Kevin Durant doesn’t mind taking a back seat when Russell Westbrook is taking over a game in crunch time.

Westbrook scored 12 of his 25 points during a decisive 14-0 run late in the fourth quarter and also had 11 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied to beat the New Orleans Hornets 95-89 on Monday night.

"This is the new Russell," Durant said. "He’s just taking over games and controlling the games. That’s what we need for us to win."

Westbrook scored six in a row to tie the game, then kept going with a driving layup and a 3-pointer that put the Thunder up 88-81 with 1:38 to play. After the 3-pointer, he mocked slamming guns down into holsters at his side.

"Sometimes when my teammates are down and not making shots, it’s an opportunity for me to be able to step up and help us win the game," Westbrook said.

Westbrook has been the go-to guy down the stretch for Oklahoma City recently with Durant and Jeff Green struggling to knock down shots consistently. Over the past three games, Durant and Green are a combined 37-for-109 (34 percent) from the field.-espn

I’ll probably get negatives for this, but Westbrook is a better closer than Durant. A MUCH better closer.

I went to the Pacers vs OKC game and Westbrook had me jumping out of my seat. He’s relentless attacking the basket and his jumpshot is better than what people think.

    They’re creeping up fast.

All I know is that while Durant is the player who got all of the MVP hype, it’s been Westbrook who’s been playing like an MVP. His growth as a player has been incredible, and unlike Durant, he looks VERY comfortable when the game is on the line.

I would still want the ball in Keviin Durant’s hand at the end of a game unless he has had an off night and Westbrook is not.

IF it’s an isolation situation, I’m putting that ball in Westbrook’s hands. I’d tell him to penetrate and score, or kick it out to Durant.

Westbrook should be credited for OKCs success so far this season. I have him in nearly every fantasy league I am in (3 of 4) and Ive been watching him all year. At the beggining of the ye4ar I rejected trades for him including a Deron Williams trade, and I even traded Carmelo Anthony for him. It has all payed off and he is definitely looking like the sky is the limit. If Durant gets an MVP vote this year Westbrook should get 2.

Never in my wildest dreams did I forsee how good Westbrook would become, especially so quickly.  He didn’t even handle the ball very much at UCLA because they had Collison.  I saw him like a small version of Sprewell, a player without much skill set that could straight up ball because of their athletic abilities.  This guy has turned into a great PG.
