Raptors forward Chris Bosh doesn’t want to be thought of as an afterthought in the free agent sweepstakes this summer.

“I don’t want to be mentioned as an addition to a team,” Bosh said prior to the season. “I want to be mentioned as the guy that people want to center their team around.”

Bosh hasn’t changed that stance, saying recently that he’s decided to distance himself from fellow free-agents-to-be such as LeBron James.

He is often mentioned as the third-best option on the market behind James and Miami’s Dwyane Wade.

Toronto general manager Bryan Colangelo has admitted that he’s open to a sign-and-trade involving Bosh if a new contract can be worked out.

“I’m not an addition. I’m a centerpiece,” he said. “I have to have that confidence in myself, and I want people to know that, because I’m not somebody that helps out. I’m the guy you get like, ‘Yo, we’re going to win a championship, you’re gonna take us there.’

“I want to hold onto that because I think every kid when they dream about playing basketball, they don’t dream about being a role player. They dream about being the man. I have that position in Toronto and to give that up and go somewhere else to be an addition would kinda defeat the purpose of my dreams.”

Dude had 5+ yrs to prove he is the man, and he is ABSOLUTELY not. He had a pretty good supporting cast last yr. and he couldn’t even lead them to the damn playoffs. I think this means no Bosh-Wade or Bosh-LeBron combo this summer. This guy is selfish and in denial

lol well…if bosh wants to win rings..he HAS to pair up with lbj or wade…if he wants to play for stats…then yeahh he could sign with a team or stay in toronto ..but i think in the end obviously he’ll end up being paired with one of the two..most likely d-wade in miami…becuase cb4 cant win on his own unless he has a legit, and i mean legit 2nd option and a defensive center…so maybe like joe johnson and okafor on his team wud be okayy..lets see what happens tho

If hes comfortable with being the best player on a bad team, then I guess thats the role he wants to be in…but hes never gonna win like that

Even before last yr, guy had a really good pg in calderon, & bargnani was starting to find it.

I don’t know, I think Bosh is more like Gasol as in being a champion quality #2.

i read this a while ago when the trade rumors were heating up at the deadline.

this is why i keep telling DNYCE a bosh for bynum trade would never go down. i think bosh’s only choice is new jersey. new jersey doesn’t have any superstar players to overshadow bosh’s ego and i think his perimeter game would really compliment devin harris’ ability to drive and lopez’s post game.

I kinda get what Bosh is trying to say, I think. He wants to be the reason his team wins, or loses. Because if he pairs up with a lebron or wade, if they ever do win, it won’t be because of him, he would have just helped. It sounds selfish but I agree with him, I’d rather lead a team and be the star, and if they do win it will be because of him. It might be true that he isnt a first option player, but he wants to prove to everyone that he can be.

Wade and Kobe won with Shaq. Kobe couldn’t win again until Gasol arrived. Jordan had Pippen. Duncan had Parker and Ginobli. Pierce couldn’t win untill Garnett and Allen arrived. Garnett never got it done in Minny without that second star. Lebron has clued in to that aswell after giving it his all for 7 years in Clev. You need 2 top dogs on a playoff team with a very solid cast or you can’t win.

I think Bosh is just explaining himself poorly here… He mentions the “mind frame” he feels he needs to have to succeed and I agree with him on that, but if your options are the chance to play with LBJ and/or Wade or having to face them in the playoffs for the next 5-6 years… its a no brainer. You play with LBJ/Wade.

Finally people see this, These guys care more about ego than money! it goes #1 ego #2 money #3 championship. Guys want max contract just to say they got max, so they can say no one made more money.

Isn’t winning a title. It’s making a bunch of money, putting up stats, and being the man. Kind of sounds like Kobe Bryant, before Kobe finally matured and grew up. I wouldn’t want this guy on my team with that attitude. Seriously. On a championship level team, Bosh is not a No.1 guy. He’s maybe your second, or even in some cases, your third best player. He clearly overestimates his own worth. He’s a “star” but nowhere near a “superstar” but good luck convincing him of that.

Didn’t he say that in the preseason?

Also, I don’t blame him. He has to feel this way. He’s getting a max contract. Why not feel confident in ones self?

To me, This opens up Chris Bosh to New Jersey

Great post, very good post, Bosh is not a 1st option on a contender its as simple as that, he needs a guy like Wade/Lebron to push him over the top, like what was already stated he cannot even make the playoffs with a pretty good supporting cast. He wants to be the man on a team but hes just not, atleast on a championship team.

I don’t see this as a negative thing necessarily. He doesn’t want to be a role player…if he’s getting a max contract he shouldn’t be. He wants to be the face of a franchise and frankly he’s right when he says that’s what you dream about as a kid.

Hotsnot gives a bunch of examples; Jordan and Pippin being one, Duncan, Parker and Ginobli being another. But therin lies the rub; Bosh wants to be a Duncan/MJ not a Pippin/Parker/Ginobli. He’s not saying that he can’t play with all-star teammates or that he cares more about money than winning. He just doesn’t want to be a Lamar Odom who when he retires people will say he only won because he was lucky enough to play with Kobe and Pau.

Frankly I think Chi town would be the best place for him. Rose is an all-star but would be more likely to share the limelight with another superstar than LBJ. Noah would give him a defensive and rebounding beast in the post. Hinrich would be a perimeter defender and veteran presence, while Deng would make a terrific third option on that team.

I see nothing wrong with Chris Bosh saying this, and I agree with ItsDwightHoward. I’m sure all of the top free agents this year wants the #1 spot on their future team, if they’re leaving. When people say that CB needs LBJ or Wade to push him over the top, well it works the other way too. LBJ and Wade can’t win a championship by themselves as shown, so they need someone like Chris Bosh to “help push them over the top”.

      That works both ways…

Bosh to New Jersey makes a lot of sense. He’d be their #1 option from the day ink hits paper, and it would also allow the Nets to bring Favors (or Cousins) off of the bench.

Well, as you stated, he definitely has not been much of a #1 guy during his tenure in Toronto. I mean, if you look at the supporting cast he had, there are some really solid role players in there. Granted, guys like Calderon and Turkoglu had bad seasons but still, if you’re as good as you say you are, how could you not even lead your team to the playoffs, Mr. “I want to be mentioned as the guy that people want to center their team around”? Take a look at Dwyane Wade’s situation in Miami. His supporting cast hasn’t been very good for years now, yet Miami has been a perennial playoff team. If Bosh doesn’t accept a number 2 role, he is never going to win a championship.

I think Bosh would be a great addition to the Bulls. if they cant land LeBron, there probably isn’t another player who should be available that if im chigcago i want more than Bosh. And his whole “I want to be The Man” syndrome could work in Chicago’s favor. Even though Derrick Rose is clearly the team’s leader and best player, he hasn’t yet ascended to superduperstardom like, say, LeBron and D-Wade. Coming to Chicago would put Bosh in a great situation talent-wise but also probably give him in his own mind at least a 1a or 1b status. Also rose would make the game so much easier for him and vice versa
