I understand the excitement by some on this site about DeMarcus Cousins. He has been a beast pretty much all season and the thing I absolutely love love love is the fact he has gotten better as the season has progressed (unlike fellow freshmen Henry and Favors, both of whom will bounce back I believe). But a top 5 pick prediction for him is ridiculous for this reason: upside. Scouts value upside more than anything else. It’s also why Wes Johnson at age 23 will be a top 5 or 6 pick instead of a top 3 selection like he may deserve. I don’t know why people so knowledgeable about basketball and the draft haven’t noticed this after 5 or more years of watching it. Cousins does NOT have the upside of Favors or Whiteside period. Those players MIGHT not end up being better players, but there is no way Cousins goes before them, even though most agree he has worked he his way into the lotto right now. It may be weird, but that’s just the way it works.
And for those who don’t know, upside is athletic ability, motor, and age in a nutshell.

but his post moves and shooting looks pretty pretty nice for that young huge center, but those things still can be way better in Cousins game, i think it’s also could be called – upside..

I can’t let you get away with this one, “Cousins does NOT have the upside of Favors or Whiteside period. ” He doesn’t have the upside of Hassan Whiteside? Cousins is a year younger, same height and length, undeniably better offensive skill set, better muscular build for the NBA, and more productive against better competition. I know that the guy is young and acts young act, but there is not a chance in this world that a team takes Hassan Whiteside over DeMarcus Cousins and doesn’t regret it.

Actually what you do on the court isn’t upside. Average NBA players work and get better on certain aspects of their games too, it has nothing to do with what scouts look for first in a prospect. Upside is what I said it was: Age, Athletic Ability, and Motor. Cousins does things in HS and college effortlessly because of his body combined with a high skill level. But his motor and focus has been questioned and Calipari still plays him no more than 25 min a game. And as far as athletic ability, Cousins isn’t bad, just not on an elite level like Favors for instance.

No, I took issue to your comment about his upside relative to Hassan Whiteside, which is incredibly absurd.

BTPH actually I was talking to lalaila, I think my post came a few seconds after yours. As far as your Whiteside objection, we’re only talking about a 1 year age difference bro. And I can’t convince everybody that playing at a small school doesn’t doom you as a prospect just by stating it, so I’ll have to wait I guess.

I think that some people get caught up with athleticism, and think that just because your super athletic you have more upside than another player. It takes skill to be a good player, and the more you build on skills, the better player you’ll be. It doesn’t hurt to be athletic, and it can be a limiting factor if your not very athletic (Cousins is only mediocre athletically, but nothing too bad) but athleticism means nothing if your aren’t skilled enough.

Thank you Iggy. I never said Cousins won’t be better than anybody I said he won’t be picked before such and such because of perceived upside and I have heard no executive or draft guru say otherwise.

Cousins would destroy Whiteside and Favors, if they matched up this year.

And just because a player is super athletic doesn’t necessarily mean he can be picked over a player who is actually beasting and younger.

Numbers don’t lie and Cousins is dominating with ease, all they hype on Favors hasn’t been lived up to, after a while people want to see you perform like you are a top 3 pick and Favors hasn’t done it, you can have all the tools but if you don’t perform what good is it?

i agree with how you described up side but looking at favors yes he’ syounger but hes not a great athlete. hes a good one but far from great. his long arms make it seem like he jumps alot higher then he does. hes not very quick either and his motor isnt real high. so his up side is more from his age. and the thing about it is you never know if hes gonna reach whatever someone thinks. just like you have to temper youre expectations with cousins you have to do the same with a guy who is said to have upside. skill wise favors has a wayys to go.right now he just has the physical tools. dont be suprised if he turns out to be like marvin williams.(which isnt a bad thing) not a sf but talked about with alot of upside and young but never get to that upside.

this is a SUPER weak draft

he could be a top 5 pick,
but will either ever be a top 5 player in the league?

    you never know

give me Aminu, Turner, Johnson, Davis, or yes Wall

I have watched cousins play and to be honest with you, as good as he is, his lack of athleticism will hurt him in the NBA. He is still a top 10 pick but not really top 5. He would have to restructure his body and become a lil bit more athletic to be a top post player in the league because i can see him getting his shot blocked a lot and everyone in the league for the most part in the post is strong. He could become a Al Jefferson or Boozer type but they may be asking too much. I think if he does well in draft tests and can improve his maturity maybe he will be top 5 but that is a big maybe.

