OhCanada-ParticipantHere I wanna discuss some of the Hornets options with the 11th pick such as BPA, trades, fit with LaMelo Ball and of course the one thing the Hornets have desperately needing to do years drafting a big.
DRAFTING at 11
-Assuming the Hornets stay put at 11 there is tons of talent for them to choose from but they are going to really need to get a running mate going for Melo. To me that guy is Kai Jones. Now I’ve been very hard on Kai Jones due to his lack of production and slight build but the more I look into it the more I like. Signing with KLUTCH really helps his case. From what I’ve seen from them they aren’t just hype. KLUTCH really gets their athletes to lock in and focus on their games and sort of creates a standard within their athletes and a bar which they all have to reach. He is from Bahama’s and that country has an extremely tight knit community of not just athlete like Mychal Thompson, Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield but also its politicians and community leaders are very supportive and encouraging their people to do something special for the nation. He also played for arguably the best defense in college basketball in Texas. I feel like he is a good bet to continue to improve because he has the right people behind him, and with that athleticism and skill he has tons of value as an upside pick.
Where does that leave Sengun or Garuba? Imo Sengun’s best case scenerio is similar to a Sabonis type skillset. He is always going to be undersized and lacking the defensive mobility despite the production. Sabonis with Indiana, he can put up a monster game but when he’s on the court at C your really just trading buckets. When Turner is hurt Indiana is one of the worst defensive teams in the league. I think you have a similar draw with Sengun.
As for Garuba he is just so similar to Bismack Biyombo. As a rookie is he even as effective as Bismack? That shot is developing though which shows some signs for optimism but make no mistake his shot is broken at the moment. If he shoots them he will probably shoot 30’ish percent on wide open jumpers with a slow release in his rookie year, I maybe wrong, perhaps he is working on it every day taking 1000 shots and completely changes his form by the time the season beginning but thats not the likely scenario. I do like Garuba and seen clips of him winning games woth his defensive playmaking but I don’t think they can risk using the pick to replace Biyombo with a younger version that high in the draft.
TRADES
One trade I’ve been thinking would be cool to see is a deal with the Hawks for Onyeka Okongwu. Melo and Onyeka played together at Chino Hills. Clint Capela is just 27 and the question is two seasons from now when Capelas contract expires will Okongwu be the better option between the two? Do you slowly give Okongwu Capela’s minutes? I think the Hawks need to improve the team after reaching the Eastern Semifinals. If the Hawks traded Okongwu for the #11 pick they could save money and also have an asset for trades and or a talented player in this draft where the 11th pick is probably just as valuable as the 6th pick from last year.
Theres also the option for Charlotte to trade down with the Thunder, Knicks, Rockets etc. and acquire multiple picks or assets. This is probably my favorite option. I think if they can trade down and draft Charles Bassey, Filip Petrusev or maybe even Sengun or Garuba if they are available it could be better than drafting Kai Jones at 11.

2quick4uParticipantGaruba similar to Biyombo¿? No way… Garuba is a modern C that can guard 5 positions and while being able to score in different ways.. his shot is far from being broken, in fact during the last part of the season it has looked pretty good..
Garuba is definitely their man, if not Warriors will probably take him.1+- Posted on: Sat, 07/17/2021 - 6:01am #1250581

OhCanada-ParticipantBiyombo can defend at a high level so thats not a knock on Garuba. If he can come in and defend as well as Biyambo as a rookie thats very good. Offensively I only know what I’ve read and seen in clips so maybe you know more than me I dont know. If thats true and his offensive game has developed then sure hes a great pick at 11. Hopefully he gets some minutes during the olympics. Spain will play Japan before the draft and they will actually be playing Argentina during the draft. They might be scouting him while the draft is live lol.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantKai Jones makes sense, but won’t be the answer to their immediate hole in the middle. They have cap room to address it, but that might also mean they have the flexibility to fall for the likes of Mitchell, Bouknight, or Wagner should they be around. I don’t think Sengun or Garuba make sense given how small Charlotte is elsewhere. I don’t think being undersized at multiple spots is easy to overcome.

canadabasketballisrisingParticipantKai Jones or Sengun. Preferably Sengun

kobyzParticipantGaruba is Horace Grant/Maxi Kleber type player, i think the choice would be between Garuba, Kai Jones or Keon Johnson

festar35ParticipantSengun makes a lot of sense to me, but I would honestly be dangling that pick either by itself or in a package for guys like James Wiseman or Myles Turner.

kerrstParticipantCharlotte has brought in a lot of guys slated to go in the 20s. I could see a trade down with the knicks where they Hornets can draft the best big man available and also pick up a wing.

BothTeamsPlayedHard-ParticipantThe report where a guy asked “five sources for a team in the first round most likely to move up, and they all said the Knicks” and that “multiple sources said there’s a player in the low teens that they have targeted, but no one’s sure who it is” would make the idea of Charlotte trading back a possibility. From 11 to 19 and 21, I also think they aren’t getting a lesser player. I would be thrilled to come away with some coupling of Murphy, Petrusev, Primo, Dosunmu, or Duarte.
It is hard to see who the Knicks would be targeting in the early 10s. Davion would be the most likely to be a Thibs guy, and maybe it is that simple but he could be gone. Giddey would be a little too much like RJ Barrett in strengths and weaknesses. Wagner would be a possibility, but again him playing off the ball adds another uncertain shooter to a less than impressive mix. Bouknight would have the burden of being the local kid, and I suspect he will be gone by then. He is yet another guy whose shot is far from certain. Keon Johnson can easily go down the Zhaire Smith or Isaac Okoro path offensively. Kispert doesn’t really offer value to move up when Murphy or Wieskamp might/likely will be around at 19 or 21. Jalen Johnson has foot concerns, and half court offense concerns on a team that plays slow.

armchairgmParticipantI think these are the guys that will be on Charlotte’s draft board in no order: Keon Johnson, Moses Moody, Alperen Sengun, Kai Jones, Jalen Johnson, Corey Kispert, James Bouknight.

WetalkinboutpracticeParticipantLove the idea of number 11 for Okongwu for the Charlotte then using cap space to sign a veteran to back him up. Montrez Harrell? But I doubt they get the Hawks to bite with out including more assets. Okongwu Was a real player for them in the postseason. And after getting a taste of real basketball this postseason I doubt Atlanta would want to take any steps back.
