dmo21ParticipantNow that the draft is over and we can kind of see how each rookie currently fits with his current team, figured I’d make a too early ranking for ROY. I’m basing this off of how the rosters currently look. These rankings will definitely change as roster makeup severely affects how much rookies play and how much impact they can make. So here we go:
1. Cunningham: Detroit doesn’t have a lot going for them and Cade will be handed the keys from the get go. I think I said the same thing about Hayes last year and that didn’t work out too well..
2. Jalen Green: He’ll probably get the green light a lot too. I almost put him in the top spot, but I think Houston has a few guys that will take the ball and shots away from him (Porter, Wall, Gordon).Gets a little messy after the top 2 as I don’t think Mobley, Barnes and Suggs will get a ton of playing time or make a lot of impact as of now.
3. Sengun: Currently, Houston only has 2 rookies at the center position if you want to play Wood at the 4 spot. Being as they don’t have much for talented big men, I see that happening. And with Sengun being drafted ahead of Garuba, I’ll go with him.
4. Grimes: This one will definitely change. But currently he’d probably start for the Knicks. But this happened last year with Quickley who was a later pick who found minutes. Grimes could be even a better fit as a 3-D guy on the wing next to RJ.
5. Kai Jones: He’d be higher if Charlotte didn’t trade for Plumlee. I like his ability to rim run with Ball.2+ - Posted on: Sun, 08/01/2021 - 4:12am #1251361

OhCanada-ParticipantI’d say Scottie Barnes but I’m pretty sure you can’t win MVP and ROY in the same season…

dmo21ParticipantAs a fellow Raptors fan, I’m not huge on the Barnes pick. I feel like a lot of those 3/4 tweeners with an NBA body that can’t shoot rarely translate to the league or turn into anything more. Getting a lot of RHJ vibes from him. Good bench/role player, but not somebody I’d take that early in the draft.
And currently on the Raps team, he’d be playing behind Siakam and OG, so not a lot of minutes for him. If one of those Siakam trades come to fruition, then things would change.

OhCanada-ParticipantHe’s not a 3/4 tweener though. He played PG on offense and played everywhere on defense. He’s like Ben Simmons with a work ethic/good attitude. This isn’t some raw kid either, his defensive skill and iq is through the roof. He played for Montverde Academy and Florida State so he didn’t get to be focal point but he is extremely talented.
I’m so happy they didn’t pick Suggs. Problem with Suggs is he would come in thinking he’s the guy when in reality he probably wouldn’t even be the 4th option on our team because his offensive game just isn’t as developed as Trent, Siakam, Anunoby or Van Vleet. He has potential but he’s gonna be like Ja Morant shooting wise and isn’t as crafty a ballhandler.

HitsterParticipantI could see Green and Cunningham being obvious choices. Suggs could well get a chance to be Magic’s main play maker so could be a contender too. Barnes and Mobley will play good minutes but might not put up the stats the others would.
James Bouknight if he gets decent minutes would be a dark horse but Terry Rozier will start ahead of him. If Rozier was moved then Bouknight could certainly put up good numbers alongside LaMello Ball.Sengun I agree cou;ld be the wildcard as he could get good minutes and has played to a high level in Europe but I cannot see him outshining Green so All NBA Rookie First Team might be a better bet for him.

OhCanada-ParticipantROY will be between Cunningham and J. Green. Whoever stays healthy between the two.
