was certainly the best GM amongst the HOF front office guys, Danny Ainge was probably on his way out of the Celtics until he pulled off the KG and Ray Allen moves in 2007 to be the springboard for Boston’s revivial.
Kevin McHale apart from drafting KG didn’t have a great front office record and Larry Bird has not brought huge success to the Pacers even when he had Donnie Walsh to help guide him.

midwestbbscoutParticipantthanks for reminding me of the 6th guy Hitster……it actually seems kind of racist to me too actually…..like lets hire all the white guys who can shoot as our front office people….and I’m as white as they come so don’t come at me with it…..like really, I love him….but what qualified Steve Kerr to be the head of a front office???? Maybe people got sick of listening to him as an analyst where he was also god awful….

mikeyvthedonParticipantWas made up for in the Rasheed Wallace trade. I have gone into this before, but you should believe it. No Sheed, no championship. No Darko, no Sheed. I really believe this to be true, and the dude won the Pistons a ring and made a core full of players teams did not want and made them competitive for quite a while. Say what you will, the guy was a pretty solid GM for quite a while. A lot of it is about circumstance, but I would not at all say you should not hire former NBA players, great or otherwise, as your GM’s. Jerry West and Pat Riley are two of the best ever, and I would rather have many NBA players as my GM over David Kahn and Rob Babcock.
