Minnesota Timberwolves plan to snag Memphis Grizzlies’ Rudy Gay next summer
    By Mark J. Miller

The Minnesota Timberwolves would apparently love to grab swingman Rudy Gay(notes) from the Memphis Grizzlies, according to Hoopsworld.
The Griz supposedly offered Gay a contract extension for $10 million annually that he rejected at the beginning of this month. It doesn’t seem likely that Gay will get offered more than that when he becomes a restricted free agent next summer. But maybe Memphis is giving him the blues so bad he’s gotta split town.
So the rumor is that the Wolves will see how Gay develops this season and pounce on July 1 when there will be a lot of action going on in the NBA free-agent market. The team reportedly wants to see Gay have a stronger “killer instinct” late in games by then.

Do you all think this is a good fit? Personally, I think Gay fits with this team but why would he go there?? It would have to be only for the money.

This is a great fit. Rudy in his NBA career has yet to play with an efficient PG and i think minnesota has something special in Jonny Flynn. The next thing minny needs to do is get an effective slashing shooting guard (perhaps a manny harris) in the draft. brewer is subpar and ellington is 1-dimensional. Other than that, they have nice solid role players like gomes and love and a very nice building block with al jefferson.

Lineup could look something like this:

    PG-Flynn
    SG-Corey Brewer (or draft pick)
    SF-Gay
    PF-Love
    C-Jefferson

with ramon sessions, ryan gomes, oleksiy pecherov, damien wilkins, and wayne ellington off the bench.

It looks good. Gay can be the OJ Mayo that Minnesota drafted before trading it.

I’ve got to somewhat agree with STEVEDOT2, they’re a losing team, why after years of not being on a competitive team go to another uncompetitive team? I don’t see it, but the Wolves may be the only team who offers him a max contract or something close, I just don’t see the Grizz spending that kind of money, I’m not sure if he’s worth that too, I mean the guy has unbelieveable athleticism matched with a pretty good skill level and he can basically guard five positions on the court too, but they’re right in wanting to see him develop a killer instinct, but it’s tough to do that when you have a bunch of guys on your team that want shots, in particular Mayo and Randolph.

T-Wolves have about 20 mill for next summer, meaning there is tons of cash to spend in the free agent market. We already know their not going to get the top name players in this free agency class because their a losing team and they don’t want someone who’s close to 30. Gay is a possibility and for 11 mill, why wouldn’t he go to MN? Who else would offer Gay that much money? MN would have about 9 mill left in cap space and if they could get a guy like Joel Przybilla that’ll be solid for the center position, he’ll be worth about a good 7 – 9 Mill. Meaning Big Al could go back and play at the PF position where he belongs making the Wolves a more balance teams. Maybe they’ll even be lucky enough in the draft and pick up a guy like Evan Turner or Wes Johnson. Imagine a line up like that.

    PG – Flynn
    SG – Even Turner/Wes Johnson
    SF- Gay
    PF – Jefferson
    C – Przybilla

Bench – Brewer, Gomes, Love, Session, Pecherov, Ellinton, Hollins

Front court rotation of: Przybilla, Jefferson, Love, Hollins and Pecherove
Back court of: Flynn, Draft, Gay, Session, Ellinton, Brewer and Gomes. Don’t forget Ricky Rubio in two years.

This makes MN young, deep and talented led by Jefferson in the post offensively, Gay at the Wing, and the shot blocking persence of Przybilla.

They also have the rights to Pekovic still, and they also could possibly get two other first rounders from Charlotte and Utah, as long as Charlotte makes the playoffs and Utah has the 18th pick or lower.

    PG: Jonny Flynn, Ramon Sessions
    SG: Wesley Johnson, Wayne Ellington
    SF: Rudy Gay, Corey Brewer
    PF: Jefferson, Love
    C: Pekovic, Hollins

They won’t keep anybody from this last season’s roster besides Flynn, Sessions, Brewer, Ellington, Jefferson, Love, and Hollins, Gomes will be gone by the trade deadline, he’s owed something like $5 million next season and if he’s released before he’s due that the team that has his rights won’t owe him it. Kahn will trade him, they just have to keep having him get those 27 point nights so he has some “real” value, otherwise they probably won’t get anything more than an expiring contract for him, maybe a second rounder too.

the market doesnt mean much if you have a winning team or winning attitude.. there are alot of bad teams in big markets. you can get endorsement money anywhere these days. isn’t gay a restricted free agent?..so the grizz can match any offer right

I don’t think Memphis will match anything more than 10.5 million for Gay which means the Wolves can offer something like 11.5 Million to take Gay away from Memphis. Wolves looks like the only team other than Memphis willing to pay Gay that much money. Gay’s dream team would be to play somewhere in Miami or New Orleans but they don’t have the cash to prevent Memphis from matching that offer.

Maybe they do a sign and trade deal with the Wolves in this case. They get Gomes for Gay. Works best for both teams. Gomes is not that bad of a player. He doesn’t need the ball much and plays good defense which means, more shots for Mayo.

I always wanted Gay to come up here in Minnesota, we need an athletic wing that can take the pressure off of Flynn and Jefferson. Add in possibly multiple 1st round picks (maybe trade 1 of those with Gomes or not?) and there’s a lot of potential for this team.

I just don’t know why he’d want to go to Minnesota other than the money, we’re more than a couple years away from contending and we’re already behind teams like Oklahoma that are on the rise. Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in Miami with Wade possibly.

Portland might give up some depth and make a trade for Rudy Gay also…that might make more sense? Either way, I’d love to see Rudy Gay out of Memphis and get some national exposure.

That’s who I wanted them to pick in the first place. I was upset when we didn’t take him in the draft. He was my first choice even before Roy. It’ll be a great fit for us, plus I still feel we got screwed in the Mayo/Love trade. Memphis you owe us one.
