Is the 2nd overall pick cursed??? Besides Kevin Durant it sure seems like it has been over the last ten years

    2009 Grizzlies- Hasheem Thabeet
2008 Heat- Michael Beasley (To be determined)
    2007 Thunder- Kevin Durant
2006 Bulls- LaMarcus Aldridge (Tyrus Thomas trade)
    2005 Hawks- Marvin Williams
    2004 Bobcats- Emeka Okafor
    2003 Pistons- Darko Milicic
    2002 Bulls- Jay Williams (Injury)
    2001 Clippers- Tyson Chandler
    2000 Grizzlies- Stromile Swift
    1999 Grizzlies- Steve Francis (Injuries)

Lol… Other than Darko Milicic, I think saying that the 2nd pick is cursed is a little extreme.

    Only one all-star in there…

(I can’t remember if Francis was ever an all-star but he doesn’t count anyway…)

FRANCIS WAS A ALL STAR a couple times
    BEASLEY IS DOING PRETTY WELL
    LAMARCUS LOOKS VERY GOOD
tyson chandler has been pretty good. same with okafur

not too bad. compare it to the other picks 3rd,4th,5th in that same time span.. i havent looked at it yet

About the Aldridge pick, he’s saying it was bad for the Bulls because they got Thomas out of it instead of Aldridge

emeka, aldridge and beasley are solid so i would take them off the list

Francis was a star in his day for a number of years, so take him off

    Durant is obviously off

chandler, swift, Jwilliams, thabeet, Mwilliams are all kinda busts. But it is still too early for thabeet and the swift and chandler drafts were junk all around. So im thinking this 2nd pick is a bust theory does not hold up. Unless Darko alone ruins it forever.

i cant say tyson is a bust because hes doing what the gms thought he would do. rebound and blk shots. he was never thought to become a real good scorer by most people. some thought he would be better then he has been but i wouldnt say hes even close to a bust

2001 was a solid draft produce the likes of…

    Pau Gasol
    Jay Richardson
    Joe Johnson
    Richard Jefferson
    Zach Randolph
    Gerald Wallace
    Tony Parker
    Gilbert Arenas
    Brendan Haywood

i disagree quincey. I got into a huge debate with Daneboy about this the other day. Chandler was expected to be a franchise type big man coming into the league. I checked old scouting reports of his when he entered the draft and it would surprise people today that chandler was considered a potential sf with 3 point shooting skills in highschool. He was compared to Garnett. I found numerous sites that made those claims. His rookie summer league, he was shooting 3’s and playing on the perimiter. It might have been unrealistic and probably a best case scenario with him, but he was clearly exected to do more then just play defense. I’m not a chandler fan by any means, but i watched and followed him a lot in highschool because he was a big name and put up 26 points, 15 rebounds and 8 blcoks a game while winning the state title his senior year.

daprob, true on the 2001 draft. I meant the top of the draft was junk and most those guys you mentioned were never considered top 5 picks. But the draft itself ended up pretty good.

That Stromile Swift pick shouldn’t even count that draft sucked across the board and don’t forget Tyson was traded for Elton Brand

I don’t think it’s labeled as cursed because the guys taken are always terrible but more because there is a lot better talent that emerges from later picks. Obviously if you have the 2nd pick you want the 2nd most talented player, but other than Durant there was better talent taken after all of those picks. People won’t admit it but I think Ryan Leaf does a little to add to the 2nd pick curse. I know it’s a different sport but when I think of worst 2nd picks in the history of all sports there is Darko and Leaf.

maybe it was just the scouting reports i read and the people i talked to because they never thought he would be come a good scorer. i do recall the kg comparisons though. i remember reading that somewhere

Yeah..To say that the number 2 picks are cursed is a little too extreme..Sometimes GM’s are afraid to take chances..Thats whut separate a Jerry West from other GM’s he wasnt afraid to gamble..He gambled on Magic,Kobe, traded the popular Battier for the Rudy Gay who is on the verge of becoming an allstar..Dwight Howard could’ve been a number 2 pick if Orlando wasn’t afraid to gamble on a high schooler with great upside rather then go for the 2 Time All-American in Okafor..Sometimes G.M’s just make the wrong choices..Atlanta needed a point guard..Deron Williams & Chris Paul were there..But the Hawks selected Williams…Detroit selected Darko when Carmelo was still there..The Grizzlies selected Thabeet when Evans and Jennings are now the better players…GM’s sometimes get it wrong

Well, you might have some argument if you don’t try to tie Sam Bowie into this all, because between Bowie and Swift there were plenty of quality players.

It’s a stretch to include Francis. What do you want from a player? No, he never reached his full potential, but he averaged 18.1 points per game in 576 games and made three all-star games, along with winning a slam dunk title. Most NBA players dream of a career that good.

I would also say something has to happen to Durant and Okafor. Okafor’s had a better career than he’s ever given credit for. He’s averaged 13.5 and 10.5 in 389 games.

    So basically, it’s a stretch.

And stop judging Thabeet. He’s too young to be judged. He was put in a bad situation when the Grizz brought in Randolph and sealed up all their frontcourt minutes.

Either way he’s been more productive than two other top-5 picks so far.

And you forgot Curry with Evans and Jennings being better. Heck, Dejuan Blair is doing better.

he said exactly what ive been saying about thabeet. hes playing behind zach and gasol( basically just gasol). you think blair gets the same minutes behind zach?

Kevin Durant – 29.9 ppg and battling for the scoring title
    LaMarcus Aldridge – 17.5 ppg 8.2 rpg
    Michael Beasley – 15.8 ppg 6.7 rpg
Marvin Williams – 10 ppg 5 rpg as a glue guy on a stacked Atlanta team, if he were in a different scenario his numbers would be higher
Emeka Okafor – having a down year but, 13.5 ppg 10.5 rpg 1.9 bpg on his career
Steve Francis – 18.1 ppg career scoring average 3 time all-star, co-rookie of the year

Doesn’t look too cursed to me. You could list the #3, #4, #5, #6, and so on picks of the last ten years and find a couple busts and a couple gems. It’s more of a list than anything you could draw a definate conclusion on.

Where is Francis now? He had five good seasons and i dont take that away from him, but what i was saying was injuries cut his career short. For Marvin Williams the Hawks passed on franchise makers like…

    2005 DRAFT

    Franchise:
    Deron Williams
    Chris Paul
    Andrew Bynum
    Danny Granger
    Monta Ellis

    Allstar:
    David Lee

    More Talent:
    Andray Blatche

    Good player:
    Louis Williams
