sacphil_08ParticipantSo I saw someone post on a different thread that if a GM could choose between a top 10 PG and a top 10 Center that 9 out of 10 people would choose a PG…
Incorrect
Theres a saying in football and its that "defense wins championships" and you could say the same for basketball as well in alot of cases. (08 celtics, 04 pistons, spurs etc.) But in my opinion, i think Big Men win championships. The lakers the last two years have had pau gasol and andrew bynum, two guys that may not go out and score a million points but the mismatch, the threat and the skill (pau in particular) of their big men is what won them these past championships. The celtics with KG playing like "The Big Ticket" and kendrick perkins holding the paint down. All those spurs teams have had Tim duncan. The pistons in 04 had rasheed wallace who caused the mismatch issues with his shooting/ability to post up and of course the amazing defense they played. Big men NORMALLY are one of the main components of a championship team unless you are the chicago bulls with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen etc.
Now lets look at the PGs of those teams. These last two years and the three peat of the lakers in the early part of this decade all featured derek fisher; Steady, never forcing anything, automatic when left open, and a leader even amongst the egos of shaq and kobe. He RAN the team, rather than tried to dazzle you with his ballhandling ability or playmaking ability. He’s been respectable in both and he is and has been the heart and soul of those laker championship teams. All that said he was never the main contributor, he was always just rock solid in his performance. In 08 rajon rondo did the exact thing fisher did except that rondo cant shoot obviously like fisher. He is obviously much better now but then he didnt score a whole lot, he just distributed the ball, was a hog on defense and was the glue between KG, paul pierce and ray allen, but he wasnt the guy that was hitting last second shots or being the main contributor either. In the spurs runs at championships tony parker was the guy, and to me he’s more of a scoring guard. He plays PG because of his height but he has a scorers mentality. Not to mention when you have tim duncan playing the post, you are able to not be a classic point guard. Even with that being the case, he was probably at best the 2nd option of their big 3 of ginobli, duncan and parker. Ginobli was the guy making/taking the big shots. The list continues with jason williams in 06, chauncey billups in 04 (who wasnt nearly what he is now) even back to the days of the bulls with ron harper, bj armstrong etc. All guys that never played spectacularly when it came to stats. They just were the glue to a team and were solid contributors.
Even more proof of this is evidenced by the history of the NBA Draft. GMs that draft in the lottery draft guys that they hope can help them in the future to contend for championships and those are bigs. And just about every time, with the exception of john wall this year, and derrick rose in 08 the first overall pick list looks like this::
Blake griffin in 09, greg oden in 07, andrea bargnani in 06, andrew bogut in 05, dwight howard etc
The point im trying to make is that you dont need a spectacular PG to win you championships. Spectacular bigs however, with other pieces of course, are what win championships or at least what you build your team around if you hope to actually win a championship.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantIt’s more difficult to find spectacular bigs than it is finding spectacular point guards.

sacphil_08ParticipantWell yes of course it is but the point i was making was in response to someone saying theyd rather have a top 10 pg than a top 10 center which is why i brought this up in the first place

Mr. 19134ParticipantI said an elite scoring small forward like Carmelo Anthony would choose to play with an elite PG before an elite C because a PG makes the game easier for him. Thats what a good PG is suppose to do.
Example the players on that Suns roster thought that Amare was more disposable then Nash because Nash is an elite PG who makes the game easier for other players.

Mr. 19134ParticipantOkay r u just gonna hit the thumbs down or tell me how my reasoning is wrong.

jeff416ParticipantThere are alot of good pg’s in the NBA but there are very few good centers. I would rather have a dominate center like Howard than a pg like CP3 or Deron Williams.

Mr. 19134ParticipantWho would you rather play with if your were a great scoring forward like Melo or Durant…

sacphil_08ParticipantIm not talking about whether im carmelo im saying in general you want a big man. And if youre one of those guys and you dont want a dominant or great big man because he’ll take away your looks then youre playing for yourself rather than playing to win a championship which was supposed to be the ultimate goal of NBA players

SwatLakeCityParticipantI used to think that PG’s were more important. But, recently I have realized the luxury of having a Center like Bogut, Bynum, Noah, Howard, Ming, Either of the Gasol brothers, or Brook Lopez. Most teams try to get a bulk of their points from the paint because those are the easiest shots. Well, when you have a center that can block 1-2 shots or more (like the ones listed above) than that forces the other team to take more shots from the outside thus causing them to miss because they are harder. When you don’t, well you are probably going to get killed on the inside therefore loose the game.
A PG who can distribute the ball well and is the glue to your team, is helpful and definitely needed, but there are so many PG’s who can do that, and I don’t see a shortage anytime soon. Therefore, yes you are right Big Men are more important. Sometimes you have to be willing to sacrifice one of the other, but unfortunately you can’t sacrifice a quality bigman unlike you can a PG because their is such a shortage of bigmen than there are quality PG’s

IndianaBasketballParticipantName the last team built around a point guard that won a championship?
I’d choose a dominant big man over a ball dominant point guard every single day of the week.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantBut who’s next the great big coming out and how many point guards can we name that appear to be lottery picks this year and next…It’s a Guard’s world and we all want a great C or even PF but the truth is there aint a lot out there…

SubZeroParticipantRajon Rondo is a great PG, but besides him…
10- Derek Fisher
09- Derek Fisher
07- Tony Parker *Some people could argue this, but I don’t consider him a great PG. Good, above average, but not great
06- Gary Payton (past prime)/Jason Williams (past prime)
Who else did these teams have? ’06 Heat had Wade/Shaq, ’07 Spurs had Ginobili and Duncan, ’09 & ’10 Lakers had Kobe/Pau.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantyou can win with a corpse at PG if you have a elite scorer at Sg or Sf and an elite Big man at the Pf/C spot…but in a draft you go for the BPA and always take bigs at your own risk…They can always look like the smart move but then ypou have the Oden’s of the world who make you look stupid for drafting ahead of an elite scorer like Durant…Sure Oden looked like the smart pick but would they love to take that one back…The Blazers may have a Ring if they drafted Durant

goneParticipantBillups?
Zeke?

sheltwon3ParticipantIt depends on the player because Shaq is a dominate big and can pass which means he gets players open shots that way and good point guard create shots for his teammates. Most scorers would probably rather have a great point guard but shooters would rather have a good post man or some one who could get them wide open shots.

Mr. 19134ParticipantAnd going by this argument tell me why Demarcus Cousins wasn’t the first pick in the draft? Why was Wall just another PG picked before him when they both are going to obviously be one of the best at their positions with Demarcus having a better chance because of a lack of competition. And Why was Rose taken over Beasly who could of been a dominant Power Forward coming into the league.
