Although he doesn’t have that jump off the screen ability to be worthy of a number one overall pick, i think that number 3 is absolutely attainable. Burks really has no holes in his game that can’t be fixed. He is 6’6 and supposed to add another inch or two (great size for an NBA 2) and is absolutely more than adequate at bringing the ball up the floor and running a team. He has incredibly tight handles, and good one on one moves with great ability to create his own shot. Although his 3-point shot is not where it needs to be, the form is there and the elevation on his J is great. I think one more year in the big 12 and his 3 point shot will no longer be considered his weakness. He is a very solid athlete with great explosiveness and is not afraid to try and go up on anyone–see “burks tries to dunk on aldrich, lol–overall i see absolutely no reason why Alec can’t go top 5 next year with great athleticism, handles, ability to create his own shot, good on ball D, he really knows how to use his length to get into the passing lanes, and is a good facilitator and rebounder from the 2 spot. Put on 15 more lbs of muscle, shoot 500 3-pointers a day over the summer, and you will be a lottery lock, Alec.

Agree or disagree? What SG(s) would you take over him in 2011? Who do you compare his game to most? I see a lot of Josh Howard in his game….

I think he’s like CJ Miles. He’s a good player to me, but I wouldn’t dare take him in the top 3 of a draft. That class would have to be extremely weak. He’s mediocre as a ball handler, he’s not very strong, and isn’t a great defender at all. His lack of strength would be a big block in his development in the NBA. This is the same type of love a former Colorado Buffalo was getting about 5 years back, any diehards remember Richard Roby? The SG for Colorado and half-brother of Kenyon Martin? Extremely similar players, especially at the same stage of development.

I think he’s a 3 year player if he’s smart. He’s not even nearly the best player on his team (Higgins), and that’s saying something because Colorado is a Big 12 doormat.

Good point, however, he’s a freshman….his frame will easily hold at least 20 more lbs with a college strength and conditioning program which will allow him to score at the rim even easier than he already does. He is silky smooth and has a great set of moves to get by the defender. Roby always relied heavily on his 3 point/jump shooting, which at this stage of Burk’s career is not at all the focal point of his game. The numbers are similar but i would argue that Roby was a much more jumpshot oriented player even as a Freshman (38% 3pt, second best of career) and i think that Burks will develop a very solid 3-point shot rounding out his game as a slasher that can shoot from outside with great athletic ability, the CJ Miles comparison is very good, i guess i may be a little bit of a homer considering burks is a KC product…816!!

Roby and Burks are not at all similar players.

Burks has the potential to be an excellent defensive player. His length and athleticism are significantly better than Roby’s.

He’s also got good form on his jumper, and I would be surprised if he did not become a reliable shooter.

He’s young, he seems to be a smart kid and he’s got no real issues. Roby didn’t have any of that going for him.

Also, without calling anyone out, NBADraft.net was never behind the Richard Roby lottery hype.

I don’t think Burks is ever going to contend for best shooting guard in the league. But he could be a very, very good player. He’s also not as ready as Xavier Henry, but I think he might just have more upside, and should certainly be a better defender when all is said and done.

Well said Adi. I didnt want to be that guy who completely disagrees with someones opinion but aside from stats, Roby and Burks games are very different.
