Im Your FatherParticipantI frequently see people on this site mention that Lebron and Durant are equals, and that Durant has the potential to be much better. I’ve even seen people say “Durant has a chance to enter GOAT discussions, after all, he averaged 30.1 ppg and 7.6rpg at just 21.”
Durant’s numbers at 21: 30.1ppg, 7.6rpg, 2.8apg, 1bpg, .476fg%, .365 3fg% (Durant lost in the 1st round, granted, to the eventual champions.)
Lebron’s numbers at 21: 31.4ppg 7rpg 6.6 apg, .8bpg, .480fg%, .335 3fg% (Lebron took a team of essentially scrubs to the finals.)
I too, think that Durant has out of this world potential, but I think people let there hatred of Lebron blind them to what a truly unique talent he is. Lebron was putting up better numbers at the same age. Liking Kevin Durant better does not mean that he will ever be better than Lebron James.

mgreener_34ParticipantBoth LeBron and Durant have done the same with their careers, so at this point it is irrelevant. Until one of those guys raises a banner no one will ever consider them the GOAT.

RUDEBOY_Participantlol..For the Last Time throw out all the stats..talking bout what each did at a certain age…
becuz it means nothing…Put Lebron on the T-Wolves ..
Put Durant on the Wizards
and see whose team has the better record..I say its be Lebron’s team..Durant is Great but he’s not as Dominant as Lebron..
As fans its interesting making comparisions pitting 1 player against another 1..
Durant is a top 5 player in this league..But Lebron is in the top 2.
Remember a few years ago folks were asking who was better Kobe or T-Mac?
Durant reminds me alot of McGrady …T-Mac was once mentioned as a top 5 player…0 - Posted on: Mon, 08/30/2010 - 9:15am #390251

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantThey aren’t going to be the GOAT, either of them.
But LeBron is better, now you can say Durant is a better scorer, but that’s really all he has. He also has a Tim Duncan attitude which is exactly what you want your star to have.
But LeBron is stronger, better post game, WAAAAAY better passer, better rebounder, better on ball defender, better post defender, better in the passing lanes, better with blocks, better timing.
I’m sorry, I LOVE KD, and I’m not a LeBron Lover.. but there are a lot of things that show LeBron is better.

mgreener_34ParticipantYou make some valid points, but you can go both ways with that. KD doesn’t make his team mates worse, plays in the flow of the offense, and is a more natural scorer. Also from the looks of it he has stepped up big time on defense. Both are great players, and when it’s all said in done I think they both will be in discussion for player of the decade.
The scary part is both players have ALOT of room for improvement! It should be fun to see them take their games to the next level

apb540ParticipantI would take Durant over LeBron because I am a strong believer in pure scorers winning championships, and that’s exactly what Durant is. He is wayy more competitive than Bron, is younger, and I believe that he most likely has a better work ethic (debatable but it’s my opinion). At the end of the day, give me KD over LeBron.

Cusemen727ParticipantI really hate LeBron, I mean i really do, and people may want to trash him now since I guess he took the cowards way out by joining with the heat, but he is still hands down the best player in the league, and to be honest, I dont think its that close, I shouldnt say that, him and Kobe are very close, I’d still take LeBron but thats IMO, but Kobe is on the decline while lebron is still very much in his prime, maybe hasnt reached it yet, so im not taking anything away from Durant, hes a great player and will be one of the best for the next 10 or so years, but to me LeBron is on another level. And will continue to be so, btw, I dont think its a matter of if but when, LeBron will average a triple double for the year, just throwing that out there.

cap777ParticipantI think LeBron and Durant are both very similar in the fact that they entered the NBA with an immense talent level. Although I actually believe that Durant is a little more polished in some areas of the game I have to say LeBron’s playmaking ability is what puts him in the front as the better player. I have never seen someone his size with the court vision and handling that LeBron possesses.

