Your favorite player that never made it?

Maybe not my favorite, but I thought Kevin Pittsnoggle from West Vrginia was the truth a few years back, and I was suprised when he wasn’t drafted at all. He was a very exciting big man to watch in college due to his high skill level and shooting ability for a big man. It turns out he was completely out of shape after he graduated from West Virginia ans suffered as a result of it. Nowadays he is out of basketball entirely

Earl Manigault. if you have never heard of him many say tht he may have been better than Michael Jordan. There is a movie about him called "Rebound, the Legend of Earl Manigault" this dude was 6’0 and could grab a dollar off the top of the back board. Kareem Abdul-Jabar said he was the greatest player hes every played against. check him out

Jason Gardner – North Central High School and Arizona University

We went to the same middle school and high school. I played for the same middle school and high school coach. He was a big deal in Indianapolis, especially in the Washington Township area, and was who all we kids looked up to at the time. He was the first freshman from our middle school to make varsity at North Central. He was one hell of a running back too.

Artem Zabelin of CSKA Moscow was one of those intriguging European type finesse forwards who could play from SF to C and was talked about being drafted from 2006 onwards and each year I’d have him in my mocks as a 2nd round stasher and he was never drafted but I followed what progress he made with interest.

Florida State’s Tim Pickett.  An absolute defensive beast that could shoot from anywhere on the court.

In 09-10, he avg. 30 pts, 6.4 reb, 4 as, and 2.6 steals a game on 68% 3pt shooting.

Sure, it was in China, but thats still a rediculous statline.

 Ike Diagu, he was a beast in college and very fun to watch.  He was always a guy I thought would be a very good power forward in the mold of Elton Brand, but despite his high draft pick he never panned out.  I don’t know if it was injuries or mental, but he was always a favorite of mine.

 Artem Zebellin was a good one.

This is easy for me but I got 2.  Eddie Griffin and Dajuan Wagner.

I was starting High School when both of these guys were almost done and saw Griffin play plenty of times before he went to Seton Hall and was 20 n 10 guy with 2 blocks as a freshman. 

I thought Griffin should of been the first pick in that draft obviously in hindsight it would of been Pau but we never got a chance to see what Griffin was capable of because of his personal demons.  But that kid could do it all.  He had like a 7’5 wingspan and was a legitimate 6’10 and was a deadly 3 point shooter.  He was a great shot block and rebounder on defense and a deadly 3 point shooter on offense.  Plus he was athletic and a nice dunker.  The sky was the limit for him and its sad to say he hit his limit and is not in the sky.

Dajuan Wagner…that dude could ball…I remember when he scored 100 points in a high school game it was breaking news on Fox here in Philadelphia and all over the papers….Is The Camdem Messiah the Next Iverson?  FYI Camdem is a very small city in Jersey just across the Delaware and over the Ben Franklin bridge in Philly.  Camdem mostly resembles North Philly because the whole city is a gutted wasteland and there is really nothing to like about it except the riverfront.  Thats why Wagner was so important.   He went to Memphis and became the first Caliprari PG experiment and averaged over 20 points in his freshman year. 

Everybody was excited when he went to Cleveland with the 6th pick tho I felt he should of went as high as the third pick but no lower then 5 because the kid was a scoring machine.  His rookie year was nice averaging over 13 points a game and I remember his home coming game in Philly he lit it up, him and Iverson went back to back and the game went to overtime where of course AI closed it out.  But the potential was there.  He had the type of potential to average over 25 points a game in this league especially with the hand checking rule.  But then he got sick.  He had some sort of disease where he lost 50 pounds in the hospital was on life support at one time.  It ashame because he was a good kid and was actually nicknamed the Chosen1 here in Philly and Camdem.  The next year LeBron arrived.  I thought it was a match made in Heaven.  Lebron super versatile with all his passing ability and Wagner with his scoring instincts and outside shooting.  

I truly believe if Wagner next got sick LeBron would have a ring by now.  Wagner’s prime would of been Gilbert Arenas.  They have virtually the same physical profile and game style except Wagner was a better and flashier ball handler.  Wagner would of took the pressure off of Lebron to do all the scoring and would of let LeBron focus more on is playmaking abilities earlier in his career.

