valentineKnicks’ Anthony Randolph will have non-triumphant return to Oakland on the bench BY MITCH LAWRENCE DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Saturday, November 20th 2010, 4:00 AM Simmons/News Anthony Randolph (left) defends against Washington’s Gilbert Arenas Nov. 6.
The newly signed Knick won’t see as much action in his bench role Friday in Oakland. RELATED NEWS Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni gets tepid support from team president Disgruntled Jeffries hints at Knick return Amar’e: Heat aren’t the only show in Fla. Gallinari shoots way to bench in 4th quarter Optimism abounds as Knicks open campaign Landry may be second-to-none on Knicks SAN FRANCISCO – Anthony Randolph came to the Knicks in the David Lee sign-and-trade with a limited resume, a great deal of potential and a habit of looking over at his team’s bench whenever he did something wrong on the court. He’s kicking the habit – but only because it appears he’ll be bolted to Mike
D’Antoni’s bench for the foreseeable future, including Friday night, when the Knicks play his former team, Golden State, in Oakland. Talk about a non-triumphant return. It’s almost a given that when a player returns to his old haunts for the first time, he’ll get a chance to show his former team that it was wrong to trade him. But Mike D’Antoni can’t afford such luxuries, not as he’s being judged on wins and losses for the first time as Knicks coach. With his team stumbling out of the gate and badly needing a win in Sacramento, D’Antoni took the struggling Randolph out of his bench rotation Wednesday night before the Knicks broke their six-game losing streak against the dysfunctional Kings. "I told him, right now, this is all about the team and I’ve got to go with my gut and he might play and he might not," D’Antoni said. "Right now, it’s all about the Knicks. We’ll worry about individuals after we get out of the hole a little bit. And then we’ll start talking about long-term strategies. But right now, it’s just to win today." That last comment indicates better than anything else that D’Antoni can’t afford to invest minutes in a 21-year-old project when the Knicks are losing. In the limited time Randolph has been getting (about 11 minutes a game), he invariably has followed his mistakes by looking over to the bench to check D’Antoni’s reaction, just as he did playing across the Bay for Don Nelson. Randolph’s
first month as a Knick can’t compare to the splash Lee has made, including a triumphant return to the Garden nine days ago and contributing to the Warriors’ 5-0 home record. But Golden State’s new $80 million power forward is out for up to three weeks with an infected left elbow, an injury he sustained when he banged into Wilson Chandler’s tooth, causing a puncture wound and the spread of bacteria in his elbow.

HitsterParticipantCoach D’Antoni has to go for results now and cannot afford to use Randolph if he’s not performing, he can keep him in rotation by giving him garbage minutes but unless the game is won then this isn’t good for the Knicks. Also if Randolph keeps looking to the bench when he has made a mistake then the opposition will pick up on this look to utilize his match up and force negative reactions towards the Knicks bench.

NYK2010ParticipantAR looks lost out there at times, if Turiaf is healthy no way is AR getting minutes.
Also Chandler is playing well he’s more of threat down low than him.

stanford hoopsLol@coach needs to be fired because Randolph isn’t good enough to get playing time just like in golden state. This seems like the Darko thing all over again. Every team he goes to and doesn’t play some people are gonna blame the coach instead of blaming the OVERRATED player

torontoraptors10ParticipantQuestion…. Do you think Anthony Randolph’s image of him looking lost on the basketball court has to do with his previous coaches? With Don Nelson, I THINK he didn’t play that much (correct me if I’m wrong) and I know he missed a year when he was with Golden State. I’ve never watched a Warriors game in my life, but from what I have read, Nelson didn’t like rookies. Now we come to New York and D’Antoni is doing the same thing to Randolph, showing no confidence in his abilities and just putting him on the bench when he isn’t playing well. I think D’Antoni is an “ignorant” coach, and when I say that he is very one minded and doesn’t like to give other players a chance, ex: Al Harrington when he was in NY. Once his mind is set on something, it is hard to change it.
I personally feel, Randolph needs a “Beasley Situation,” where he can actually play through his mistakes and learn the game properly. I agree, it is time to fire D’Antoni.

nateoak10ParticipantIts not that hes not good enough but he went from Nellie to Dantoni, the same system, the same coach basically. Nellie hated AR and played Mikki Moore before him even though AR would outperform him clearly, same in NY. Whenever he plays he snatches rebounds and brings ton of energy, but Wilson Chandler at PF seems smart to Dantoni… he needs to go to Denver in a Melo trade to be with a decent coach

nateoak10Participantyour sorta right, Nellie hated him. Just like he hated CWebb, he does need a Beasly situation, he needs to get out of the run and gun system cause it doesnt teach him to slow down. He was very good heree when treated fairly. If he was at that

