JoeWolf1I’ve seen the D-League changing significantly over the last couple years. More and more first round picks are being sent down to play in favor of limited minutes or DNP- CD’s on their teams. This was extremely rare 3 or 4 years ago and I think teams are really realizing some of the potential advantages the D-League has. Jonny Flynn will be playing there to adjust from coming back from an injury in a very similar way to major league pitchers do.
This is the first time I can remember a starting caliber player being brought back through the D-League, and I think it’s smart. Let your player get his legs back and play competitive basketball. I think sending 1st round picks and players coming back from injuries improves the caliber of the D-League too. I only can predict the D-League adding more teams while NBA teams continue to realize the many advantages a minor league system can have for an organization.

delfamParticipantwonder why B.J. Mullens isn’t in the D-League, he’s seem like a prime candidate.

JoeWolf1@delfam, He played there pretty much all last season and did pretty well, I can only assume they want him to travel and learn with the team on a day to day basis this season even if he doesn’t get a lot of minutes.
They sent Aldrich down recently, It looks like they are taking the same strategy with him as they did with Mullins although I feel Aldrich is more NBA ready even as a rookie than Mullins, but maybe they just want him to get some minutes.

PureshooterParticipantGood post. I’ve noticed that it has become more of a true development tool lately, rather than just the place that players with no hope are relegated for minimal pay. It seems like there are more quality young players being sent there, probably to make sure they stay sharp with the increased playing time or to actually develop certain skills.

McDunkinI agree Joewolf its improved alot compared to 3-4 seasons ago when things like players somehow being drafted twice was happening.
I just wish the major attention it does get from ESPN/TNT didnt make it look like such a punishment to be sent down( hasheem thabeet and terrence williams) instead of a way to improve your game and get real playing time.

stanford hoopsYea i can see more and more rookies and young players being sent down. I dont think we will ever see a star or Andrew Bynum, Greg Oden being sent down there because teams will not wanna risk a injury

bkb77ParticipantYa it a few years but the NBDL is starting to take shape & develope into like a NBA (AAA) club for player devolpment & as rehab assaignments for injured player. I think that with the way that its going there should be 2 or 3 new teams next year & u might see more players who are acedemically inelligable & guys want to play for money go to the D-League instead of overseas & college.

stanford hoopsI dont see More Dleague teams being created. I see some getting the Axe. The owners and David Stern are complaining about how much money they are losing and cutting into the Players salaries and creating/running a Dleague team takes alot of money. Its not like they are making money off of it either because there are more fans at alot high school then there is a Dleauge game. And I’m guessing but i bet the players will/are saying " You telling us you wanna take some of our pay because you are losing money but you have enough money to create a team"

canesboy6ParticipantIf the new CBA raises the minumum age to 20 or 2 years removed from high school, I expect alot more kids to o the d-league path. It worked for Latavious Williams. I think it is a solid plan B to college, some kids just dont belong in a classroom and kids should have the option to turn pro as soon as their body is ready to be a pro. You never know when an injury is gonna come.
I think every team needs their own D-league team for the system to fully work, 5-10 years down the line. They do a good job of putting the teams in small markets that don’t have a pro team to distract them. If they market the league better, and find ways to improve the talent level, it could be better and more exciting than baseballs minor leagues.

MuggsyParticipantGood post, I love the DLeague and always thought it was a great idea. I think it’s good that starting caliber players are going ot the DLeague to polish up or work through an injury. Hasheem Thabeet seemed to be the starting point where teams were sending bigger names down. I think I heard Anotnio Daniels is in the DLeague, he may be older but he can still ball, better to be in DLeague than sitting at home waiting for someone to sign you.

sheltwon3ParticipantI like what the Dleague is growing to and I wish they could make some money because I think every thing needs a d League team to develop your players. The Dleague has helped players like Sessions, and other get the minutes and play time needed to develop so they could contribute in the NBA. I wish in the past more guys went there so they would still be in the league today.
