Once again, we’ve seen how in the NBA, stats and numbers take precedence over the game. The fact that the Lakers game was interrupted and the court immediately invaded to celebrate James’ record says it all. The Lakers were losing at that point (and went on to lose the game), even though each win matters for the team, but who cares? Champaign for Lebron, who lost the game, but broke the record.

Could you imagine a tennis game being interrupted and transformed into a circus, just because Djokovic or Nadal broke the record for most points won in career? Or a football/soccer pitch being invaded because Ronaldo or Messi broke the record for most goals in career? Of course not, because everyone cares about winning more than stats, or at least has the decency to pretend they do.

The NBA has become a parody, where all that matters is stats, showtime, and ad revenue. ‘Winning? I mean please, we’re breaking records here, or we’re trying to lose anyway, because we want lottery picks and don’t fear relegation. Competition is overrated, what we want is entertainment and $$$.’

Had a timeout been called when the shot went in, what if the Thunder had wanted to play on ?

What if it had happened with a few seconds left in the game and team mates or non NBA pwrsonnel had come on the court would they have been sanctioned for leaving the bench etc.

We knew the record was going to go and as someone who thought this record would last forever it is a truly great feat by LBJ and he is likely to reach 40k points if he stays sound over the next year or so. It always confuses me that so much is made out of regular season stats when the real ones that matter are the play off ones, why not just have them combined or is it just to make Melo Anthony feel happier?

When Kareem retired and more recently MJ the game stopped but they were subbed out to take the applause. Looking back when Kareem got the record there were similar celebrations so maybe we let this one go but I’d be interested if anyone can enlighten me if a timeout was called by the Lakers etc?

They said before game on TNT both teams and NBALeague office agreed to stop game and have recognition/passing of torch with Kareem in attendance unless it happened with less than 2 minutes in game and score was 6 or closer or if game was in OT. Then they would hold ceremony after game.

Thanks for confirming Armchair GM with so few seconds left in the quarter I thought that could have been played out then have celebrations. Kareem being there and having the passing of the torch was a nice touch. I wonder if the Laker HC would have played LBJ more minutes if he was within a few scores reach and game had been a blowout either way.

As I said before I never thought LBJ would break the record and Kareem’s would have stood as long as the other great records. But even with reduced seasons on occasion LBJ has just kept going and will really put the record out of site forever unless someone like Wemby did turnout to be as good as his upward potential and stayed incredibly sound. LBJ also didn’t have to do the one year removed from college like current guys.

The greatest ever is still MJ in my view but King James would be up there on my Mt Rushmore just behind him. King James top on points, top 10 on steals, and 3 point baskets, top 5 on assists and not far off top 30 on rebounds. I cannot see another playing being so prolific across so many different stat columns.

So is Kareem on your Mt Rushmore too? Who’s all on yours? It’s hard to come up with one.

I’d go for MJ, LBJ, Kareem and Bill Russell with Magic and Wilt just missing out.

I think my only difference would be Larry Bird for Bill Russell. Russell to me wasn’t the better than Wilt. He is the winning one of the two though, so I get it. In an All-Time draft though I’d go Wilt over Russell. If they traded paths of teams, Wilt would have more titles is my guess. I doubt Russell would solely carry a team like Wilt did. Bird to me is better than Durant. Peak Bird I actually think is better than peak LeBron. But then again we are on a stats debate section of the forum, so they’re all as good as guesses as any. Records or championships? That’s always an argument. But Russell always had fellow hall of famers to play with. I’d take a handful of bigs over Russell. Shaq, Hakeem, Duncan for sure and probably 10 other bigs you can make a case for against Russell not mentioned. Russell to me was the best player on those great Celtic teams, but not by much. They were stacked throughout his career. Great player, just not Mt Rushmore great unless you only go by championships.

Bill Russell lead his team to such huge success and could help to somewhat negate Wilt that I feel he belongs on my Mount Rushmore. If it was a straight greatest ever player list then Wilt and Bill are very close on mine but for a Mount Rushmore which potentially recognises impact, historical position, success I have to put Bill ahead of Wilt.

One guy on ESPN had Wilt outside of his top 10 last summer which I thought was ridiculous.