BasketballGuruBut Anthony Randolph is suppose to thrive in Dantonies and Nellie’s system. He’s a long and athletic cornerman that can run and gun. This is his perfect system and he can’t perform well under it? What kind of offense does he need then? This is the easiest offense and he’s shown that he failed at it, twice.

nateoak10ParticipantMaybe in a couple years he can be a fast offense but right now he’s not ready for it, the Spurs would be PERFECT for him, it’s the easiest offense for smart players, hes not very smart. Denver would be a good spot for him with Billups, he needs a leader to look up to and a system that will teach him to not fly everywhere. If he were to play in a fast paced system you cant keep benching him, let him play through the mistakes like Beasley.

TooNice4TVParticipantDefinitely fire D’antoni.
You have to think if he couldn’t get it done with Nash, Johnson, Q-Rich, Marion, and Stoudemire, or the core of Nash, Marion, and Stoudemire for years, what makes you think he can do it with these guys on the Knicks? What a joke.
Get a real coach, cause fast breaks can only get you to the playoffs – NOT championships.
Just like Golden State, now they’re headed in the right direction under a coach who is defensive minded as well instead of their Don Nelson type of game.

BasketballGuruD’antoni’s style of play won’t win you a championship, but why doesn’t anybody admit, AR isn’t good at all. All I hear is potential, potential, potential with this kid. Not once have I heard someone say, "Oh his basketball IQ is through the roof" "Have you seen how much he hustles" "He has a great motor!"
I’ve NEVER heard that, all I hear is "It’s the coach, Fire Nelson and D’antoni" "He needs a fresh start" "This system is not fit for his style of play"
How about… HE’S NOT GOOD WHATSOEVER! How about that? Never thought of that? If a player can’t thrive in a system that seems perfect for him, since he has no basketball IQ, no defense, and his offensive game is no where to be found, you would think that a system that doesn’t require you to think or play defense would help him.. He’s failed at the easiest system in the league.. twice. Give it a rest, this kid is no good.

stanford hoopsCan’t compare him and beasly situation because beasley is better. It’s not the coachs because other players and rookies thrive in the coachs system. The problem is the player. He doesn’t have a high basketball iq and reports are he doesn’t work hard nor work on his game much. That’s a player problem not a coach problem. He has talent like most NBA players but he’s not mentally ready nor talented enough to beat out other good players and he will have that problem everywhere he goes. He’s not mentally or physically better then any other starter and most backups on any other team at his position. People need to stop making excuses for the guy and accept the reality that he isn’t that good right now. He should get better because he’s young but that’s not a sure thing. Talent is talent and no matter who the coach is talent rises to the top. The thing I like about Nelson is he played who ever earned the time. Vets, rookie,d leauger. If you produced you played reguardless who you’re name was. Some thought Randolph should start because of his draft status and name. Sorry didn’t work that way. Marrow and Reggie Williams played alot and started. Both were undrafted and Reggie was a d leauger. They earned there time in practice and the game. It wasn’t handed to them and it shouldn’t be handed to Randolph. It has nothing to do with coachs not liking him. Coachs like to win and they put out players who they feel will give them the best chance to win and watching Randolph you see he doesn’t give you the best chance to win over other guys. He hurts you more then he helps you compared to other players who will help you more.

torontoraptors10ParticipantWhat I meant from a “Beasley Situation” is that, what NateOak said, he needs to go to a slower paced environment and maybe a few years down the road he will be able to play in an high octane offense. He needs the grasp of the game and learn from his mistakes
You mentioned,
“The problem is the player. He doesn’t have a high basketball iq and reports are he doesn’t work hard nor work on his game much. That’s a player problem not a coach problem. Don’t you think how his coaches and management treat him will have a mental affect? I mean if you’re always in a coach’s doghouse, it’s going to get to you. If he is being benched for every mistake he does and an injury that has set you back a year is DEFINITELY going to take an affect on you. Whether Don Nelson plays players who give it there all, it most relys on the coach to bring out the best in their players right? I mean if they can’t do that for Randolph, the fault is going to lie on the coach. He played one year at LSU, was fairly young and he was put into a tough position where they can’t break through mentally.

torontoraptors10ParticipantWhat I meant from a “Beasley Situation” is that, what NateOak said, he needs to go to a slower paced environment and maybe a few years down the road he will be able to play in an high octane offense. He needs the grasp of the game and learn from his mistakes
You mentioned,
“The problem is the player. He doesn’t have a high basketball iq and reports are he doesn’t work hard nor work on his game much. That’s a player problem not a coach problem. He has talent like most NBA players but he’s not mentally ready nor talented enough to beat out other good players and he will have that problem everywhere he goes.”
He played one year at LSU, was fairly young and he was put into a tough position where they can’t break through mentally.

