Here are some of my early impressions of some of this season’s 1 Rd talent.

Cole Aldrich: Solid, but is he overrated? Doesn’t seem to have a lot of agility, but has decent end to end speed and exceptional instincts. The thing that intrigues me is a lot of scouts aren’t THAT high on him, but it seems to be a consensus so far that he’s a top 10 pick. I think that has a lot to do with Brook Lopez falling to 10 and to a much lesser degree Kevin Love being questioned as a top 5 pick. Both guys are killing it in the league despite not being freakishly athletic big men. To me right now I say pick 11 to 20 for Aldrich.

Derrick Favors:A lot of people disagree with me, but this guy will be an unstoppable NBA player in 4 years, and will either be the #1 player of the 2010 draft or be right there with Wall. Mark my words. This kid manages to get double doubles despite playing alongside one of the fiercest rebounders in the country and he hasn’t figured it all out yet! I’m telling you…

John Wall: The consenus #1 pick except for about 5 or so teams. I’m sure everyone has heard (and seen) how great Wall has been so far, but allow me to put on the breaks on the “greatest of” talk. What separates Wall from his current competion is his end to end speed and athleticism. Those attributes are found in NBA point guards on every team…even on every bench for goodness sake. What separates Jason Kidd, Chris Paul or Brandon Jennings from two solid NBAers Mike Conley or a Mario Chalmers? It’s not physical gifts. It’s superior court vision. So far John Wall has shown average NBA court vision. But he’s still in the top half of NBA point guards. It will be scary if he has the mindset to get a lot better.

Xavier Henry: I admit I like the guy’s game a lot. But the Paul Pierce comparisons are ridiculous (at this point) for one main reason: ballhandling. Henry has shown himself to be lethal off the ball, but he almost never has the ball in his hands. Pierce did everything when he was in college, and he was a top offensive option for his team. Henry may not even be the 3rd option on his team, which allows him to roam and catch awesome alleys while defenses focus on the other stars. Henry will be snatched up by a team with an established point, which most likely will be in late teens but no later than early 20s.

Greg Monroe: I hope people keep sleeping on this guy, since it looks like my team (thunder) may not be picking in the top 9 next year. Most people don’t understand that what makes you sucessful in college isn’t neccesarily what makes you an NBA all-star. Georgetown’s system has a Princeton flavor to it, which is why a mobile big man won’t stand out as much as a traditional center. And Monroe still produces. No he’s not the next Olajuwon and no one has said that, but he’s better than a lot of people give him credit for. Just watch.

Evan Turner: Maybe my favorite player of this draft class. I love versitile guys, and this guy reminds me of one of my all time favorites: Penny Hardaway. The thing about Turner I fear though is he may be TOO versitile in the NBA. He’s not great at anything yet but he’s good at everything, so his contributions could tend to get drowned out or overlooked. For example if Turner gets 12 pts, five assists, five rebounds and a steal or two but his teammate goes for 40 pts, a measley 2 assists and a couple rebounds, who gets the all-star love? You guessed it. Now that’s fine for a game here and there, but there’s the problem. Turner is capable of AVERAGING 12, 5, 5, and 1 or more as a rookie, which is phenomenal. Turner needs to work on his outside shot and even though he is a solid ballhandler, he needs to become better if he wants to play consistent point guard minutes at the next level.

Any thoughts on my thoughts? Or how about yall’s thoughts on other 1st round locks?

I like everything you said especially on Evan Turner and Greg Monroe…I will disagree with you a little bit on Xavier Henry, hes not the number 1 option on his team, but its the number 1 team in the country and hes a freshman!! He also scored 27 points in their opener against Hofstra who is a pretty good team….But other than that I agree with everything you said I think Favors is definitely better than Beasley

Devin Ebanks- Gonna have a really good college year….I think his game will take a little long to develop in the NBA but can be a very good NBA player, hes probably my favorite player in this draft class along with Turner

I agree with every single thing you said..

I’d like to add a few players in:

Donatas Motiejunas: Has the highest high risk, high-reward reward potential of any prospect coming out in the next 2 years probably. Similar to Ricky Rubio in that sense. But there is no denying his talent for his size and the skill set that he has. He seems to lack toughness and the mentality to defend and rebound consistently, maybe due to a lack of core strength? But he’ll go in the lottery, because he has an incredibly high ceiling due to all the skills he possesses. He could end up being a Pau Gasol type, or he could just as likely be a Majiec Lampe type. That’s why GM’s and scouts get paid and I don’t.

Willie Warren: He is the best scorer in this 2010 class, but he may be held back from starter minutes due to a lack of size. Unless of course, he goes to a team with a big PG. He has range that’s past the NBA line, crazy handles, and the 1st step, strength and athleticism to get to the rim and finish. I don’t think he’ll be a big factor on D, which could scare some teams away from starting him. But I think he has legit All-Star ability.

agree with almost everything, all i said in my mock..like to said: Greg is like a sleeper, Favors is very very good, Wall is even better , Cole isn’t future’s allstar IMO Turner is ready for the NBA…the only thing, i absolutely disagree with Henry down to 20s’ he is locked lottery pick and IMO he is top10 talent, i don;t see him worse tahn #3 option in his team and i see him even leading is scoring, this is amazing for 18yrs old kid playing with might in the best team in all college basketball

I 100% agree with all. I love Henry’s game. He reminds me of Paul Pierce.

Wesley Johnson is a 1st round lock

What do you guys think of Kyle Singler? I hate Duke, but I gotta give the kid his props. Here’s a guy that if he gets picked by a playoff team that knows how to spread the floor, he can contribute earlier than expected as a 6’9″ versitile swingman. I didn’t like him last year, but is it me or does he look a little more fluid and confident this year?

Your not the only one that see his new found confidence. Thanks to Coach K finally getting a good recruiting class with some big men (Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly) Kyle has now been able to move to his natural position at SF.

I said before the season Duke has an outside chance for the title if their two freshmen big men turn out to be legit. I still think Michigan State is the favorite though, with Kansas my second choice. I like Ryan Kelly as a NBA prospect more than the higher-rated Plumlee.

Could not agree more about Favors. Glad someone finally mentioned how much potential he really has. I would love to see him on the Nets in the backcourt with Brook Lopez. Greg Monroe will be solid, too. The Princeton offense really prevents one player from getting star- like numbers. Besides, look at Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert and Dajuan Summers. They’ve all proved they can be really servicable NBA players despite averaging subpar stats in college. Willie Warren reminds me of a bit better version of Rodney Stuckey more than anyone else. This class will produce a lot of good players and quite a few all-stars, too.

Derrick Favors is going to be so good it’s not even funny. Trust me, once ACC play starts he will put it all together. Ed Davis, my man, you better bring your A game against him.

Wesley Johnson is obviously a lock for the first round. Is he a lock for a top-10 pick? Probably.
