Hey guys. I hope I dont offend anyone but everyone on here has it wrong about Ebanks. Everyone says he is just an athlete, but that is way off. I am a WVU fan so I have watched every game this year and all of last year. (Dont think Im a band wagon guy, I have loved them since I was like 5) Ebanks isnt a great athlete. Now, he is an athlete because you almost have to be to play at WVU, but he isnt anything special. Again, I ask if any of you have ever watched him play. He isnt fast or really all that agile. He doesnt exactly jump out of the gym. So I ask, why does everyone say he is a great athlete? Show me a clip or something that has lead you to believe this. The thing that makes Devin so special is the fact that he is long and his versatility. He can do, pretty much, everything. There were stints last year where he and Butler were the backcourt of PG/SG for the Eers. He lead the team in rebounding and was a great passer. Also, he is listed at 6’9 and he has like a 7’5 wingspan. That is, IMO, why people think he is an athlete. To me, his athletic ability is comparable that of Kevin Durant. If you look at Durant, he isnt faster than anyone or a superb jumper, he is just freakishly long.

Again, I hope I didnt offend anyone but Devin Ebanks is an average athlete with great versatility and length. Please post the YouTube clips that make you believe he is a great athlete.

    Thanks!

Hah i dont think your offending anyone….but yeah maybe the Rudy Gay comparisons are a little off base…However, he is definitely a pro, He plays within himself taking mostly 2 point jump shots, rebounds well and has an NBA body…He is going to be a good pro…and by the way Durant is a pretty good athlete

I’m not sure what type of athlete he is really.  From what I’ve seen he does look above average but nothing spectacular.

I wonder what his vertical is?

You make a great point:  Length can make players appear more athletic than they actually are.  This could very well be the case with Ebanks.

It will be interesting to see how he does in the combine especially in the athleticism tests.

Im not sure about Ebanks, but Durant’s vert was like 33 and his agility drills were all slower than Oden’s.

I watched him play both of his games this year, I was impressed by his agressiveness and form on his jumpshot. He was very active and even when he didn’t pull down a rebound, block a shot or convert offensively, his presence was felt. I expect him to get even better as the season progresses.

Oden also Beat durant in the verticle test jumping at 35 inches. Durant is a terrible athlete to watch going through drills but when you get a game or scrimmage going thats where he shines

Ebanks might be a top 10 pick but he’s overrated

I agree with 8th, and the thing people need to realize is that they’re playing basketball, not running a decatholon. Durant is a great example, and Iguodala is another. Iggy put up a 34″ max vert off the run at the combine, but due to long arms, giant hands and great fluidity he looks like a damn freak out there. That dunk he had the other night was the best of the year so far.

He’s not average athletically, he’s a good athlete to me. He looks pretty smooth when he runs up and down the floor. But I agree, he’s like a Kevin Durant type athlete, meaning he’ll probably be slower and less agile in drills, but in game situations it’s obvious he’s a good athlete whose length only makes his athleticism seem better than it really is. He’s probably nothing more than average as a leaper, but his arms compensate for that. And he’s above average at everything else athletically, so yea he’s a good athlete.

But drafting him in the top 10 would be making the same mistake Minnesota make when they took Corey Brewer, he’s more of a top 20 guy to me.

Yeah I think he is a good athlete also, not average, he is 6’10 so it’s hard to find a player with spectacular athletisicsm at that size anyways. In the last game I seen one play where in crunch time he stripped the ball from their PG? one of their guards and went coast to coast for the slam and1. On that play alone we got to see his versatility, agility, and hops. He is a med-good jump athlete but a very nice run-n-jump athlete from what i have seen

Oh and let’s not blow the Durant-hops out of proportion, Durant is an extremely good athlete. 33 vert don’t mean anything. Dwight Howard, has a vert somewhere in the mid 30’s yet he is an incredible athlete.

Why is Ebanks highly rated? I don’t see it.

In this draft there are many high potential guys that I’m starting to believe this draft may dissapoint

Devin Ebanks reminds me of a Corey Brewer or Trevor Ariza type.

