JPBrayParticipantOver the past three weeks, I have had conversations with some college buddies concerning the career path of JJ Redick. As Bulls fans we have argued what his importance on a team would be. I am curious what your thoughts were on this?
I am thinking he will be a career backup on good teams. A spot starter at best.
A friend thinks he is ready to start and by year 2 starting he will average around 18 ppg. He also says that he has the same game style of Reggie Miller and Rip Hamilton.
Curious what people think his skill level is. And maybe help settle this argument among friends.

SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantI think if given the opportunity to start he would be like Ray Allen(the Boston Ray Allen.. Not the prime Allen)…

GodfatherParticipantI mean, he can be streaky, and he clearly showed in college how talented he was, that just didn’t translate well into the NBA but this past season he gave us gilimpses of those Duke Days.
I don’t think he will ever average 18ppg, unless he gets a ton of shots, but he can average 10+. He can be a good shooter on a contender

jjmass22Participant18 points a game would only be possible playing for the suns or in that style, any where else he wouldn’t get the attempts, because he doesn’t create his own shot.

llperezsolid backup/spot starter.

TRC1991ParticipantHe’s the perfect 3-point specialist off the bench…guys like that are better suited for coming off the bench to provide a change of pace (kyle korver, jason kapono, etc.)…in the past we saw jeff hornacek and rex chapman but now-a-days guys are too big and athletic for guys like Redick to have to d-up consistently

Chicago1980ParticipantIthink he is what he is. He is a taller version of Steve Kerr a good role player that can knock down open shots he will never be a star because he cant get his shot off on his own but if you leave him open he will knock it down he will never average 18 points I say around 10-11 points for his career. If you look at it this was a career year for him he averaed 9 points a game this is the type of player he is.

bobbybParticipantHe is more than just a spot up shooter, he did a lot in the playoffs and was very valueable to the magic. That is why orlando matched his salary offer.

sheltwon3ParticipantWhen Vince leaves , I can see Reddick getting more time and being like the Boston’s Ray Allen. He has improves his handles and defense enough to get starter minutes. Also SVG trusts him which can not be said about every Orlando player

Demarcus OnealParticipantDid you really compare JJ Reddick to one of the best shooters to ever play in the Nba even not in his prime Reddick is not even on the same level as Ray Allen

SpencerIsHawesome2Participantuhh.. yeah? Allen’s not that great anymore and JJ is one hell of a shooter.
JJ this year: 44% FG, 40.5%3Pt, 2 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 9.6 Points in 22 Min (1.43 points per shot)
Allen this year: 48% FG, 36%3Pt, 3 Rebounds, 2.6 Assists, 16.3 PPG in 35 Min (1.33 points per shot)I don’t think JJ will ever shoot 48% (he can probably top out at about 46), but the rest of the numbers are quite close. If JJ got solid starter minutes, he’d easily be comparable to Allen, who, lets be honest is clearly very streaky now as well and is not what he used to be–but still a serviceable starter.
I also think people underestimate JJ’s ability to defend. He’s no scrub.I don’t think he’s too far behind Allen in that category either.

PureshooterParticipantRedick has definitely improved his defensive game. He is clearly far stronger and better conditioned now than he was when he first came into the league. I think a good comparison would be a better shooting and better conditioned version of Damon Jones.

SwatLakeCityParticipantHe and Kyle Korver are in the same mold. But Reddick is better, because of his defense. I think Reddick will have the same kind of career as Korver; a fringe starter but a great backup. Brings tenacity, shooting, and defense to any team. Magic did a good job to retain him, there just aren’t too many players with the same type of swagger.

JoeWolf1I think Reddick has the possibility to be a starter on a team that needs a complimentary shooter. Right now I think he’s better suited for a bench role for Orlando, but as a starting sg I think he could average 14-15 ppg 4 rbs and 3 assists in the right scenario. I personally think that he could reach 18 ppg in Golden State, Pheonix, or New York, but as he sees more minutes, which I think he will, he’ll be around the 14-15 ppg in a more balanced system.

dipt1982ParticipantHe could definitely be the 2008-2010 kind of Ray Allen, creating his shot off the ball by running around screens for open shots. But at best, he will top out at 14-15 ppg, if that. He’ll be a solid role player, 6th or 7th man, spot starter for when injuries occur. Ray Allen has fallen off the map since his Seattle days, and it’s not a stretch to say Reddick can at least be close to putting up similar numbers. Allen will always be known as the better shooter, but the style of play and the stat sheet will be very close.

JNixonParticipantJ.J. Reddick is NOT Ray Allen….Not even Ray Allen for the Celtics. And he definitely isn’t Rip Hamilton or Reggie Miller.
He might be an 10-12 ppg scorer, but anything more and I’d be extremely shocked. He’s a backup SG, I’m not definitely not sold on him defending as hard as he did in the playoffs for an 82 game season, especially if he played starter minutes. That’s a concern, because he HAS to defend all-out all the time to be an effective defensive player.
Also, I don’t like people saying that a player can play for the Suns and have gaudy stats. The Magic, not the Suns, shoot and make the most 3’s in the NBA. Playing for the Suns wouldn’t make him better. I think the Magic is an ideal situation for him to have the most success.

SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantHe’s a 10 PPG scorer now in 22 minutes.. If he played full-time as a starter he would only average a point or 2 more? You got to be kidding….

JNixonParticipantYou must be a Duke fan…Every time something is said about Duke you always take offense to it.
I said Brian Zoubek was terrible, you argued it.
I said Greivis Vazquez is better than Jon Scheyer, you argued it.
Now this…..Yes, I don’t think J.J. Redick will get much better than he is right now. It’s not like he’s some high upside player right now..
0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/20/2010 - 6:45am #358153

SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantI know, it’s painfully obvious. JJ is actually my favorite player, so the homer in me is defending him at all costs lol.
(Although, I don’t necessarily think Vasquez is better than Scheyer–I just think neither will be good in the NBA)

dipt1982ParticipantIggy, what does Ray Allen do at this point in his career? All he does is dodge defenders and run around screens, if JJ did that same exact thing, he would put up the same numbers given the same minutes. And I hate Redick, but he shot a higher % in threes last season, and given the minutes, would have the same effect on a game as Ray Ray, are you a UConn fan or something???
