OhCanada-ParticipantAs a Raptors fan this is terrifying.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantSo I guess new CEOs wants to show off their power by hiring their own man to run the team in the same way new owners do.

HitsterParticipantKeith Pelley has been at the Raptors for well over a year as CEO so its not like he made a decision quickly. I wonder if there were differences over a new contract for Ujiri or it was a mutual decision.
Ujiri will soon get another job if he wants it. Pat Riley is well into his 80’s so cannot go on forever at the Lakers and also Ujiri has close ties with the NBA itself and could be in line for any major vacancy there.

Hatu SetuParticipantDo you think picking CMB that high was to stick it to the owners before he left? Wasn’t there another NBA team that tried to get Ujiri a while back? ATL or NOP I think.

HitsterParticipantCMB is the type of player the Raptors like as Oh Canada has described in several posts. He was in top 10 on some respected mocks so its not like they took a swing on someone like Portland have done with Yang.
That is always one of the great mysteries who has the power to have the final say on the pick. Is it the highest ranking person in the draft room as decided by an approved NBA structure. For the Raptors I’d assume that would have been Masai as he was Team President and Alternate Governor.

OhCanada-ParticipantRogers now owns MLSE. Rogers is Canada’s large cable, internet services monopoly. They own all the sports media channels and now they own all the teams. Blue Jays, Raptors, Maple Leafs. They also own a stadium ‘Rogers Center’. Its actually kind of scary.
Ted Rogers and Masai Ujiri have never seen eye to eye. Theres always been clashing between the two. Now that Rogers has majority stake of MLSE (I think its been about a year now) this was inevitable. Its kind of hard to believe they would make this decision but clearly as BTPH they want someone thats going to do what they say and not someone thats the smartest guy in the room. Thats what Ujiri was. He was the best at this. His decisions are strictly to build a winning team and Rogers more than likely wants to be a middling playoff team top capitalize on their platforms by selling what they can off the team. Like the current Maple Leafs. They really wanna just make the playoffs and sell some hype.
Its a dark day for Raptors fans. Hopefully we dont lose Bobby Webster or Dan Tolzman.