stanford hoopsYea for those who are weak mentally and if you have a player who can’t play through getting yanked you don’t want him out there. The NBA isn’t a baby sitting leauge. If you can’t handle things like that you don’t deserve to play. That simple. And he’s not yanked for just one mistake. He makes many mistakes plus there are players who produce more so they should play more. No more excuses for the guy. He has gotten the time he deserves. He has put his self in the position he’s in. No one is gonna baby him and say” oh you have so much potential so imma play you” nope doesn’t work that way. I wouldn’t play him either with the mistakes he has made. He’s actually getting more of the benifit of the doubt because if it wasn’t for his so called potential he wouldn’t be in the dog house he would be in the d leauge.

Looking at stats on paper and looking at the player play with your eyes is two totally different things if you watch him he just isnt good

stanford hoopsMentally soft ( down on his self because he gets yanked out or always looking to the bench). Any basketball watcher knows you don’t just go by stats. You actually watch a player and you can see all you need to see about what type of player they are
How about stop making excuses for his lack of importance to the game and look at reality. Some players are ballets who work hard and earn minutes without the hype and dealing with the same coach while dealing with harder competition for there spot(landry fields, marrow,Reggie Williams). While others live off of hype potential and have fans make excuses for why he can’t get minutes on two different teams and counting
Who ever said he’s just as good or better than blatche and beasly really needs there head examined

Soulrebel15ParticipantCan we please stop this fire D’Antoni campaign. look I understand the Knicks have been horrid since his tenure, but how many coaches could have won anything significant with the talent the Knicks had in recant years? Chris Duhon was the starting PG, the only thing he was good at was pick and roll, could he at least hit an open J from time to time! it’s clear some of you don’t watch Knicks games, because they don’t constantly run D’Antoni’s system, they barely run much less run the 7 second or less offense. And when the go half court offense Felton does not run the pick and roll efficient better yet properly.
I will say this, this current Knicks team looks at times like the dysfunctional unit of the past now thats on the coach.
As for Randolph, he always has that deer in the head lights look. It’s always the same thing here’s the formula; stupid/careless turnovers, bad shot selection, and finally horrible fouls. You can’t put all that on the coaching staff, but then you see him put his complete game together and it blows you away. I will say this for Randolph he is still young and is still finding his true game, yeah I know kind of as cop out. But as I recall many people on this site labeled Andray Blatche as a bust and look at him now.

nateoak10ParticipantThe reason he can do better in a slow one cause he isnt SMART enough to make the right decisions in the open floor, in a set offense he’d have to LEARN to be smart, if he’d get a half average coach he’d be a beast. I think I have probably the most insight here on him after watching him for 2 years and having somewhat of a personal connection (friend of a friend). How many times have you guys actually watched him?

stanford hoopsWe all have seen him enough to know he’s not as good as you think he is. All you do is make excuses for him. You’re biased. It’s that simple. He’s not as good as you want him to be. Face facts. All you ever say is if this or if that or maybe this or that. Just accept reality. If I had millions I’d be rich but I don’t so I have to make due with what I have. If you have to have a certain coach to make a player good then it’s obvious the player isn’t that good. Many of us have NBA tv/leauge pass. So we have watched how inconsistant, low iq, player that Anthony randolph is. I think it’s time u just accept the reality and understand he’s not that good right now. The knicks aren’t always in fast break mode and since u watch him you should know he actually plays worst when he’s in half court sets

nateoak10ParticipantNot defending him, stating what he needs. And saying Marion is low IQ is really, really, really ignorant. Just cause he’s a athletic player that you probably dont watch a lot…….
Answer the question: How much of AR have you watched? Wide open systems are controlled chaos, not pure chaos. there harder to play in cause you have to think and react faster, look at someone like Belinelli, went from 2 fast break teams and struggled to a slower team and has shown he can play in the NBA as a starter.

sheltwon3ParticipantIt is early and AR will get time to learn the system in practice and will be on the bench until he can get things down pat. I think they need his length and shotblocking but if he can not stay on point in the offense, he is a liability. His long term is still good but right now, D’Antoni has a lot of players he can play. I think pretty soon AR can get the Russian’s minutes becaue he also needs some seasoning but he is a bigger body though.

I think pretty soon AR can get the Russian’s minutes becaue he also needs some seasoning but he is a bigger body though.
