ag-pennypackerParticipantI read this article today about Derrick Rose working with Thibodeau, and Coach K. So a couple of questions, how much will Rose improve at defense next season? What will his numbers look like next season? How good could D. Rose become at defense in his career working with Thibodeau? Rose seems like he has all the attributes needed to excel at the defensive end, he his super athletic with good lateral speed, he has a long wing span and good size, he is also very quick. I can’t think of any reason he isn’t good at defense now except effort and knowledge. I’m guessing Thibodeau will be able to correct this. What do you guys think?

Demarcus OnealParticipantIf your athletic enough and quick enough and use your smarts, defense is based on effort. Therefore Derrick Rose can become as good at defense as he pleases. It`s all about making it an effort and with a defensive mastermind like Thibodeau he could become a defensive nightmare if he puts the right effort in. I also heard that he is working on his jumpshot the Eastern Conference point guards should be.very scared

JNixonParticipantHe has all the tools to be elite, and he already is a very good transition defender and can apply pressure on the ball when the situation calls for it.
Do I think he’ll be as great as he should be? No. I think he’ll be a decent defender (which he already is, if not average) on the ball, and a great off-ball defender ala Lebron James. Part of the reason I don’t think he’ll be a good as he can be is because I think he’ll save some energy for the offensive end. With the responsibility he’ll carry scoring and distributing, I think he’s going to lay off a bit on the defensive end.

nascarforthedeadParticipantSorry but there is more to defense that hard work and athleticism. Defensive awareness is a huge part of defense and Rose has very little of this. As much as he understands the game offensively he understands it that little on defense.

gregoden08ParticipantI agree with Iggy, he will probably be an above average on ball defender, but a great off ball defender. So many great offensive players these days save their energy for offense (Melo, Roy, Rose etc).

SteroidParticipantThe superstars in the 2008 Olympics became better defensive players in the season afterwards. Supposedly, that was mainly due to Kobe raising the bar on defense and bringing his competitive nature to the team. However, I think this can do nothing but help Rose and the other players too. I think it’s more mental than physical for most players. Most guys have the athletic ability to stay in front of guys, but it seems like that is the downfall for them too: Their athletic ability.. Some of the best defenders in recent memory aren’t super athletes like these guys..