You can throw in a healthy D Miles in there because he was a good defender.

And don’t even think of saying that Lebron wouldn’t of meshed with a player like Wagner had he developed because Lebron just signed with Wade who is virtually the same kind of player.

Dude averaged 13.4 points 3 assists, and only 1.8 turnovers a game despite him being only 19 as a rookie in the league and having the ball in his hands most of the time he was on the court.  He had the work ethic and the talen level to become a star.  Some people just have that "it" and Wagner dripped of it.  While people may be mad over the Arenas comparison it is a good one.  Arenas is hands down the better shooter.  But Wagner was a better ball handler and the better slasher.  Wagner was fearless going to the rim and could finish in traffic with contact.  Wagner was an iso nightmare even in his rookie year.  His strength and first step were hard to stop.  And he was a very heady player as evidenced by him being a rookie combo guard who didn’t even averaged 2 turnovers as a 19 year old rookie.

Lavender was so good and so small lol.

Ronald Ramon was a good player at Pitt. He could shoot the deep ball and was super clutch. He also was an underrated shot creator for himself and others.

I’m from the same town and grew up a mile from Luke Jackson’s house. He came to some of my high school games. He’s one of the few in state players that went to the University of Oregon. I went to one of Oregon’s NIT games against Colorado I think. He scored like 30 in a row or something crazy like that and I thought he would be a stud.

I really wish he wouldn’t have hurt his back because I think it robbed him of some of his athleticism. I think he could’ve been an excellent backup to Lebron and maybe even a legitimate scoring threat next to him. Too bad

A lot of people were talking about him coming out after his freshman year for the draft where he might have gone 1st round. BUt he stuck around college for 4 years and just didnt show much improvement. He got tryouts with a bunch of teams in the elague, but never really catched on with anyone. Ronnie Fields, good call….luckily I got to see him live once before his car crash.  KG was a senior, Fields was a junior, and they lost in the quarterfinals downstate to Thornton.  Melvin Ely was a sophomore on that Thornton team.  Couldn’t believe that a high school team with both KG and Ronnie Fields wouldn’t win state, but that Thornton team was legit.

One ridiculous thing about that Thornton team was the D1 talent they had.  Tai Streets former NFL WR, Antwan Randle El NFL WR, Napolean Harris NFL LB, Melvin Ely NBA vet….their team was sick.  Randle El was certified at PG.

Pepe Sanchez! I loved him in college and thought he would be a solid pro. Though he wasn’t the best scorer, he was the definition of a point guard. He had good size, a flair for the dramatic and just knew how to put people in position to score. He led the Argentine team to a gold medal as the starting point guard. He wasn’t the most athletic but he just knew how to play the game. I think Juan Fernandez is going to end up being Pepe with a jump shot so I’m excited to see how he performs this year. Watch out for him, I see him being a first rounder in 2012.

On a more personal note, I really hope that Stephen Dennis makes it to the league. Played in high school with the kid and he’s really developed and I think he could eventually play in the league. 

Pepe Sanchez! I loved him in college and thought he would be a solid pro. Though he wasn’t the best scorer, he was the definition of a point guard. He had good size, a flair for the dramatic and just knew how to put people in position to score. He led the Argentine team to a gold medal as the starting point guard. Can people recall Sun Ming Ming a 7ft 9ins C from China who was in the mix for the 2005 draft until his workout with the Lakers highlighted his lack of conditioning and highlighted a tumour in his pituitity gland which had caused his giantism. He had this removed and went onto play in various minor leagues and even had a role in Rush Hour 3.

The thought that he could have been considered the next Yao Ming always amused me and if the Lakers had decided to take a punt on him in the 2005 draft maybe even with the 10th pick where they eventually took Andy Bynum then I wonder how soon Kobe would have been out of the Lakers or to have seen Kareem trying to teach Sun the fundamentals of the game.

John Riek of Mississippi State was also once talked about as being the next great defensive big man and on the back of the development of Hasheem Thabeet, he was probably seen as another African player who could come to the NCAA and learn the game but in effect he has been described as being like a big lump of clay. He had one of the longest ever wingspans recorded but apparently has very poor fundamental skills in the game and may well be much older than stated.
