APNewsBreak: Jordan reaches deal to buy Bobcats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Michael Jordan has struck a deal to buy controlling interest of the Charlotte Bobcats, taking charge of the money-losing team in his home state.

Traci Blunt, a spokeswoman for owner Bob Johnson, told The Associated Press that Jordan was able to put together an ownership group late Friday to buy the team he has been a part-owner of since 2006. Jordan has been running the team’s basketball operations.

The purchase price was not immediately available.

Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos also bid on the Bobcats. The NBA’s owners still must approve the purchase.

The deal will end Johnson’s largely unsuccessful stint as the first black majority owner of a major professional sports team.

With Jordan owning the team, the Bobcats should keep going forward with what they already have.

It seems Larry Brown had really been the one running the team as he probably adviced every move that Jordan made. Larry Brown should stay with the Bobcats and continue build on this year “success” (being in playoff hunt is already a good success for the Bobcats at this stage).

    Congratz to the Bobcats fans.

Jordan is probably one of the worst GM based on his track record, but I actually think it’s Larry Brown that is running the team nnow. Obviously, Larry wasn’t too smart about drafting either, including:
    1) DJ Augustin over Lopez (apparently Larry Brown insisted Jordan to do it while Jordan actually wanted Brook Lopez)
    2) Taking Ajinca by trading a future pick (that doesn’t sound like a good move either since the Bobcats draft pick would likely be higher than 20th and Ajinca wasn’t exactly a starter material)

Larry Brown also got a bad reputation of not willing to play rookies. Casualty included Darko Milicic (most well known “bust” that really got his confidence killed) and DJ Augustin (likely to be screwed as long as he’s still with the Bobcats).

Regardless of draft results, Larry Brown can teach the game and get his players to work on defense and to play in a team concept on offense. The key is that he would need to get coachable players that are willing to learn and play with a team concept.

He can get coachable veterans to work, so maybe the Bobcats would be smart to trade away draft picks for “Brownable” veterans.
