It’s not like Marshall is a great team anyways, even with him they might be in the NIT tourney for 2 years.

I think by end of year he will be a top 5 pick, and won’t pass that up.

He still needs to get stronger

I think Camby is probably the closest comparison, though Whiteside shows better offensive potential.  His perimeter game is smoother than I expected, though he’ll have to work on consistency.  He definitely needs to get stronger and you could tell that he was winded at the end of that game.  I think he’s a top 3 pick this year.  He’s definitely the best big man prospect in college basketball.

I’ve never seen him play, but from what everybody has saying this kid has some real potential, Top 3, that’s pretty bold. I’m unfortunately a MN Wolves fan so the only thing I have to look forward to in the season is hopefully having a good draft, when I mean hopefully, I mean for once taking the best player available and having him want to be here. I think one of the many things they do need is an athletic C with elite rim protecting abilities, can’t wait to see him play, 7 blocks tonight against Memphis? I know they don’t have any big men, but they do have some quick and athletic guards, damn, that’s a lot of blocks.

I think he reminds me a lot of Tyson Chandler. I think Chandler would had a similar impact in the college game as Whiteside is having now.

I’ve only seen him twice, but from what i’ve seen he hasn’t shown many offensive moves yet, except finishing strong around the rim and some touch on a short jumper and is a great shot blocker and solid rebounder. He doesn’t have the post moves Camby did in college. Camby came in the league as a 15ppg scorer (being a 20ppg scorer on a final 4 team) but took a backseat and focused on defense as his career progressed. I think Whiteside will have a similar impact as a pro right away as Chandler did, giving 7 points 8 or 9 rbs and blocking a shot or 2 per game. IF he adds some dimensions to his game then I think you can break out the Camby, Dwight, or KG comparisons. Right now, in my opinion, he is just too raw.

Did a young Marcus Camby or even David Robinson ever get shut down by an 6’7″ 18-year old the way Whiteside got knocked around by Kendrick Washington? Washington kept him from getting position inside and off the offensive glass. Is going to hop off this Hassan Whiteside future HOFer and top five pick bandwagon yet? Are you going to wait for the Tulsa game where he can’t walk all over Jerome Jordan? Just curious.

The number 1 pick Patrick Ewing? The Rookie of the Year Patrick Ewing? The Dream Teamer Patrick Ewing? The Hall-of-Famer Patrick Ewing? No he can’t. Not a chance in this world.

Really? Ewing stepped onto a college court for the first and dominated to such a degree against the highest level of competition that he led his team to the national title game three times winning it once. He was such a lock to be an NBA star that there are still conspiracy theories about how he landed in New York. The guys stepped onto an NBA court for the first time and was good for 20-9 every single night, and was 21-10 for his career. He was a Dream Teamer. Hassan Whiteside is 220 lbs, playing for an average NIT-bound Conference USA team, and in his one game against NBA length and athleticism (UNC) was awful. It is every bit as absurd as saying Adam Morrison comparable to Larry Bird. Oops.

Yea but where talking about someone who’s raw. Hassan Whiteside coming out of High School was a project. Yea, maybe the Ewing comparison was a bit out there.

Whiteside has not played alot of huge big men but who does on a regular basics? There isin’t alot of great bigs in one conference. Yes, Whiteside plays in a conference where he’s probably the main big but I feel you cannot blame him for that. We can dissect any player in the nation and question his competition.

You can’t blame Whiteside for playing in a bad confernence, but you can question his impact if he were playing in the big east.

I can say that a big man with little to no experience against big men his size is going to struggle when he faces it on a nightly basis in the NBA, and I can absolutely say that it is crazy to compare that guy to Hall of Famers when he has never done anything against anyone of substance.

Also, it isn’t true of all college big men. The Big East, Big 12, and ACC have size. In most years, though not this one, the Pac 10 has quality size. From top to bottom, the starting centers in the Big East are going to collect pay checks as professional basketball players somewhere. Kansas and Texas have NBA centers. K-State, Baylor, and TAMU might not have NBA centers or big men, but they guys who will pros. Tiny Gallon is just a kid and not where he will be in a couple years when he will be a real pro prospect, but he still has legitimate size. When teams face Duke and UNC, they are facing NBA length and athleticism with NBA-styled offensive systems. GT has two pros in its front court. The Pac 10 is down this year, but in the previous few years they had been stocking the NBA with draft picks.

And mid-major big men have gotten the job done against the big schools before. Chris Kaman built a resume where he did well when he faced better comp, and closed it out with a big performance against Duke in the tournament. Jason Thompson did not fall into mediocrity when he faced better comp, and did manage to go for 24-7-4-3 against that Beasley led K-State team. Bogut. took his team to the Sweet Sixteen. Whiteside still has shots at legit bigs. Jerome Jordan comes Wednesday. UTEP has Moultrie, Williams, and Caracter. Maybe he faces one of those teams again in the CUSA tournament. They’ll get into a post-season tournament (most likely the NIT, but if not the CBI or the collegeinsider.com) and considering those are all made for tv events (especially the NIT with ESPN) I have to believe they will put Marshall into a bracket with teams who have big men. I think it should be a lock that they should face a big conference school. After this week, UConn could be in the NIT. Put him in there against Oriakhi, Edwards, Majok, and Robinson. Let him go out to LA and face Vucevic and Stepheson. I think it would kill for an NIT rating.

2) Right now, where should he go in the draft then? Lotto? Mid 1st? I believe he’s almost a lock to come out because he’s 20 years old already

Where he should go is back to Marshall and put on 20 lbs and gain experience against a tougher non-conference schedule. If the Thundering Herd cannot do that, then he should not go to the NBA but to Spain or Italy and work on the craft over there for a year.

If he does declare, I would not want to see him going to any team that does not have multiple first round picks and the ability to go with the no pressure, no rush, approach with him. If he goes to a team that treats him like the Clippers are DeAndre Jordan and OKC is Mullens then I think he’ll have a chance. If not, he is likely to get that bust stink hung on him really quickly. If you take him in the lottery, there will be expectations. If Minnesota takes him after grabbing Wall or Turner in the lottery, no pays attention to him. If New Jersey takes him with the pick they get from Dallas and stashes him behind a top four pick, Brook Lopez, and whoever they sign in free agency this summer nobody will know he exists for two years. In both cases, it would be a good thing.
