Player of the Week

Darius Acuff Jr., Arkansas

It comes as no surprise that Darius Acuff earns this honor after a nationally recognized performance at Alabama. The 6’3” freshman delivered a stat line that immediately caught the attention of NBA scouts, scoring a career-high 49 points, the highest single-game total by any player in college basketball this season. He added five rebounds, five assists, a block, and a steal while shooting 59.3 percent from the field and 6-of-10 from three. The outing highlighted a dominant four-game stretch in which he also recorded 28 points at LSU, 31 points and seven assists against Auburn, and 20 points with five assists in a win over Missouri. For a player who has produced standout performances all season, this run further reinforced his status as one of the nation’s most dynamic offensive talents.

Freshman of the Week

Meleek Thomas, Arkansas

While Darius Acuff Jr. has drawn much of the spotlight, fellow freshman Meleek Thomas has quietly played a major role in Arkansas’ recent success. He put together an efficient two-game stretch, highlighted by a 24-point performance in the double-overtime loss at Alabama, where he shot 8-of-13 from the field and knocked down 6-of-8 from three while adding six rebounds. He followed that with another strong outing in a win over Missouri, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from deep, along with eight rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. Thomas’ shot-making efficiency, toughness, and ability to impact the game on both ends continue to stand out, and if this level of production holds, he has a legitimate chance to push himself into the lottery conversation.

Who’s Hot

Missouri Tigers

Missouri was able to survive in what was almost a 21-point comeback from Vanderbilt. Senior Jayden Stone led the Tigers with 19 points and 7 rebounds. This wasn’t the first big win for the Tigers this season, as they have beaten teams such as No. 12 Florida, Kentucky, and Texas A&M in previous weeks. The Tigers will have a chance to prove themselves once again this upcoming week with matchups against No. 20 Arkansas and Tennessee. With an 18-8 record, the Tigers must finish the season strong if they want to have a guaranteed bid to the NCAA tournament.

Josh Hubbard, Mississippi State

With a month remaining in the regular season, Mississippi State’s odds of making the SEC tournament are very low. However, Josh Hubbard continues to give Bulldogs fans something to look forward to. In a 91-85 win over Auburn, Hubbard set multiple season-highs, with 46 points and 9 rebounds. After posting 78 points in his last two games, Hubbard leads all of SEC scorers with 22.4 points per game. Although he is a bit undersized at 6’0”, his ability to rip through top-ranked defenses is something that few can do consistently.

Who’s Not

Auburn Tigers

With such high hopes coming into the season, Auburn’s chances of making the NCAA tournament for a fifth year in a row are slim to none. After an impressive four-game stretch at the end of January, the Tigers have dropped five straight. With a 14-12 overall record and just five conference wins, the Auburn Tigers sit near the bottom of the SEC standings. Even with talent such as Keyshawn Hall and Tahaad Pettiford, the team can’t seem to find success against ranked opponents.

Rylan Griffen, Texas A&M

Texas A&M has struggled to pile on wins lately, as they have dropped four of their last five games. One player in particular who has contributed to the team’s struggles is senior Rylan Griffen. In his last two appearances, Griffen has posted just 11 points while shooting 3-13 from the field. Up to this point, Griffen had been a reliable scoring option, which is why his recent performances raise concerns.

Top 5 Teams in the SEC

1. Florida Gators

After last season’s national championship run, Florida has picked up right where it left off and continues to separate itself as the team to beat in the conference. During a six-game winning streak, the Gators have relied on elite defense and dominant rebounding to control games. Their frontcourt trio of Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu makes it extremely difficult for opponents to generate efficient offense and consistently win the battle on the glass.

2. Arkansas Razorbacks

Darius Acuff Jr. has been the engine behind Arkansas’ rise, averaging 22.3 points and 6.2 assists while carrying a heavy offensive load. The Razorbacks have proven they can compete with top competition, building a strong résumé that includes wins over No. 21 Louisville, No. 13 Texas Tech, and No. 19 Vanderbilt. With their shot creation and confidence growing, Arkansas has positioned itself as one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide

Despite some inconsistency, Alabama sits near the top of the SEC standings at 19-7 overall. Led by Labaron Philon Jr. and Aden Holloway, the Crimson Tide feature the nation’s highest-scoring offense at 92.7 points per game. The concern remains on the defensive end, however, where Alabama is allowing the most points per game in the conference, creating a high-variance profile.

4. Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt has been one of the SEC’s most balanced teams, built around the trio of Tyler Tanner, Duke Miles, and Tyler Nickel. Their chemistry and offensive efficiency have fueled a 21-5 record and one of the best seasons in program history. The next step for the Commodores will be proving they can consistently handle top-tier competition after losses to ranked opponents like Florida and Arkansas.

5. Kentucky Wildcats

Despite internal challenges throughout the season, Kentucky has emerged as one of the conference’s most resilient groups. The Wildcats’ toughness and ability to respond have given them an edge in key matchups. When Otega Oweh, Denzel Aberdeen, and Malachi Moreno are producing together, Kentucky has the balance and scoring punch to compete with any team in the SEC.
