    First off, here are the last teams to get in the tournament based on seeding:

    UTEP
    Utah St
    MInnesota
    Florida
    Georgia Tech

    The top teams left out based on the NIT seedings are:

    Illinois
    Arizona St
    Virginia tech
    Mississippi St

    First off, do you think this is fair or would you have switched some teams? I’m curious, becuase I’m watching some of this bracketology on espn and these guys are killing the selection committe like usual. Bob Knicht is talking about how the comitte doesn’t know how to evaluate teams and goes too much by just looking at numbers. Digger is talking about the goal should be the best teams period and that they put too much criteria on wins and losses instead of just taking the best squads. The VIrginia tech coach came on and sounded pretty mad about how their is no consistency to what the comitte is looking for, he seemed pissed.

    I just hate how it doesn’t matter what happens, people are gonna be whining no matter what. Plain and simple, if you didn’t win your conference and you couldn’t get one of 34 at large bids, then you obviously didn’t do something right. Virginia tech for example had the 336th toughest out of conference schedule i believe. Illinois had a ton of great wins, but they lost 14 times.

    Anyways, just wanted to hear your thoughts on this stuff.

    As far as Illinois goes, I am a big fan and I thought they had enough with 2 wins over Wisconsin and the Clemson win. At the same time, 14 losses is a lot and they didn’t play all that great down the stretch.

    yeah, see the thing with a team like illinois is they proved they are a very good team that can be dangerous against anyone. I think they are a more dangerous team then some of the squads that got at large bids. But I disagree with the mentality that the selection comitte should just go simply by picking who they think are the best teams and overlooking who are maybe the most deserving teams.

    I don’t want to hear about the gripes of a 19-14 Illinois team. Don’t lose six of your last eight if you want to make the tournament. That Mississippi State team lost to Rider, Western Kentucky, and Auburn. Virginia Tech could not have scheduled themselves a softer non-conference schedule. Arizona State didn’t have any claim beyond thumping the name of the Pac 10 and what a second place finish there means.

    Have fun seeing three of those #1 seeds in the NIT get knocked out early. I think Illinois is likely to be the only one of that group to get to the NIT Final Four.

    I cannot figure out why Mississippi St wasn’t selected. They had a decent overall record. They beat Vanderbilt during the regular season and then beat them again in the semi finals of the SEC tournament. Although Vanderbilt easily made it into the tournament as a number 6 seed, State was ignored. Something is wrong with this picture.

    And anyone who watched the SEC championship game knows Mississippi St was the better team. Kentucky was sooooooooo lucky in the last 45 seconds and managed to score the winning basket on a fluke play with only 1/10 of a second remaining. If you’re good enough to virtually beat Kentucky in the SEC championship, you proved that you belong in the tournament.

    In general, I think the 64 team format is just right and if you aren’t good enough to make it that far, go to the NIT and be happy for the opportunity. Having said that, I still cannot believe the committee didn’t select Mississippi State.

    Mississippi State is going to win the NIT…No way they should’ve been left out after going to the SEC Championship and taking a top-seeded Kentucky squad to the wire like that. They we’re about 0.1 seconds away from the tourny….That must suck for them..

    What sucks more for Miss State is that Florida who they beat in the SEC tournament gets in, and they don’t. Though, if Florida somehow makes a deep run, then they justify there selection.

    In my mind, I just knew Florida was going to be in the NIT. I thought Ole Miss had a better chance of getting in over Florida. Still baffles me how they got in, especially over Mississippi State.
