llperezthis past summer i mentioned on a thread that i think jrue will have the better career and i would take him over brandon and people pointed fingers and laughed at me and gave me the dreaded "smh". But i want to revisit the comparison now and see what you guys think.
Here are their stats so far this season:
Brandon Jennings:
15.3ppg…6.3apg…4.3rpg…0.7stls…2.2to’s…42%fg…38%3pt…34minutes
Jrue Holiday:
14.5ppg…6.8apg…3.1rpg…2.0stls…2.8to’s…46%fg…48%3pt…34minutes
The defense is holiday easily. I think he will become a perrenial candidate for all defensive team status. In Jennings favor is that the bucks have been a more succesful team making the playoffs last year and are at 4-5 this year compared to the sixers 2-6 mark. But Holiday has really been getting it going recently after a slow start and is averaging 22 & 9 in his last 3 games. While he still has much room for improvement, he has not been the man to point fingers at for the sixers struggles.
So what are your thoughts? Who would you take if you had to pick one of these bright young pg’s to build your team for the future?

the microwaveParticipantI think Jrue will definitely be better, and I think hes DAMn close now.. IMO jrue is a top 5 defensive PG in the nba already.. the resistance training he did this summer on the track has done wonders for his already explosive first step (change of speed), and ability to dunk on someones head… He already has had some crazy dunks, and considering i watch every sixers game, he has improved 10 fold.. I love what the future holds for jrue, and i dont think hes far from being the sixers best player (if he is not already)…i posted a little article below.
After the Sixers’ season ended on April 14 – they finished 27-55, well out of the playoffs – Holiday took a month off. ("He does too much," Martin said. "We actually have to shut him down after the season, mandatory, tell him he can’t do anything for a month.") When his ban was lifted, Holiday had two goals for the off-season.
1. Become more explosive and develop a go-to move.
"You see guys like Rajon Rondo, John Wall, Derrick Rose; these guys are fast, quick, explosive, can get up off the floor," Holiday said. "Last year I wasn’t like that."
"He didn’t feel he had it as much last year, trying to get by people," Martin said.
2. Develop a winning mind-set.
"Mentally, last year was tough for me, my rookie year, playing off and on," said Holiday, whom the Sixers selected with the No. 17 pick of the 2009 NBA draft. "The year for me, collectively, wasn’t a good year. Mentally coming in with a winning mind-set, that I’m going to come here and try to take over and try to piece it together and make the playoffs."
Holiday averaged 8.0 points and 3.8 assists a game in easily becoming the highlight – "At least we get to watch Jrue develop" was an oft-heard sentiment – of a disastrous 2009-10 season.
"We listened to what Jrue wanted to do because he’s really in tune with himself," Martin explained.
The solution to developing Holiday’s explosiveness was training with former Olympic gold medal sprinter Maurice Greene, which is a little like needing driving lessons and calling Dale Earnhardt Jr.
You can’t do any better.
For months, Holiday worked with Greene at the track at Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, Calif.
"Basically he took me through a track workout, something that he went through," Holiday said. "And now I don’t like track, just because of what he put me through."
Quickly, Holiday developed a summer routine:
Get up in the morning to lift, and then get some shots up.
Meet Greene at the track, and then get some more shots up.
Later, depending on fatigue, heading to the gym at night and playing for two or three additional hours.

stanford hoopsWhen its that close i go to the teams records
im also not sold on the defense easily so far this year with wall going off on him as well as williams from the cavs playing very well, douglas for the knicks, westbrook going off, collins from indy doing pretty well. Hes foot speed seems to be slower this year then last because guards seems to be blowing past him easier then they did last year and i think that might have something to do with playing more in the beginning of the season instead of the end last year
both should be very very good players byt the time they are in there primes giving cali two good future point guards

the microwaveParticipantwall had 8 turnovers that gm, and most of them were do to pressure defense from Jrue, but he did shoot 9-16…..Russ had 7 turnovers, but he did score on jrue fairly easily..Collison is a combined 10-29 shooting in 2 gms vs Jrue…T douglas shot 5-13 on philly (mind u jrue had 29 that gm i believe offhand)… and in preseason tony Douglas shot 4-16 vs jrue… Just saying a lot of what u assessed seems off base other than Russ Westbrook / wall getting theres.. MO williams shot 6-15 from the floor as well…
so Collison, Tony Douglas, mo williams — jrue owned….. (shooting %’s does mattter right? because in my eyes a 40 % shooter is not a good one, its one who was shut down)..
Wall / Russ – got theres, but turned the ball over 8/7 times respectively.. (he could have done better vs them)..

