valentinemany fans say this or that college player wont make it because of defense. but after doing alot of reserch i found out most nba players defense isnt that great. just about all of them give up a good amount of points and the stars get there average or more pretty much against every nba team. no player that ive found gives up career highs against whoever they check. nba players are just so good on offense that youre not gonna have many guys who are very good defenders. on top of that players tend to get better as defenders as time goes on. j.j reddick was considered a horrible defender but he got better on defense. nba teams dont expect rookies to come in and be able to stop a vet nba player. rookies are expected to get schooled many nights against vets

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantSam Young and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute have came in the league and right away been guarding the other team’s best scorer. Wes Matthews isn’t a stopper, but does play solid defense which is why he has not only made the Jazz as an undrafted rookie but keeps getting minutes. Playing defense does help individual players get on the floor and hang around the league. It also does hold some guys back. Beasley would see more time in 4th quarters in he was better defensively. Nobody is going to stop LeBron or Kobe. Nobody stopped Jordan. Nobody was going to stop Shaq in his prime, but there was a significant difference in how much they had to work to get their points. It is the best someone can hope for from an individuals defender on a star.
A good defensive team is different. Teams who are good defensively in the NBA are built from the inside out. Outlawing hand checking has made it too hard to build a defense around perimeter defenders and having success. Those teams with Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, and Harper shut teams down by playing as physical defensively as any team. The way those guys played would have them fouled out in 20 minutes in today’s NBA. There is now greater importance on the big men. Dwight Howard closing down the paint covers up for a lot of bad wing defenders. Ray Allen and Paul Pierce aren’t great defensively, but they get by because they have Perkins, Garnett, and Wallace behind them. The Hawks defense starts with Horford and Smith. You show me a team with Troy Murphy and Roy Hibbert, David Lee and Al Harrington, Al Jefferson and Kevin Love I’ll show you a team that is bad defensively even if they have Rondo, Battier, and Iguodala on the perimeter. Teams like the Bobcats and Rockets get great effort defensively, and it allows them to do really well against weaker teams. It is impressive to see that kind of teamwide effort on that end. That said, I’d take Dwight Howard and his supporting cast of mediocre defenders over either one of those squads every day.

quinceyhodgeswhich is why i saidmost. there are always exceptions to the rule. on that note matthews and luc still let the guys they check get there average so like i said before most players dont come in being real good defenders and talking about defense is overrrated. beasley would have seen more time in the fourth with a different coach. rose was just as bad on defense just like most rookies but the coach kept him in. some coachs let you learn by fire while others wont

the I in winParticipantpart of defence is effort, many players just go through the motions but few actually get down and lock up their guy. Their are plenty of slow guy that physically can’t play D. Also playing the passing lanes is nice but it inflates steal averages and makes Tmac lock like he is lock down and if you miss the steal the other team usually gets a layup.
