Okay I’m gonna use the Raptors hypothetically in this example since I wanna make a “your teams offseason” thread after. I also make sure my maths and words is on point so I don’t confuse anyone. ✅

So the cap is at what 113 mil.

Raptors start off free agency with $88 mil locked up.

thats about $25mil in cap space.

If they want to sign Lowry and match say a $20 mil contract for Gary Trent Jr. can they spend the $25mil on players first and then resign Lowry with Bird rights and match Trent Jr’s offers taking them deep into taxes and then still be able to use the mid level exceptions and G League contracts?

Also I’m pretty sure the Baynes contract is a team option but its listed wrong on sites so that makes it about $32 mil.

Raptors have no cap space if Lowry leaves and they drop his cap hold and get rid of all their Non-Guarenteed Contracts (Hood, Baynes, Boucher, Bembry, Watanabe, Watson, Gillespie) and don’t re-sign any of their own free agents they could get to 22mil under the cap, but they are most likely working as an over the cap team. They basically have
    -league minimums
-can re-sign their Bird Right guys without limitation or sign and trade them which then hard caps them at 143mil if not hard capped they can spend as much as they want if willing to pay the tax (Lowry, Trent)
-they have the non-tax payers MLE of 9.5mil if they decide to go over the 143 luxury tax apron then they would drop to the tax payer 5.9mil MLE
-Bi-Annual of 3.7mil only if they stay under 143 luxury tax apron
    – they have two 1.5mil trade exceptions where they could take on that salary without giving any salary out to add players.

Okay so they can use the $22 mil and then resign Lowry and Trent Jr. or use them in a sign and trade. Thats what I was wondering. Ujiri said he is only staying if they go over the hard tax line.

No they can only get to the 22mil if they waive their Bird Rights to those players, which means they wouldn’t be able to re-sign them. So basically if they want to hold onto Kyle Lowry’s Bird Rights to re-sign him or use him in a sign and trade they have no way to get under the cap because his cap hold is 40mil.

Only way Toronto can get any cap room to sign free agents other than MLE and league minimums is if they let Kyle Lowry walk for nothing so it is not worth it to them to act as an under the cap team.

Oh I see. That complicates things. Trent Jr’s cap hold is also 2.1 mil which isn’t listed and Baynes option is at 7.3 mil which isn’t listed as an option.

          So cap is at 112.4

Raptors salary is at 83.4 mil before Lowry’s cap hold, Baynes team option declined and Trent’s cap hold which they picked up. But technically until we renounce Lowry we are really at 123.4 mil with the cap hold.

So Lowry’s gets renounced and that makes 29 mil cap space. Or we keep him and/or use him in a sign and trade. And Gary Trent. Jr can also be used as a sign and trade peice.

          This is complicated.

Go to Spotrac if you have never been to that site it explains stuff great as does Hoop Rumors.
Raptors go into free agency 65.8mil over the cap with all their salaries, cap holds, etc. here is breakdown so you can see what they would have to do to lower that number to get into positive cap space:
Waiving Rodney Hood unguarenteed contract frees u p 10.9mil
Waiving Arron Baynes unguarenteed contract frees up 7.4mil
Waiving Chris Boucher unguarenteed contract frees up 7mil
Waiving Deandre Bembry unguarented contract frees up 2mil
Waiving Yuta Watanabe unguarented contract frees up 1.8mil
Waving Paul Watson unguarented contract frees up 1.7mil
Waiving Freddie Gillespie ungarented contract frees up 1.5mil

Renouncing their Bird Rights, which means they can’t re-sign these players or if these players leave in free agency they get back their cap hold. If they get below the cap by cutting more than that 65.8mil they can spend their cap space and re-sign any of these players that they retain their cap hold for as much as they want after signing free agents and go over the cap. Even if they stay over the cap they can re-sign these players for as much as they want since they have their Bird Rights.
    Kyle Lowry 39.3mil
    Lucas Nogueira 8.8mil
Scottie Barnes 7.3 mil cap hold which will obviously stay as salary
    Stanley Johnson 4.9mil
    Gary Trent 4.7mil
    Nando De Colo 1.9mil

Non-Bird Right Cap Holds. Can only re-sign these players for as much as they want if they get below the cap and fit them into their cap space. If they are over the cap they can only re-sign these guys at a salary at or below their cap hold so basically the league minimum since all their cap holds are at minimum.
    Khem Birch 1.7mil
    Jeremy Lin 1.7mil
    Jodie Meeks 1.7mil
    Jason Thompson 1.7mil
    Jalen Harris 1.5mil

So as you can see it is difficult for them to get to cap space because they have to shed 65.8mil of those unguarenteed/cap holds just to get to 0 plus shed more to get money to spend and that means those players couldn’t be brought back for more than the minimum. If they shed everything that puts them only at a max of 22mil cap space, but leaves them with only 4 players under contract.