stanford hoopsTo me he looked alot better on defense last year and if you watch thew games the guys would get the open shots fater driving pass him or putting a good move on him and then just miss it. walls turnovers werent from getting his pocket picked they were from him making a bad pass or going to fast. im not saying holidays defense is bad im saying he can play better defense and he hasnt been playing the type of defense he is capable of. he is capable of being wayyyyy better at defense then jennings but hes not so far. Am i lying or do you think hes playing the type of D that hes capable of and ccant play much better? im i just overrating his defense of potential here?

apb540ParticipantHis defense has been sparatic this year, but overall it has been very solid. He has real active hands, good length, and his strength will come over time. If he keeps this work ethic up over the next 2-3 years, this kid is going to be a monster cuz he still only 20 years old!

IndianaBasketballParticipantI’d go with Holiday as well. He’s not as flashy as Jennings, but he seems to be able to do everything just as good or even better while also having more size and length. I’ve been impressed with his athleticism. He has more than I thought.
He hasn’t been a spectactular defender this season, but he’s had his moments. He’s been good overall at that end. I really like his upside.

the microwaveParticipantyea i mean hes still a work in progress.. But i feel he has made tremendous leaps and bounds this yr.. U also have to keep in mind Philly no longer has their anchor under the rim….. I wanted dalmbert gone as much as the next guy, but i will say i do miss his interior D….

JNixonParticipantI’d take Brandon Jennings. I think Jennings is a better pure PG, a better natural scorer, and a better shooter. Jennings needs to get more efficient and he’s not nearly as good a defender as Holiday, but I think Jennings is a better player than him. Jennings also has more upside to continue to be better.

the microwaveParticipantmay i ask why u think Jennings has more upside than Jrue? Considering he is nowhere near the athlete nor defender Jrue is.. He also does not posess the size that Jrue does. In addition Jennings is nearly a year older.. 9 months to be specific.. Jrue also can play on or off the ball, and defend 1’s and 2’s.. Jennings is also on a much better squad….
one could argue jennings is a better shooter, but #’s speak otherwise through the opening season stretch.

JNixonParticipantWell not that this means all that much but, to say Holiday is a better athlete than Brandon Jennings is simply not true. Holiday isn’t a better athlete than Jennings is. It’s actually not even all that close either. Jennings is better at every aspect of athleticism.
Also, Jennings showed the ability to play effectively off the ball last season. Jennings and Ridnour both played both guard spots on the floor together at times. Holiday isn’t great without the ball, even though he can play both guard spots.
How old they are means literally nothing considering they are basically the same age and have the same amount of NBA experience.
Holiday will always be a better defender, but does that alone warrant saying he has more upside? I don’t think so. There are plenty of PG’s better on D than Steve Nash. Same with Derrick Rose. Would you say they have more upside or will ever be better for that reason alone? Because I don’t.

OhCanada-ParticipantJennings is just too much of a liability on the perimeter for whatever reason. Long term I do believe that Jennings can be a real athlete in this league but he needs to get that jumper down. As for right now it is very evident to me Jennings is more talented and a much better floor general, he does alot of things people dont seem to recognize out there. If Holiday was on Milwaukee last year they wouldnt have made the playoffs.

Im Your FatherParticipantWhat is all this talk about Brandon Jennings’s jumper. He actually shoots very well from downtown. I haven’t gotten a ton of opportunities to watch him, but when I have, he has knocked down threes. From what I’ve seen he needs to work on finishing at the basket. He has even been doing that better this year and is shooting .422 from the field, which isn’t great, but it’s still much improved.

