McDunkinhttp://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=5763363
Just five days after reconsidering his commitment to Texas and taking a brief spin around the landscape, five-star point guard Myck Kabongo decided his first decision was best and will sign with the Longhorns.
Kabongo, who’s No. 9 in the ESPNU 100 and the nation’s No. 2 point guard, said last weekend that he was going to look into Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Syracuse and Texas and he did talk with coaches and recruits from the various programs over the last few days. But those talks only made him realize he never should have decommitted from Texas.
"I took a quick step and I evaluated everything and quickly realized that Texas is best for me," Kabongo said in a text message to ESPN.com. "For all the reasons I’ve stated before in the past, there’s no way I can build a relationship with (another) coach in a year like I have with Coach (Rick) Barnes and the staff at Texas and I don’t want to waste the other coaches or individuals associated with the schools time knowing this."

Im Your FatherParticipantHere is how it seems to have gone down. Kabongo wanted to play with Rivers, but Duke did not have a spot for him if Cook commited. Cook seemed to be exploring other options and so Kabongo decommitted and almost certainly would have gone to Duke. Now, Cook to Duke is just about done, Duke couldn’t take him, so he recommitted to UT.
This is not to say that Duke thinks Cook is a better player, but they offered him first, and it wouldn’t be right to go back on that offer, plus Cook is going to be a very good player.
I’m not sure how I would feel about Kabongo if I were a Texas fan. It seems clear that he would rather play somewhere else.

Moon RiverParticipantI think this young man was holding out for more and Texas/Barnes had to up the ante to land him. That seems to be the way things work anymore. My case in point is Anthony Davis (and his father) from Chicago and his "recruitment" by Kentucky.

Im Your FatherParticipant@Stanfordhoops
I am a Duke fan and I know that story may sound ridiculous, but I actually do have some solid info on this. I don’t want to go into too much detail, but a couple of months a go Kabongo contacted Irving about Duke recruiting him. Duke said that they wouldn’t do so unless he decommitted.
Since that time, he was asked in an interview what schools he would hypothetically consider if he reopened his recruitment. That list was exactly the one that he did consider. In that interview, he also expressed his wish to play with Austin Rivers. Duke on the other hand did not think they would have room for him, because Cook would be coming.
Quinn Cooke on the other hand had always dreamed of playing for UNC, but it seemed clear that Williams wasn’t going to offer him, so he seemed to be strongly leaning towards Duke. In fact, after CTC, he seemed ready to commit to Duke. But he didn’t and their were rumors that Williams was considering offering him and he also started looking at UCLA. It looked like UNC was going to offer, and that he would likely be going there.
Just as it looked like Cook was heading elsewhere, Kabongo reopened his commitment, and insiders considered him a Duke lock. Then, now that Cook is almost assuredly headed to Duke, they no longer have room for Kabongo.

Im Your FatherParticipantOh, well I don’t personally know any Duke people, but I do subscribe to Blue Devil Nation, which is by far the best Duke premium site. As I said, I didn’t want to give too many details, because I respect the time and effort that the guy who runs it puts into gathering his information.
But no, I don’t really know anyone important, I just pay for information from people who do. Sites like that are also great because since they cost money, their message boards are normally free of the bandwagon Walmart fans, who I hate even more than UNC fans.

midwestbbscoutParticipantyeah because they can both play off the ball especially Joseph….
this is just stupid by Kabongo b/c it just makes it so obvious that Texas is clearly his second choice…..he coulda just stayed committed for a whole nother week god forbid and then decommed if Cook went somewhere else…..

Im Your FatherParticipantI completely agree Midwestbbscout, I wonder how Rick Barnes feels. I mean obviously he’s happy to have Kabongo, but now he knows almost for certain that he would rather play at Duke. He really should have just done what you said.
Even if he didn’t do that he could have handled it better. He could have at least waited a little while to make it seem like he was considering going elsewhere, but that he decided to stay at Texas. Now Barnes probably feels like he’s plan b.
Although granted, Kabongo is a great player and by all accounts a very nice kid, so maybe he will just play well at UT and all this will be forgotten.
