don cannonParticipantNow not to sound like a Michael Jordan basher cause ima huge Jordan fan(more so than a kobe fan) but i just recently ppl bring up the recent bad finals Kobe has had in the finals but disregard the bad series that Jordan had against the Sonics.
Dont get me wrong cause imo Jordan is the greatest player to ever touch a basketball, until i have a son and he starts to play lol but thats besides the point, but in the last 3 games that Payton was guarding Jordan :
– In Game 4, MJ was held to just 26
– In Game 5, MJ only had 23
– In Game 6(the clincher), MJ shot 5-19 for 22(lowest output ever)

midwestbbscoutParticipantI won’t hesitate to call Gary Payton the greatest defender to ever live…..I had the right to talk every ounce of sh*t that he did throughout his career….if he isn’t a first ballot hall of famer its a crime….

don cannonParticipantyea but dont forget that kobe had about 17 rebs and in his prime payton was the greatest defender hands down and jordan was the greatest offensive player so id figure that the offensive player would have an edge but it wasnt that way

mgreener_34ParticipantYeah man, I’ve never heard an announcer say that the better defensive team was outmatched by a better offensive team. A la Pistons and Spurs of this past decade. Jordan may have had a few bad games, but honestly you know your incredible when putting up 26 points in considered a "bad game"

stealsgaloreParticipantWho was guarding Kobe in the most recent finals. Ray Allen? Tony Allen? Decent but hardly elite defenders while Jordan was being guarded by the best perimeter defender of his time and maybe ever.

llperezkobe shot 41% and averaged 28 in these last finals. Jordan shot 41% and averaged 27 i believe in 96. But the way people talk about kobe would make you think he was a choke artist for doing the same basic thing jordan did in that series.

andxxxParticipantI think as time goes we tend to remember the great things about players instead of the bad I think that will happen with Kobe too, we’ll remember his clutchness and will forget about his sub standard performances.
That being said I still feel Jordan’s way better

Demarcus OnealParticipantNo Michael Jordan is God and everything he did was perfect him having a bad game is absolutely unthinkable, he was being modest when he said he could score 100 in today’s game he would probably get 100 on bad nights. Players in today’s game would of be destroyed by Michael in his prime, Kobe and Lebron would never be as good as there are now because theres handchecking and that changes everything. Michael had an awful team and led his team to every title they ever won by entirely himself

midwestbbscoutParticipantMichael Jordan once left a game saying he had a hamstring pull but really he heard my infant son was trapped on the 3rd story of a house fire…..he then returned after having his eybrows charred off to hit a game winning shot against the Timberwolves….

llperezjordan never missed shots, he simply allowed others to get rebounds becasue he is unselfish. In fact, he was so unslefish, he wanted the rest the nba in the 90’s to have a chance to feel what a championship was like so he went to play baseball. Jordan should be in the hall of fame of humanity.

doubledribblerParticipantDoes anyone consider who was guarding them? At least with Gary Payton you can say that was an all time defensive great. He used to put a ridiculous amount of pressure on the ball handler all by himself. Even a guy like Byron Russell was a really nice defender. You can say he got burned by MJ, but we all know that was a push off. Russell played D perfectly. As far as Kobe, he has seen a steady diet of James Posey, Ray Allen, Toney Allen, JJ Redick, Courtney Lee (rookie) and Mikeal Pietrus. You can say all you want about the Celtics team defense, but Jordan played some pretty stout defenses in his day. Pat Riley’s Knicks and Heat teams are what lead tothe hand checking rules finally being changed. Posey would have been to slow for Jordan and the Allens would have been oblitherated. Ray Allen would be the only guy that had a decent chance by wearing him out going around screens. As far as Orlando goes, Kobe should have averaged 40 that series.

llperezray allen, tony allen, james posey, tayshaun prince, bruce bowen, doug christie. are all great defenders that gaurded kobe in the playoffs. The cleitcs and pistons were better team defenders then anyone jordan went up against. Ill give payton the edge as the best individual defender either guy faced, but still payton was 6-4 and lets be honest, nobody shuts either of those guys down one on one. Team defense is just as important if not more important then just one on one defense and kobe has played better team defenses in the finals then jordan.

llperezyep, i defenitely think the celtics and pistons were better defensive teams then all those you mentioned. No question. And midwest, posey is the only half way decent defender kobe has faced? LOL. Aaron mckie, eric snow, tayshaun prince, mikael pietrus, tony allen? ANd thats just finals, cause i sure hope you werent referencing all the playoffs were you?

llperezbillyk, the 4004 pistons with a prime ben wallace and tayshuan prince on the perimiter was an amazing defensive team. These celtics teams are great defensive teams. These are maybe the two best defensive teams i have seen. The question that should be asked is are those teams you listed better defensive teams??? Really???

llpereznot really sure how to answer. Same as jordan did. Same as he fared against bruce bowen who i consider pretty much the same level of defender as gp.

llperezit should also be noted that payton didnt gaurd jordan in games 1 and 2 when jordan got 29 a game. Payton didnt gaurd jordan until half way through game 3 and from there on locked jordan up. Jordan shot 36% in games 4-6 with payton on him the whole time. George karl screwed up not putting payton on jordan for the whole series.

marcusfizer21ParticipantI think it was Schrempf who defended him in Games 1 and 2… I’m not saying Schrempf is a bad defender but Payton was just exceptional… By the time Karl decided to use GP, it was too late by then.

llperezit was probably hersey hawkins on jordan those first few games. I just rememeber that there was a lot of dicscussion about why gp wasnt on jordan from the get go back then and i went and looked it up and i saw it wasnt until half way through game 3 that they put gp on jordan. But it was probably hawkins on him with nate mcmillan, david wingate and vincent askew all coming off the bench if my memory is correct. ANd all those guys could defend pretty well.
