White ChocolateParticipantRemember back in 2000-2001 when the Bulls got shut out in free agency and they signed Ron Mercer. Well this year the Nets are going to get shut out, I don’t think LeBron is going to New Jersey and they signed Travis Outlaw to a 5-year $35 million dollar contract. Is Travis Outlaw this years Ron Mercer?

John-Bryant-54If you didn’t now, Ron Mercer averaged nearly 20ppg that season with 4rpg and 3apg. I’d say that’s worth 5m.

ScareCrowsRevengeParticipantHow much does he really take up in the Cap…5 years / 35 million = 7 Million in Cap…They still have plenty of Cap room IMO…what over 16 million by my last count…Why do people Keep saying this a bad deal…The 35 Million $ highlight…He can be a good starter or great bench guy if James or T’Will Take the Sf reigns…I think they can still Sign Lee at the very Least until The Favors project pays off…A vet Pg with the MLE and their a playoff Team…Harris was injured and they where playing all the young guys( and Tanking for John Wall)…I still think they should have drafted Monroe but Hey…This Line Up aint a Bad One
D.Harris, T.Williams, Outlaw, D.Lee,B.Lopez,C.Lee, D.James,Favors, Zoubek, MLE Pg….still young but a piece or two away from a real shot at the Big Boys…

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantIt makes zero sense for New Jersey to spend that kind of money on Travis Outlaw. If Outlaw is getting $7 million per, then what will Josh Howard get? What will Richard Jefferson and Matt Barnes get? Didn’t Rasual Butler start over him? What is he going to get?

NashyMingParticipantOutlaw would probably start. He’s a solid player capable of starting at SF. 7mil a season is certainly crazy though. Russian Mark Cuban probably isn’t too patient. If he can get LBJ, then his team should start getting the pieces to help LBJ, but it is likely LBJ wouldn’t join the Nets, then I think the Nets should not waste their cap on solid role players.
I think the Nets would be better off helping the financially struggling team unloading contracts while accumulating young assets / picks. This would be a much better way of building a young successful team. It would be painful for another year or two, but it can pay off if they can land another 2 top 5 picks to build a young core.
Nets is looking to get a starting PF now. I think missing out on Boozer is actually a blessing in disguise because by the time the Nets are good enough to contend, Boozer would probably be like going downhill.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantPart of the problem with the cap going up is that most small market teams aren’t above the tax line. It isn’t like they can simply go to Utah and offer a 2nd round pick and tax savings for Kirilenko. If they go buy a player from another team, it is going to be a Luol Deng or Hedo Turkoglu level bad contract. Marcin Gortat and Brandon Bass are options. I think if LeBron leaves Cleveland that Jamison, Varejao, and Mo Williams will be available for next to nothing. I just don’t think that the secondary market of New Orleans, Indiana, and Philadelphia will open up for the teams who missed out on free agents.
