McDunkinThe New Orleans Hornets will not offer free agent shooting guard Luther Head a contract because he had some physical issues during his physical examination that was a concern of the Hornets’ medical staff. league sources said Wednesday.
Earlier this week Head and the Hornets had agreed to a two-year contract that was contingent on him passing his physical. Sources said the decision not to offer Head a contract did not have anything to do with general manager Jeff Bower and the Hornets mutually agreeing to part ways on Tuesday.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI heard about this and I do not get it. I hear Luther’s agent is pissed, and that he had a physical last year with Indiana and passed with flying colors. What is up with the Hornets organization? It seems like they went from one of the more promising teams in 2008 to a total rebuild in 2011, with a young team! How do they expect to win with this current roster? They needed to address a lack of depth inside, and when they finally did they trade a player who is 7’1 for one who is 6’10 on a good day. Tyson Chandler may be injury prone, but why do they trade for Emeka, who is just a smaller version of Tyson who may average more blocks and rebounds but nonetheless seems to have less of an impact on the game. David West was a legit All-Star in 2008, but by 2009, his impact seemed to diminish quite a bit. I thought Posey was a great pick-up, but he has yet to provide much and their wing just looks like it is super questionable. Starting Julian Wright? Does not look like it will work as far as winning goes. They found two great players in Collison and Thornton, but they do not seem like an elite backcourt, more like great complimentary guys. I totally understand Chris Paul wanting out and just feel like they should find some way to try and get maybe a young big and a wing, some picks and just totally go into the rebuilding process that they seem headed for even with Chris Paul as a part of their team. It will just be painful to watch them with their current roster, and what they are doing with Luther Head just seems super shady. I can understand if they wanted to fire Jeff Bower, but why do that to a player? That is just poor form.

MuggsyParticipant100% agree with mikeyv, I still to this day don’t understand the Chandler/Okafor trade, I also agree that Collison and Thornton though good aren’t difference makers. I was pretty high on D.West a few years ago now he’s an average player at best. I live in Oklahoma and when the Hornets came here they was extremely exciting to watch, I had huge expectations for them and now they’ve like fallen off out of nowhere. I still wish them luck.

GalamothParticipant2009: Collison and Thornton
2008: Traded to Cash
2007: Wright and Haluska
2006: Armstrong and SimmonsOne of the glaring holes is the less than stellar drafts since Chris Paul came aboard. You can’t miss for 3 straight years and still remain competitive unless the owner is willing to SPEND MONEY to piece a better team together. Given that the Hornets ownership hasn’t been willing to spend money since they got burned on the Peja contract, they needed to really to do well in the draft.
And yea… Chandler for Okafor.

PlatypusParticipantin 07 if they kept the pick it would have been used for a shooting guard because thats where there biggest hole was then and the players they could have picked there that were shooting guards were (27th overall)
Chris Douglas-Roberts (selected 40th)
Sonny Weems (selected 39th)
Kyle Weaver (selected 38th)
JR Giddens (selected 30th)0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/15/2010 - 7:16am #354737

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantAdrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports has a different take on his twitter page
“Just hung up the phone with agent Mark Bartelstein, who’s irate over Hornets empty suit Hugh Weber reneging on a contract for Luther Head.”
“After firing Jeff Bower as GM, Weber is trying the slimy trick of ‘failing’ a healthy player on a physical to back out of a deal Bower made.”
“Weber is one more clown act running a team who doesn’t know if the ball is stuffed or blown. With Shinn, he undermined Bower at every turn.”
” ‘This is just so unbelievably wrong,’ Bartelstein said. ‘This is just not the way I do business in the NBA.’ ”

Eric_GuilleminaultParticipantThe agent for Luther Head said Wednesday that his client is healthy and that the New Orleans Hornets have not offered a reasonable explanation for why they rescinded a two-year contract offer for the veteran guard.
Mark Bartelstein said the Hornets informed him not long after general manager Jeff Bower had stepped down on Tuesday that Head, who played for the Indiana Pacers last season, had failed a physical.
"That’s absurd," Bartelstein said by phone Wednesday night. "There’s nothing wrong with Luther Head. Nothing. They’re doing tremendous damage to a player by putting out there that there’s something physically wrong with him when there’s nothing wrong with him. … I spoke to the Pacers’ medical staff this morning. They said he passed his end-of-the-season physical with flying colours and there should be absolutely no issues."
The Hornets have not formally acknowledged that there was ever a deal with Head, but Bartelstein said on Saturday that Head had a two-year deal with New Orleans worth about US$2.5 million, with a player’s option for the second season.
"Jeff Bower got fired yesterday. This is a deal I made with Jeff Bower on Saturday. Then suddenly, hours after Jeff Bower was fired, I was told they were going to rescind the contract on Luther," Bartelstein said. "So I would ask anyone to connect the dots."

JNixonParticipantCould Head sue them? Or would that be too time-consuming/cost too much? That seems illegal to say someones got an injury (if they really don’t) that prevents them from getting an agreed upon amount of money.

PureshooterParticipantThis seems more like an issue where Stern or the players’ union should step in have a talk with the owner to see why exactly the contract was rescinded and should strongly encourage him to rethink his actions.
