I’m confident that if you watched the big men who are currently playing in Europe you would find a number of guys who are very physical and constantly mix it up in the paint. I’ve read about some of the bruisers who are playing in the Euro leagues, but for the most part, they will never come to America.

I think one of the primary reasons NBA big men from Europe have a soft reputation [stereotype] is a result of the type of players drafted. NBA GMs are looking for guys who are athletic, agile, and gifted on the offensive end of the court. The athletic and agile big men who are drafted usually aren’t anything like the physical bruisers currently playing the center position in Europe. They’re somewhat soft because of how their game is patterned, not because they come from Europe.

Marc Gasol, who is very different from his brother Pau, was rated low because of his lack of athleticism, so he wasn’t selected until number 48 in the draft. In sum, I think what you’re seeing in terms of soft Euro big men is based on the type of players who are taken in the first round.

Incidentally, there are very few big men in the league whom I would take over Pau Gasol. And keep in the mind that both Dirk and Barngnani aren’t centers, they’re scoring forwards whose strengths are based upon their ability to be more agile than the guys guarding them. Barngnani plays center in Toronto by default, but he isn’t and never will be a true center.

As for Dirk, he may not play any defense, but he’s a terrific rebounder in crucial games, mixing it up big time under the boards. He also absorbs a lot of punishment on offense, often winding up on the foul line. So except for a total lack of defense, he is in no way soft.

yeah i found him.. hes not playing bad overseas but hes not dominating liek a coupel of euro guys and clipper fans thught he would while being in better shape
