TheFactionCoalition.comParticipantWho is the best DRAFTING team? The worst? I’m looking at teams or GM’s that consistently make the right decisions, may take a surprise pick that turns out well, or do well with the little they have to work with. I’m not thinking the Cavs because LBJ, he was the obvious choice, or the Bucks because they took Jennings 10th, he dropped lower than expected and they got an AMAZING pick, but it’s not like they surprised anybody by taking him.
My top teams:
Portland, remember the Jailblazers? After getting rid of everyone from Bonzi to Wallace they reinvented their team and reinvigorated that city. Their picks include: Aldridge and Roy(via trade) in the same draft AND there was that whole Roy vs. Foye debate before they came out, so they made a tough decision in making the trade to get Roy. Also they took Sergio Rodriguez near the end of the first round. That’s a GREAT draft. Then there is the BIG O and Martell Webster. They drafted their entire starting 5 and there aren’t a lot of teams you can say that about.Sacramento: If you consider the last two years alone they have Evans and one of the year’s surprises in Casspi. I know they passed on Jennings but I wonder if they would still take Evans if they could do it all over again. Last year was Jason Thompson and even though they didn’t draft him they got Donte Greene before he ever played a game for the Rockets, so they did target him sort of. JT was a huge surprise for everyone, people thought they should have taken Randolph or in my case Hibbert. They passed on some good talent like CDR, Ryan Anderson, and even though I think he was overrated last year, Courtney Lee. Year before was Hawes and they would probably take Al Thornton or Gasol if they could do it over, but Gasol was a steal late in the 2nd. Add in previous successes like Peja, Jason Williams (passed on Dirk and Pierce!!), Turkoglu, Gerald Wallace, KMartin, Garcia and the Kings pretty much always draft better than the teams in front of them and behind them. If you redo every draft since 1998 they probably got top 10 talent even if their pick was 23. Other than Quincy Douby they have drafted very significant players.
Spurs:
Duncan was the obvious pick, but I’m more focusing on Tony Parker and Gino. Those are two of the biggest draft steals in the last 15 years. Maybe it’s the Spurs ability to pick talent or it’s the players that were able to feed off of being drafted by a championship team, but add in Blair and they are really good at finding talent late in the draft.Thunder:
Another team built completely through the draft…this is getting long so I’ll just say Durant, Westbrook, and Jeff Green range from very solid to great picksI know there are other teams that do well but this is just off the top of my head. I know there are other teams that have made good decisions that were tough, but these teams seem to be the most consistent lately. As for the worst?
Minnesota: I looked at their draft history since Garnett because I knew they traded Roy, Mayo (for Love so it wasn’t horrible) Chalmers, Lawson. So if they drafted talent it was traded, and they passed on too many names for me to even list.
3 years ago the Clips would be on here but Eric Gordon and Thornton were nice surprises. Griffin was the obvious first pick at the time and he hasn’t played this season so they don’t get any credit for that.

That’s pretty ugly. I agree with Minn. that pg fiasco and they chose wrong on Foye/Roy. I like Lawson more than Flynn right now, and who knows how the Rubio thing will turn out, but they have a lot of needs so I have no idea what they were thinking.

gatorheelsParticipantCharlotte Bobcats have done a pretty terrible job overall drafting the last 5 years or so in my opinion.
2005- Drafted 5th pick Felton….should’ve picked Bynum. 13th pick Sean May….should’ve picked Granger
2006- Drafted Adam Morrison. Should’ve picked Roy, Gay, or even Tyrus Thomas.
2007- Drafted Brandon Wright but traded him. Should’ve drafted Noah & kept him.
2008- Drafted Augustin. Should’ve drafted Brook Lopez or Anthony Randolph
Drafted Ajinca. Should’ve drafted Courtney Lee, George Hill, or Ryan Anderson.
2009- Drafted Henderson- I thought there were several players with way more upside at that 12th pick.

illinimanmarkParticipantI like your list, it seems solid. I know your thread is about teams but I’d like to nominate Michael Jordan for the worst drafting list. He’s had his share of busts in a very small window. Also, with the exception of Bosh Toronto has had some awful drafts too. Michael Bradley, Rafeal Araujo, and Bargnani (he’s not awful but they could have done better) come to mind.

2002- Curtis Borchardt over prince,boozer,scola, rodger mason
2003-reece gaines over david west,ridnour, diaw, josh howard, mo williams
2005-fran vasquez over granger, david lee, bradon bass
2006- reddick over Thabo Sefolosha, rondo,shannon brown
2007-reyshawn taylor over marc gasol,ramon sessions

thetruthParticipantare you wasted like gucci mane ? you think granger was a bad pick? he is your franchise player who is a all-star. and the main reason why people still watch and care about the pacers .but yeah i agree bird is like jordan great at playing the game bad at drafting/manager

QHaynes20Yea, I agree. Thomas gave us Balkman ( who was a good rookie), Collins ( role player), Chandler ( potential above average starter)
But we had so many players we missed on…NY had to go on the list.

Minnesota- Brandon Roy-Randy Foye rolls off the toung I like that 😀
