Player of the Week
Kobe Brown – Guard, Missouri- Kobe has been scoring the ball very efficiently for over a month now. He has scored double digit points in 11 straight games. In his first matchup of the week, Brown scored 20 points on 6-9 shooting, while grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out three assists. He was also a pest defensively blocking a shot and recording three steals in a upset win over Iowa State. Kobe followed this up with 26 points on 10-11 shooting while hitting five of his six attempts from deep. He also grabbed eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a blowout win over LSU.
Freshman of the Week
Cason Wallace – Guard, Kentucky- While Kentucky has only played one game this week, Wallace was sensational. Scoring 14 points on 4-7 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists. The craziest part of his stat sheet stuffing performance was his five steals. Wallace is an absolute pest defensively who has no problem using his active hands to cause chaos.
Who’s Hot
Zakai Zeigler– Zakai has led the Vols in scoring in two of their three games this week. In a 31-point victory at home against Georgia, Zeigler scored 11 points in 23 minutes to go along with seven assists, and four steals. He was even better in his next matchup against #10 Texas. He recorded a huge double-double scoring 22 points to go with 10 assists. He was also very efficient shooting 7-10 from the field and 3-6 from deep. In his final matchup of the week, he struggled shooting from the field (31%), but still scored 15 points
Johni Broome – Forward, Auburn- Broome has been on a very impressive streak over the past two weeks. Dating back to last week, he has scored 15 or more points in all four games. He was sensational against Georgia, dropping 19 points while grabbing 18 rebounds. Broome has been almost unstoppable from inside, and has shown he can give anybody that matches up with him problems. Look for the him to keep imposing his will, as he is a curcial part of this Tigers’ team.
Who’s Not
LSU- The Tigers are playing absolutely awful basketball right now. They are currently on a nine-game losing streak. Unfortunately, the struggles look to have no end in sight, as they are just freefalling. After starting the season 12-1, things changed since the calendar hit 2023. They are 1-8 in conference play, and have not won since December 28th.
Terry Roberts – Guard, Georgia- Roberts has struggled to get his shot to fall over the past few games. Over his three games played this week, he scored 28 points on 11-32 shooting from the field. Roberts is a very streaky scorer who is not very efficient from the field. He averages over 15 points per game despite shooting under 40% from the field.
Ole Miss- The rebels have really struggled this season in the SEC. Currently, they are tied for the worst record at 1-8. Their only in conference win is over South Carolina, who they are tied with at the bottom of the standings.
Top 5 SEC Teams
1. Alabama- The Crimson Tide are a very deep and talented team. Led by freshman phenom Brandon Miller, the time are currently 19-3 overall and 9-0 in conference. With only two scorers averaging double digits, the rest of the team does a very good job stepping up when needed.
2. Tennessee- Tennessee is a very deep team that gets consistent production from almost everybody. They have three scorers averaging double digits and three more averaging 8 points or more. The Vols are a tough matchup every night, because everybody else has shown that they can pick up the slack, should one player have an off night. They are currently 7-2 in conference, and 18-4 overall. Expect them to be one of the final team standing in the conference.
3. Kentucky- The wildcats are led by Oscar Tshiebwe, who is a fantastic basketball player. One of the most efficient big men in the country, Oscar is also a dominant rebounder. His presence is great as he can single handedly take over a game on both ends. This is another deep team, as they have four players averaging double digits in points. Multiple guys can take over nightly for this team, as they are a tough matchup for most teams in the country. Cason Wallace is also an absolute nightmare for opposing teams, as his active hands consistently make plays for his team.
4. Auburn- Auburn did as good of a job as possible replacing Jabari Smith jr. Johni Broome has stepped up big time since transferring in. Wendell Green jr. is still an ultra-aggressive shooter who’s never afraid to take the big shot. Auburn is another team in the middle of the pack, that will play spoiler for some teams down the stretch.
5. Texas A&M- The Aggies have shocked a lot of people to begin the season 15-7. Even more impressive how well they have played in conference. Currently tied for second place at 7-2, they have held their own for sure. The Aggies are a team that plays good team basketball. Everybody on the team gets involved in the scoring efforts.