    NBA Comparison: Rudy Gay/Sean Elliott

Strengths: An offensive minded wing with good scoring ability … At 6’8,” gets a lot of elevation on his jumpshot and boasts a nice looking stroke with a high release point … Very tough for defenders to check or block his shot … Has a lot of potential because of his length and coordination … Should be able to “put it all together” when he adds strength and better balance … Takes and makes difficult shots … Nice arc and form on his shot … Capable of handling the ball to an extent and should be able to improve his ability to create shots and get to the rim … His game is tailor-made to play the role of a scorer … His huge wingspan enhances his athleticism making up for decent but not extraordinary leaping ability …
Weaknesses: Ball handling and body control … Currently he struggles to effectively get to the hoop against aggressive defenders due to a shaky handle and inability to muscle through contact … Should hit the weights and add more muscle … Extra core and lower body strength would do him a lot of good: improving his balance and leaping ability … Has had some disciplinary issues in the past, but nothing recently … Role should be as a scorer, does not possess great court vision

Offense: An explosive offensive player. Gets a quarter of his offense from each of isolations, spot ups, and a blend of fast breaks and post ups. Does most of his damage with his jumper. Possesses solid form and has improved his footwork dramatically over time. Gets great elevation and has a high release point. Prone to forcing some shots over defenders, especially off the bounce. Decent three point shooter, still has room to improve his consistency though. Takes a lot of pull up jumpers, using his quickness to get inside and his leaping ability to rise above traffic. Capable catch and shoot player who can knock down shots running off of screens and with a hand in his face. Athleticism is a blessing and curse since is makes him a threat to score one-on-one, but allows him to get some shots off that he probably shouldn’t take. Can get to the rim driving in either direction and has no problem creating separation. Has improved his ball-handling since he entered the League, only augmenting his fantastic first step. On the turnover prone side, and doesn’t make his teammates better. Brings little to nothing to the table as a passer, and needs to improve his ability to find the open man when he draws additional defenders. Doesn’t get to the line at the rate his athleticism could warrant. Possesses outstanding tools, but still needs to refine his shot selection, pick and choose his spots off the dribble, take on contact, and see the floor better.

    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Carmelo-Anthony-1520/

Overview: An elite offensive talent who will go down as one of the best offensive players of his generation. Possesses excellent size and strength for a small forward, to the point that he can legitimately play the four for stretches. Shows a very quick and powerful first step and great leaping ability. Not an incredibly high leaper, but gets off the floor quickly and has a great second bounce. Doesn’t always run the floor as hard as he’s capable of. An extremely versatile scorer. Will take his man off the dribble and knock down the mid-to-long-range jump shot against slower defenders or go to work in the post against smaller ones. Doesn’t always have the best shot selection, but is one of the most prolific scorers in the League. Rebounds the ball at a very good rate for his position. Won’t make much of an effort defensively.

Offense: Gets roughly half of his touches from a combination of isolations, post ups and fast breaks, but scores most of

his points in two distinct ways: dunking and taking shots from just inside NBA three-point range. Possesses both great

finishing ability and an impressive outside shooting stroke. Has a very quick release and elevates over defenders

effortlessly to get off shots while defended. Releases the ball quickly, and fades away naturally, making his shot very difficult to block. Ability to get his shot off in any situation

leads him to take shots that most players wouldn’t be able to. Not as strong a three point threat, although has improved that part of his game recently. Capable of hitting shots off the

dribble, but he has a tendency to fall in love at times with these low percentage shots. Shows very impressive ball handling ability for a player his size. Uses as many jabs or dribbles as he needs to set his man up. Able to drive in either

direction, but is more effective going left. Uses a lot of in and out moves to set his defender up before lowering his shoulder and powering to the rim. Likes to initiate contact and move his defender rather than turning the corner.

Iggy- I agree with a lot you are saying here.  However, Brewer was a lot better in college than Ebanks is in my opinion.

For some scouts think Ebanks has a ton of upside…that is the only reason he is projected as a lottery pick.  I’m kinda neutral about him right now.

    upside: rudy gay/carmelo
    downside: corey brewer

carmelo scores in 2 distinct ways
    1) a long range shot from a step inside the 3
    2) dunks

Ebanks is a high risk high reward player

that is an understatement, I think he’s up to 215 now, he SHOULD be a “pure scorer”

He’s nowhere near Rudy Gay IMO. In College, Gay was a tad underrated. He had some skills. Ebanks..I dunno. I just feel if he’s your lotto pick you must have a pick to waste or you don’t know about value

He’s not even the best player on his team IMO

Yea, I agree that Brewer was a much better player than Ebanks is, Brewer was the Most Outstanding Player in Florida’s last National Title run, hard to see Ebanks doing that lol, but I see him as the same type of prospect. He’ll be developed as a lockdown defender, with the offensive tools he’ll need getting developed later on in his NBA career,

The point of this post was to make people realize that Ebanks isnt just an athlete at this point. He is an average/above average athlete with great versatility and seem to be a crunch time player. Remember, he hasnt played all that great because he has been out for about 2 weeks. Those 2 games in that tourney were his first activity with the team besides shoot around. He is a highly rated prospect because of his versatility, not his athletic ability. Also, at LBJ’s camp, he measured in at 6’7 so please stop with the 6’10 stuff.

Also, incase you didnt know, Im a WVU fan so im not a hater or anything.