I dont see Cousin in the ten but after i can see him getting picked up but that depend on what team that is there. Look at Sean May and they look alike to be honest. i dont see cousin bully nobody in the NBA, because from what i see. He is going to be a avg pf.

avg PF?? 6’11 270 muscled guy avg PF?

for Sheltwon: he is not good athlete but still don’t understand why you are talking about him like he is terrible athlete, if B.Lopez or M.Gasol can get better and better so can Cousins i think..he still has size and is very very long, plus his dunk at McDOnald’s practise or fast break don’t something like week ago looks good enough..plus when he handles the ball he really looks faster then avg 260-270 pounder

Cousins is not 6’11”, eveyone knows that they lie on their height and weight statistics don’t believe everything you read. Do you believe kalin lucas is 6’1″ 190???? I think the points made that cousins is not athletic enough to be a high draft pick is valid, have you seen cousins make one play off the dribble this year?? an explosive dunk that left you speechless??? didnt think so. Brook lopez and Gasol a much more heady players then cousins you have to remember that as well. And to go off your “fast” 260 pounder logic they have hardly played anyone in the rpi top 100 i can make some plays against the guys at my gym too.

cousins hasnt been able 2 showcase his jumpshot which streches to 20 feet or his handle which is much better than u would expect from a guy of his size. coach cal sticks him in the post which is the best thing for the team and probably for cousins in the long run, but its doesnt show all his skill

i see you can’t read very well, where i said he is *$#@$# “fast 260 pounder”??..
talking about dribble or dunk..this is too funny, looks like player who makes you speechless with his dunk is better then good even little dominating player..i saw alot of fine moves and some dunks and thats enough for me to see that he is not terrible athlete(NOT SAYING HE IS ATHLETIC ONCE AGAIN)

lailai I never said he would not be a alright big man but dont get so caught up in college stats that you think it will translate over. Most times it doesn’t. I am not knocking dude or you but I am saying I saw him play and as good as he is, a lot of that stuff will not cut it in the nba. He will be able to show some improvement in predraft tests but if he doesnt i can see lottery but not top 5.

Lalaila you laugh about off the dribble and explosiveness….you must be right now no 7 footers handle the ball well in the NBA oh wait or atleast the ones that are no good. A big man has to handle the ball at the next level this is a mans league he is not gonna be able to use his strength like in high school and college. Also if you look at guys that don’t have the greatest moves off the dribble they are explosive to be affective. You are obviously a die hard kentucky wildcat fan that makes himself feel better bout his team by spewing nonsense out your fingers. Also how am I supposed to read something well if it is in broken english…go back read your posts they have the grammatical skills of a grade schooler.

yeah and actually this draft looks deeper than last year’s imo…

and.. golden worlds iggy.. i agree 100% that people gives too much love for athleticism, upside is more than that

believe me or not my english is good enough as for lithuanian(if you know where it is) lol

and i dissagree that his game won’t translate offcourse he won’t be that good like in college but still pretty good player imo..same thing we said on Blair or Love, they are more of energy guys but Cousins is still better sized player

yeah some guys height are not true but some are so we dont know how tall he really is. no one thought blake was 6’10 with shoes and thats what he turned out to be. cousins has the potential to be very good but he could also become average in the nba as well. you dont need to be a great athlete in the nba as a big man as long as you have great foot work and post skills. duncan, both gasol’s lopez, zach, k love have all showed that and there are countless more

I’m pretty much willing to bet that Cousins has enjoys a very good career. I think he may start off with only decent stats, but then I think he can develop into an Al Jefferson type

I really hopes he returns next year then go pro in 2011..if he does he’ll be number 1..he reminds me of Hall of Famer Bob Lanier..I said earlier this year..That he’ll be a lotto pick this year..Now he’s worked himself into the top 5..But i hope he returns to Kentucky another year…