SubZeroParticipantI love Durant (T-1 favorite player) and pretty much hate Lebron, but I have to admit Lebron is better because of his vision, athleticism, ball handling, etc.
And cusemen, I disagree with you that Lebron is better than Kobe (better athlete, but not better pure ball player). Although if it were for the future of my franchise, I’d take Lebron, no doubt. I agree with you, he’s still great, but he is on the decline

StF616ParticipantThe Thing Is,
At 21
LeBron Pretty Much reached His Peak, That Was His Best Statistical Season
Hes Pretty Much Giving You 29 points 8 rebounds 8 assists a game
And Of Course at That Time, LeBron Had To Do Everything For The Cavs
Score,Pass,Rebound
With Durant
I Still Think Durant is Not in his potential yet, in a few seasons i think he could get maybe
35-7-5 with some blocks and steals a game
The thing is, Durant has great court vision, but he doesnt need to use it as much as LeBron
Because unlike LeBron, He has Russell Westbrook who initiates the offense and gets all the assists
and does all the playmaking.
Also durant is already a better scorer (even though lebron does have a better scoring average) Than LeBron,At The Same age, Maybe even as of now. The only reason for that slight advantage
LeBron has in the average is because LeBron was the only real scorer in that cleveland team
Unlike durant who has Westbrook,Green, Sometimes Harden etc.
There is no question that right now LeBron is the better player.
But this Next Decade, i expect durant to do more, especially with LeBron being 35 at the end of the decade. And Kevin Durant still only 31 which is still a basketball players prime.0 - Posted on: Mon, 08/30/2010 - 12:19pm #390540

joecheck88Participanti understand that lebron is alot stronger and everything but durant is taller. he is almost seven feet tall and that helps durant. now lebron is a much better passer but durant is very good at alot of things. ive been watching him play on team usa and kd is a very good passer. will he ever avg as many assists as lebron? no, but i dont see any reason he cant avg 4 or 5 a game when his team matures and he can pass it off and guys will knock down thw shots. as of right now lebron is better but lebron has that freakish strength and athleticism that not many have, which i think has made him able to get better numbers sooner in his career. while durant had to work on his game because he couldnt just bully people to the rim. thats what makes durant so exciting because we have seen his game grow so much in a few years while lebron is who he is. i dont know if im making much sense but what im teying to say is durant could be very close to as good as lebron and maybe even better. and that i could see durant getting 25ppg, 10rpg, and 5apg in one of his best years. and he can be a very good defender which i think he will because i think he has that kind of heart that kobe has(maybe not as much but more than lebron)

Pro-21ParticipantLEBRON IS WAYYYY better than durant and its not really all that close. Lebron could probably average 4 points a game if that was his mindset, and he still scores about as much and i think with a better field goal percentage , and hes a much better play maker and rebounder as well. He can do everything and anything any NBA player has ever been able to do….and tht “banner/championship” argument is stupid because NO ONE has ever won a championship without like another superstar or a bunc of nasty players. Durant is nice though…btw lebron is also better than d-wade and kobe….on like a bad game he had a triple double lol.

jaycee24Participantthe comparison at the same age debate really can’t be used because Lebron and Durants situation were different at those times. Lebron handled the ball nearly all the time compared to Durant who has Russel Westbrook a legitimate PG. The only real difference between those stats is the assists where lebron has like 5 more…and who’s to say if KD was put in Lebrons situation he wouldn’t do the same. I think Lebron seems more dominant now because of his ability to just overpower, blow-by, and jump over his opponents. KD has a Kobe like way of dominating in the way he makes shots you know only he can make. Now while right now Lebron is the more dominant player and is great as ever…he’s pretty much as good as he’s gonna get unless he magically becomes a consistent sharpshooter. Give KD sometime and he may figure it out to the point where he’s pretty much unstoppable. I guess we’ll see who’s the dominant one when we count up their rings in about 10 years

