JoeWolf1As a lot of you guys know, I’m a big KU fan, so I’ll give you guys updates from time to time, I know their is a slight bias, but for the most part im pretty objective and I consider myself down to earth as far as analysis goes. Take it for what it’s worth, but there are a lot of potential pros on Ku’s team so here is what I think.
I just finished watching KU’s first game against Hofstra as well as watching Xavier Henry for the first time as a collegiate.
Within the first few minutes of the game, Xavier hit a 3 pointer, drove the lane got fouled and sank both free throws, and converted a 3 point play after being fouled on a put back dunk. As the game progressed, his jumpshot was on as he hit 5-8 3’s and finished 8-12 from the field and 6-6 from the foul line for 27 points 4 rbs 2 asts a steal and a block. I know Hofstra isn’t the toughest of opponents but Xaviers’ Bball IQ, phsyical prowess, and well rounded game made me a believer that his stellar play will continue throughout the year for an extremely talented and deep Kansas team. I think he is going to be one and done for sure, Evan Turner had a great debuit for this season and I’m excited to see Avery Bradley play, along with Willie Warren the 2010 draft could be chalked full of talented shooting guards.Other notes, Marcus and Marieff Morris are both about 20 pounds heavier with muscle and in great shape. They are much improved from last year, and although I think they are both 4 year players, if they keep improving at this rate they could be two potential first rounders. Thomas Robinson is a beast super raw, but his potential as a rebounder, shot blocker, and energy player is very much evident. Kansas probably has 8 pro players on their roster, and Elijah Johnson is a very quick energetic young point guard with a knack for getting in passing lanes and running the floor.
Collins played very smart and heated up from beyond the arc as the game progressed, even in a blowout he played under controlled and not once brought the ball up the court and popped a 3 without passing. Aldrich played limited minutes, but still had 11 and 9 with 4 blocks, he looks even more polished and is in good shape, he showed intensity around the rim ripping rebounds from opponents and blocking shots with authority. Tyshawn Taylor spread the ball around nicely, played good D and was a great glue guy for this talented KU team, I still think another year of college will help elivate his status, but although not a standout on this KU team, his talent doesn’t go un noticed.

quincey hodgeshenry did everything i figured hed do against a bad team like this..im waiting to see how he plays against a good team with a good player who plays his same position..i think hes gonna be good but i just have to see against real comp…i do think that extra weight he put on of muscle has slowed him down and bit because he first step used to be alot quicker

JoeWolf1I hear you on the competition, Quincey, KU plays Memphis and UCLA, Cal and Tennessee in non-conference so hopefully those will be more even competition. He may not have as quick of first step, but he is still a really smooth player. He is every bit of 6’6” and at 225-230 with this fluidity, and a solid, but not freakish jumping ability, he is very effective. I’m curious to see how he’ll match up against Avery in the Texas game, Kansas is so deep I don’t think we’ll really get a lot of opportunities to watch him match up against bigger post players.

quincey hodgesyeah he is very smooth and has a deadly jump shot..i dont think he will match up wit bradley..bradly is too fast and vice versa henry is too big..plus im pretty sure tex will play bradley at the pg so him and collins will be matched up

SlimParticipant1st game is a warm up game, scheduled 2 get
ur player’s confidence up not supposed to play real competition and expose ur weaknesses
esp this early in season0 - Posted on: Fri, 11/13/2009 - 6:18pm #229560

JoeWolf1I bet they put Taylor on Bradley, he is a little taller and just as quick as Collins, You think Henry will match up against James in the Texas game?
As to the competition, I know man, but you can still see how the player plays against lesser competition. You don’t need to be playing Michigan State to see a guy has a great jumper and a good Bball IQ.

SlimParticipanti know i just wanna know if he improved his pull up jumper off the dribble, thats the biggest knock on him
everything else size, iq, range is solid0 - Posted on: Fri, 11/13/2009 - 6:24pm #229563

JoeWolf1He didn’t really use it much in this game, Okeke, He spotted up and shot off screens very well. He did drive the lane a bit, but mostly drew fouls doing so and he converted on all 6 at the line. He ran the floor well, and played ok D for a freshman’s first college game. He’ll be an improved defender by the end of the year I’m sure of it. He is really impressive physically, I didn’t watch any of his highschool stuff except for clips so I can’t really say if his muscle decreased his speed, but he is fast (not that quick ) and is really fluid, his size, outside shot, and elevation on his jumper paired with his ability to drive is going to make him very hard to guard. I didn’t see anything that would indicate he improved his off the dribble jumper, but he didn’t really even need to bust that out tonight either.
