Bison 49ParticipantSorry for the multiple posts, but just got back after 9 months off the site … it’s been a while.
People have talked about what they do with the draft and a few times have mentioned a trade or two, but overall how do you fix this team (if you say draft Hayward, I am going to scream!)?If you were a GM, what direction would you take (draft, free-agency, and trades)?
They are looking good in 2011, with a lot of big contracts coming off the books, but the free agent class appears weak. So I would
1) Draft a player with big upside (not worry about need, because those will all change in the next year) – e.g. Whiteshead, Davis, George, Henry, or even Patterson (not seen as a guy w/ a big upside, but he will supprise people, and would fit well with Hibbert and Hansborough).
2) Trade some of the players with big contracts, as they are coming off the books people will want the space next year.
3) Begin the free agency drive later on in the summer when the prices have dropped a bit. That is often how teams avoid over paying good role players. they are not signing a big name, but could get a solid contributor that could help
4) Focus on rebuilding, and not shoot for 9th/10th in the east. This has been said before, but if it is understood that they are not winning this year, they need to try to get a differencemaker next year in the draft, because they will have a hard time getting a top player in free agency.
Thoughts?

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantWho the hell is “Whiteshead”

Bison 49ParticipantMy bad. I meant Whiteside. Draftnet needs a player name spellcheck. Thanks for catching me before I did something flloish.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantThey need a bruising PF to protect Granger, and they’re lucky there are a lot. Hibbert has proven he’s a starting center but he’s soft; draft Patterson or Udoh to add some toughness to that front line, then wait until 2011 (or wrangle a trade
with Murphy’s contract, say) for a legit PG to lead that team.0 - Posted on: Sun, 06/13/2010 - 3:13pm #331732
Nugz10ParticipantI think udoh would compliment hibbert well on defense with his shot blocking and versatility by helping off the weak side and being able to guard some quicker centers, i really havent seen udoh too much offensively so I dont really know how he would contribute on that end. There may even be some pg’s availiable at the middle of the season/trade deadline that they could capitalize on if there isn’t one availiable in the draft that they feel is worth a pick.

mwardiaParticipanti actually dont disagree to much, the pacers have alot of flaws, and taking the best player, or a guy who contribute rite away will automatically make them better, but u kinda hafta not go so much on potential if the pacers want a guy like whiteside or george, etc. they need contributiors rite away (i.e. henry, patterson wont hurt, aldrich just to name a few

IndianaBasketballParticipantThere isn’t a quick fix solution for the Pacers.
The Pacers are in rebuilding mode and have their eyes set on next summer, when they’ll be significantly under the cap for the first time in over a decade.
They’re not going to land a game changing player with the 10th pick. Rumor is that Bird has been telling draft prospects that they’re probably going to trade out of the 10th pick. I think it’s smart. Get more value out of the pick, which is something Bird didn’t do last year.
I’m sure Bird will dangle some of the Pacers’ expiring contracts during the regular season to see if he can bring back some young talent and/or draft picks that’ll fit in with the rebuilding plans.
Other than that… The goal is to make something happen next summer.

festar35ParticipantI’m liking the fact that Anthony may not sign an extension and expire in 2011. I know that he and Granger play the same position but i’m sure there is a way for those two to play together.