Im Your FatherParticipantI’m fairly certain Durant will never put up the assist numbers that Lebron does. He is an unselfish player no doubt, but he simply does not have the court vision that Lebron has. Lebron is an elite playmaker, KD will never be that.
Also, I think KD’s killer instinct is being overblown alot(not to say that he doesn’t have one.) It’s not exactly like Durant stepped up in the playoffs. He shot an incredibly poor percentage against the lakers. At the same time, people act like Lebron has none, when in fact, he has consistently stepped up his game in the playoffs and in the clutch, with the admittedly notable exception of game 5 of the Boston series.
Finally people speak as though Kevin Durant is destined to improve his game dramatically, while Lebron will remain stagnant. I have no doubt that Durant will continue to add dimentions to his game, but i’m fairly certain Lebron will too. After all, his 3-point jumpshot has improved dramatically over his career, to the point where he is a pretty good long-range shooter, as has his perimeter defense.
Let me restate this, I think Durant already is a fantastic player and is on his way to taking his game to an even higher level. But I think people are to eager to put him higher in the nba pecking order than he belongs, because they are so displeased with Lebron’s FA decision.

omphalosParticipantRight now, Kobe is the best player in the League when you need him. It will be interesting to see how Lebron’s game translates to a team with decent players around him and a coach who won’t just let him run wild. Comparing stats doesn’t work because of the freedom Lebron was granted during Mike Brown’s tenure.
In terms of potential, if Durant can bulk up a bit I think he will have a body advantage over Lebron; he might not be as athletic, but he has a huge wingspan and has a few inches height-wise too. Lebron has more brute force but keep in mind how scrawny he was when he first entered the League compared to now. As far as the post-game is concerned, Durant’s long arms give him an advantage again if he would only bulk up; this will be something he uses later on in his career.
Don’t get me wrong, I know Lebron is better right now, but Durant is going places and I think it won’t be too long before he surpasses Lebron.

joecheck88Participantthat is almost exactly what i was trying to say. i think durant is going to be very elite as a player. you can see it when you watch team usa play. lebron has gotten better and wont remain stagnant but he has never improved the way durant has. and durant is improving because he is working hard for it. lebron just seems like he doesnt need to work as hard because he is so physically dominant.

andxxxParticipantHow has Durant improved so much more drastically than Lebron? Lebron’s defense has gotten significantly better, his jumpshot has improved and he has performed in the clutch more than Durant. I know everyone loves KD because of his personality and everything but Lebron has not reached near his peak potential, he can still add a post game and his jump shot has improved every season
KD is a great player but because of his body type I don’t think he will ever be able to as easily dominate than Lebron not saying he won’t be able to dominate just not quite like that

justin22443ParticipantAs of right now, Lebron is the better player. Buuuut…Lebron’s game is about 99.9 % based off his athleticism. Durant has a way more polished game that doesn’t really rely too heavily on his athletic ability. If Lebron can do what MJ and Kobe have done before him and develop a deadly mid range game then he has a shot of ending up as a better player than Durant, but as of right now I just don’t see that happening. Lebron’s been in the league for 7 years now and he really hasn’t made significant improvements in his mid/post game. You would think someone with his size would go to the post more often, a la Carmelo, but it just hasn’t happened. So for now, Lebron is better but I do believe in time Durant will surpass him.

Michael.S.ParticipantThis isn’t even a legit question. Give me LeBron 5 years ago, now, or in 5 years from now.

Im Your FatherParticipantIs definitely not 99.9 percent based on athleticism. He is a pretty good 3-point shooter and he probably has the best handles of anyone his size or bigger in the league. He also seems to me, to show occasional promising glimpses of an in between game. Is Lebron excellent court vision and passing ability entirely a product of the fact that he can run fast and jump high?
Yes Durant is more skilled, but doesn’t that mean Lebron has more room for improvement and thus a higher potential, seeing as he is already currently the better player.
Also, Lebron is already the vastly superior defender, and has the potential to be an even better one. Lebron, when focused has the ability to lockdown top offensive players on the opposing team ie: paul pierce, and i think we will only see this part of his game improve now that he doesn’t have to carry so much of the offensive load by himself.
@Justin2243
You speak about Lebron as though he has an entirely one-dimensional game. Lebron is unquestionably the most unstoppable offensive force in the NBA. No one player can even come close to containing Lebron it’s not as though his lack of a post-game has been holding him back very much.0 - Posted on: Tue, 08/31/2010 - 10:54am #391083
