I just wanted to bring this topic up because I was just thinking about it, and it seems to pop up in the media a lot during the NCAA Tournament and NBA Playoffs. A star player racking up 2 quick fouls can be detrimental to a team especially in the college game. Fouls change the team’s lineup, gameplan, and how a player plays with fouls; moreover, fouls can dictate who wins the game. Every year, this happens somewhere in the NCAA Tournament and it happens in the NBA playoffs as well. I feel the foul out rules put a lot of pressure on referees to do the “right” thing whether it be making a controversial call or just simply not making a call at all when it is obviously a foul. If the foul system can be somehow tweaked, I feel that doing so will clean up the games. The Refs wouldn’t feel so much pressure on making a good or bad call and teams wouldn’t have to adjust their game plan so drastically when their star player gets into foul trouble. This could be done by adding an extra foul to the limit or take away the “foul out” rule in all. This isn’t my idea originally, but if a player makes a foul who is over the limit, the fouled player shoots two free throws and his team gets the ball. I like that idea a lot, but I’m sure there are some better ones out there..

Not change the rules, but lay off ticky tack fouls.

    Hand check anybody?

I heard the announcers mention this during a Summer League game the other day..After Evan Turner got in foul trouble in just the 1st half..a player getting a 5th foul with the game tied or closed..Can be exciting and lead the coach to make crucial decisions…I say leave it like it is…

Nope, thats part of the skill of being a good basketball player. Playing good defense without fouling, sure you’re gonna get some bad calls and that can mess things up, but to give players more fouls takes away from the skill of being a good defender.
