balltilifall5ParticipantEuro big men have a reputation for being soft, dont like to mix it up in the paint, shy away from contact, and fall in love with jump shooting. What European C or PFs break the stereotype? I would say Marc Gasol and Zaza Pachulia are probably the two most willing to mix it up big men from Europe, with a handful of guys like Dirk (no reason to change what he does, hes phenomenal), Barngnani, Radmonovic, Tskitshivili (sp?)(who cares?), Varejao…what euro-bigs (past or present) do you know that arent afraid to go down low and bang and bruise?

McWinningParticipantId say Marc Gasol, hes much more physical than his brother he uses more of a power playing style than a finesse one.

balltilifall5ParticipantYeah, Marc Gasol was the first guy that came to mind for me too…i included him in the initial post with pachulia as the two that i thinka re most willing to mix it up…any others? I like the Scola name-drop.

JNixonParticipantMarc Gasol.
Well since I see you named him in your topic post already lol…I’ll say Jonas Jerebko (if he counts to you as a big)

Anton123ParticipantWell I would say Fesenko really plays mostly only with his size .
BTW Varejao is kinda Brazilian, quite far from Europe0 - Posted on: Wed, 03/03/2010 - 5:57am #262495

rtbtParticipantLouis Scola played in Europe, but just like his Olympic teammate Ginóbili, he is from Argentina.

JNixonParticipantLOL at Quincey. Wasn’t he supposed to be in the NBA this year? And wasn’t he a 6th man because he was immovable off the low post?

rtbtParticipantI’m confident that if you watched the big men who are currently playing in Europe you would find a number of guys who are very physical and constantly mix it up in the paint. I’ve read about some of the bruisers who are playing in the Euro leagues, but for the most part, they will never come to America.
I think one of the primary reasons NBA big men from Europe have a soft reputation [stereotype] is a result of the type of players drafted. NBA GMs are looking for guys who are athletic, agile, and gifted on the offensive end of the court. The athletic and agile big men who are drafted usually aren’t anything like the physical bruisers currently playing the center position in Europe. They’re somewhat soft because of how their game is patterned, not because they come from Europe.
Marc Gasol, who is very different from his brother Pau, was rated low because of his lack of athleticism, so he wasn’t selected until number 48 in the draft. In sum, I think what you’re seeing in terms of soft Euro big men is based on the type of players who are taken in the first round.
Incidentally, there are very few big men in the league whom I would take over Pau Gasol. And keep in the mind that both Dirk and Barngnani aren’t centers, they’re scoring forwards whose strengths are based upon their ability to be more agile than the guys guarding them. Barngnani plays center in Toronto by default, but he isn’t and never will be a true center.
As for Dirk, he may not play any defense, but he’s a terrific rebounder in crucial games, mixing it up big time under the boards. He also absorbs a lot of punishment on offense, often winding up on the foul line. So except for a total lack of defense, he is in no way soft.
