After barely playing to start the season, Griffin has suddenly emerged as a legit lottery and potential top 5 pick in this years draft. The son of Adrian Griffin, who had a long career as a defensive wing, Griffin has the same build and physical tools as his father, as he is roughly 6-7 with a thick build 7 foot wingspan. He has the size, strength and length to guard multiple positions at the next level. However, what separates him is the offensive ability he has flashed so far at duke, which was a full display during his 27 point performance during dukes dismantling of UNC on Saturday. Griffin is hitting 3s at a remarkably efficient rate so far. Despite not having elite quickness he has also flashed some off the dribble creativity as well and his athleticism and strength make him a very good finisher around the basket.
The sample size so far is relatively small and it remains to be seen if he can maintain the same shooting efficiency throughout the season (he doesn’t have a very quick release on his shot). There are also injury concerns as he barely played his last 2 seasons of high school. His mid-range game and ability to create off the dribble still need work. However, his potential as a versatile 3 and D wing at the very least is very intriguing and it will be interesting to see how high he climbs on draft boards as the season progresses.

almost a shoe in for a top 10, possible top 5. Agree with pretty much everything you said. I only caught the highlights of that game tbh, but he’s been quickly rising as he gets more opportunity to showcase his game. I think Duke could be slept on as a team with Griffin playing the way he is. His dribbling, creating space will come to him more as he plays more.

I think worst case scenario he ends up a Harrison Barnes type guy in the league but his upside seems to be much higher. I had him in my top 5 preseason then late lottery/mid 1st, now it looks like hes back in the top 10.

There is a chance, and just a chance, that Griffin is the rare guy in that Devin Booker spot where because he is on a loaded team that is offensively focused on his teammates that there is more to him than we can see this year. With Duke having Moore, Banchero, Keels, and Roach, it makes sense how it took some time for Griffin to find a role. It isn’t certain that he is “just a 3-and-D” guy, but there is no evidence of what he is like with more of the ball or with more plays geared towards him.

I think he goes late lottery right now. I see him as a Jimmy Butler type player.
