GreenLanternParticipantI don’t mean to upset other fans of my favorite team the Thunder, but when I look at the landscape of the NBA currently, I can’t help but fear this: OKC is peaking WAY too early. Just two days ago, they were 5th place in the West. 5th place!!! Today they are in sixth place after two straight losses that could have gone the other way for them. Does anybody seriously believe they are the fifth or sixth best team in the West? Give me a break. They will/would get KILLED in the playoffs by the Lakers, Jazz, Mavs, Nuggs, Spurs, and/or the Suns. The reasons they are winning this much this early is due to fool’s gold: 1st, Kevin Durant will go down as one of the top 10 scorers of all time. You heard it here first. He’s as good as half the league’s top two stars on each team. 2nd, injuries to top teams and the underachieving Spurs. The Blazers are having one of most cursed seasons in NBA history and they STILL might make the playoffs. The Spurs’ chemistry issues are befuddling everyone and their point guard is playing hurt. Houston? Yao Ming. New Orleans? Chris Paul (who is option 1 and 2 on that team with his assists) Memphis has the most talent of any non top 5 team, but they wanna choke the season all of a sudden. I’m scared this premature success for my team will actually end up hurting them in the long run, since the plan for the future doesn’t now include signing or trading for an All-Star. I don’t want OKC to be “an exciting team” forever. I want them to be Champions. And anyone who pays attention to any basketball knows they are far away from that right now, and it’s not simply because of a lack of experience. They are an unfinished product that needs another stud player to grow with the current nucleus.

Anton123ParticipantFirst of all I am a big fan of OKC and they aren’t a playoff team yet at all, I agree 100% on this with you. However i think if they do grab a playoff spot this year (which I think they will) it will only do good for them because every team needs playoff expirience.
IMO they should continue building themselves the way they started, building around KD, Westbrook, Green and Harden, bringing in a good big man via draft/trade or sign and upgrading the bench. The team has enough talent to be elite, they just are still in a building mode.
Kristic, Collison, Ibaka and Green is are really weak big men. The bench of Harden, Collison and Ibaka is really weak too, if they go on progessing and upgrading their squad like they started in about 2 years they might be thinking about winning the championship.By the way whatever happened to Thomas? I thought he started pretty well early in the season

UKWildcat_11ParticipantBut their success in the last 2 months can only give them confidence that they can do it again.
Oh btw, I’m a huge fan too.

fliptonnParticipantbut guys we gotta remember. theyre a young team. the thunder aren’t supposed to win the championship this year. we have the best young core in the league and a GM whos committed to keeping them together. Durant, Westbrook, Green, Harden, Ibaka, Sefolosha, Maynor, and this years draft pick (probably a shot blocker) are all going to peak at the same time and i guarantee its not this year. this season will not lead to a championship but theyre tactical progression is astounding compared to the team they were 2 years ago.

llperezim not even sure what you guys are concerned about? OKC is a solid young team moving in the right direction. They will make the playoffs get beat by someone and chalk it up as a learning experience and try and get better and come back next year. That’s ideally how things work in this league and the thunder are on the right path. As far as things being a fluke, they are a solid team. Yes they are benefitting from some injuries on other teams and might not be in the playoffs if everyone was healthy, but that happens every year and the thunder are taking advantage of the situation. There really nothing to be upset about if you are a thunder fan.

Anton123ParticipantI think the thing he’s trying to say is that they might consider themselves better than they are and when the other W. Conference teams go back to 100% underachieving might come a a shock to them.
However I also think that the success of the Thunder this year is something I can be happy about as a fan0 - Posted on: Thu, 02/25/2010 - 4:21am #260174
armanso they should have another 20 wins season ?! I dont get you at all cause everybody knows that thunder isnt a title contender this year but playing in playoff gives you experience and esspecially for their young players that can be only better…. this is the stupidest post ever i think…… did bulls win title in jordans first 6 seasons …. no they didnt but they played in playoffs and they loose also… but we all know what did they won in 90s………This post has absolutely no sense

marcusfizer21ParticipantQuick! Delete this post… If Kevin Durant reads this he’ll dunk your head in the basket.
Seriously, I think the Thunder has been working hard and that’s what KD said before the season started… He was a little frustrated by the media for underestimating them.. He has always been vocal about the term “hard work”… and YES, you can see it pays off… Fluke? I don’t consider it as one… OKC fans should be happy and not doubt what they are going through…

GreenLanternParticipantYeah and I have heard a lot of support for KD being a 3rd place MVP vote if the Thunder get a top 6 seed, obviously because the team is slightly overacheiving. Also, Westbrook has been playing out of his mind the last two weeks.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThey have gotten better because Kevin Durant has grown from a very good player to an elite star. I just don’t think there is enough around him to really be all that dangerous. I would be really disappointed if they didn’t sell of parts and assets (two picks and cap room) to address the power forward and center spots. If they think they are going to go forward with Serge Ibaka, Jeff Green, Nick Collison, and Nenad Krstic up front, they aren’t going to compete for a title.
I think Thunder fans are going to get the Blazer playoff reality treatment in the first round this year where people are going to wonder where is the talent around Durant.

GreenLanternParticipantBothTeams that’s exactly the comparison (Portland) that I’ve been telling people my team should try to avoid. A team that peaked too early and now are stuck making meaningless moves (Miller, almost Turkoglu) that don’t really make them championship contenders. There’s hope for Portland’s situation, but they have to do some drastic changes in the next 3 years.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantNo, but OKC staying the course isn’t going to work. They don’t have a real front court, and will get punished physically in the playoffs. There is no good reason for the Thunder to have anything but the best offer for Al Jefferson this summer. With the assets they have, they should strongly consider trading up to get Aldrich or Monroe. They could probably pry the rights to Tiago Splitter away from San Antonio. I’m not certain that with Marc Gasol entering the final year of his deal that the Thunder couldn’t put together a package Memphis could not refuse. I don’t think they should go after someone in their late 20s or early 30s, but any one of those guys elevates there chances of one day winning a championship. If they can get two, then I think there is a good chance of them being a contender as early as next year. And they have the pieces. Two first round picks, over $10 million in cap room, Sefolosha, Green, Westbrook, Maynor, Harden, Ibaka, Mullens, Weaver, White, and two-to-be expiring deals in Collison and Krstic. Nobody is in better position to get better quickly because of all their assets, but they cannot sit on them like Chicago and Portland have done recently. Young, cheap players with promise don’t stay that way long.

quinceyhodgeshey are doing exactly what they should be doing. even without other teams injuries they would still be a playoff team. its not like they are fighting for a 8th spot. there are injuries every year and thats part of the game just like winning and losing so thats no excuse. they will get better and there young players will get older and better and im sure they will add some players. they wont be a contender next yearand prob not the year after next either unless they get a superstar because no average player nor a draft pick is gonna put them in the elite company

MuggsyParticipantI think they’re deffinitely overachieving, but I’m not too woried. Simply because they are only going to get even better, to be honest if they went 50% on the season I would have been very satisfied, so borderlining 60%? Just icing on the cake.