How is holiday a better athlete? Are you serious or joking? Jennings is quicker, faster, and is easily a higher leaper

Im Your FatherParticipantOk, so he had a bad 6 game stretch of shooting poorly from three. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad shooter, his regular season numbers are a march larger sample size and a better way to judge how good a three point shooter he is, especially because he has started off this year making threes at almost the exact same percentage.

the microwaveParticipanti guess we will have to wait till the first head to head matchup, and agree to disagree until then. .. Ill respect jennings and not list his shooting %’s vs Jrue last yr (quite horrible), because Jrue ate him alive head to head with his superb Defense..Then again it is known that Jennings struggles against Bigger guards."biggest knock on jennings is that he gets pushed around by bigger guards"… maybe that has a lot to do with why i think Jrue owns him everytime they play.. It seems like jrue is playing against his lil bro out there.
NOVEMBER 19th—- head to head.. we can re-assess this in 8 days.

delfamParticipantI definetily think Jennings has higher upside and more athleticism, but If I’m building a championship I’m taking Jrue. I much prefer a bigger guard who is great at defense, knock down the 3 consistently, and just play stable over Jennings who can be very erratic at times and struggles against bigger guards.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantHoliday is a better Championship Pg…The sky is the limit for him offensively and defensively…
Jennings is a lightning rod at Pg/Sg…I think he has that chip on his shoulders and that has carried him early on in his career…He’s a flashier Pg and that will make him a Star in the eyes of fans…I’m a Huge Jennings Fan myself…I love my Sixers and feel confident Holiday will have a career on par with Holiday stats wise, skill wise and ect…What will always set them apart are the intangables…Right Now BJ has that killer instint…If Holiday continues to gain his confidence and gets that killer instint it won’t be much of a debate with his combo of size, skills and defense…Jrue also looks like he’ll have a good outside shot…He hit’s three with ease at times…Jennings is always hit or miss, his form is a little off, that will improve though, Skills was a great shooter…
If you like Championship breed Pg’s, With 6’4 Size, Skills at both end of the court and the product of a tremendous college system then you’ll want Holiday
If you like Highlight Reel Pg’s that cross cats over every game and talk trash doing it while shooting the Team into or out of the playoff picture every year then you will want Jennings

boxn1ParticipantThey are close,BUT….Jennings has an advantage because he is capable of dropping a number on ur pg scoring wise. Haven’t seen Holiday show that ability. Besides Holiday plays for a bad team, who knows how good he is,or can be without guessing.

stanford hoopsExactly. You can drop numbers all u want but it’s pointless if it doesn’t translate to wins which Jennings stats does. No one can make the excuse that the bucks were much more talented then Philly. Yet Jennings lead them to the playoffs and then with out bogut stepped up to force the hawks to 7 games. Winning is the deal breaker

llperezno question holiday was behind jennings last year as rookies. But this comparison is more about the future and so bringing up jennings being a key contributor(not leader) to a playoff team only holds so much weight for me.

stanford hoopsHe was the leader of that team. Salmons was the scorer Jennings the leader. Coach and salmons admitted that in the playoffs so that’s not debateable
as far as future so far the bucks look better and will
make the playoffs while Philly doesn’t look like they will be making it so for Noe and future I say Jennings because of his play plus team

llperezi dont really think there was a leader on the bucks last year. Im guessing the coach said that tohelp jennings confidence. How many leaders are on the bench in 4th quarters down the stretch of the season like jennings often was when ridnour was finishing a lot of their games. Jennings will be the leader but he’s still learning the ropes right now. And i still think the the sixers make the playoffs. A .500 record in the east gets you in and i think philly turns it around. Both are on losing teams right now and are only 2 games apart in the first month of the season. Thats not enough for me to factor into my decision on whos better.
As for how they play, its real close right now, but i like holidays upside more. I think he will surpass jennings this season as a player, but we’ll just have to see.
