I’ve heard rumors coming out of Memphis that past prep league standout Ross Montague again failed to qualify academically at Vanderbilt, but has been working out with Corey Brewer, a past middle-Tennessee great, and his trainer. Can anyone confirm or deny? If this is true, I could see a team taking a chance with him late in the second-round. Maybe the Grizzlies if only for the attendance advantages of having a hometown hero on the roster?

I guess he’s nineteen or twenty at this point, graduated in 2008. He’s a 6’6″ guard, one of his strengths in high-school was his great court vision. Floated between 180-190lbs and could definitely have benefited from some time spent in the weight room, but I haven’t seen him since, so maybe he’s put on some muscle. He was above-average in high-school, but his parents wouldn’t let him on the AAU circuit, and he was forced to play in the post where his true talents could never really get noticed. Incredible reputation in the street games around Memphis, and it was a pleasure to see him play in those. It was there that he really got to show-off his flashy passing style and silky smooth jumper. If he’s really devoting himself to the game(and reports have been that he is), I’d expect some great things out of him. Just hoping that someone out there closer to the situation can provide some more information.

Wow… Ross Montague. Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. He had such a bright basketball future ahead of him after a standout prep career in Memphis. But yeah I guess Vandy’s academics were a little too much for him. If you remember, this happened to Demarre Carroll a few years ago and he’s now a rookie for the Grizzlies. But addressing these rumors, I actually have heard this from a few sources. From what I’ve heard, they’ve been working out at some local courts around Nashville. Montague seems to think he has a shot at the big show. However, I don’t see him getting drafted this year. I’ve heard he’s going to spend a year overseas (the rumor is in Lithuania) to refine his basketball IQ and get some professional playing experience. He has the skills (height, agility, rebounding, a honey-sweet jumper, toughness, moxie, etc) but needs to get some playing experience under his belt. With all of his academic issues, he hasn’t played regularly since high school and that has pushed some scouts away. A year abroad will do him good. Expect to hear his name tossed around come 2011.

Living in Winston-Salem, I mostly cover the ACC, but I stumbled across Montague a few months ago when I checked in to see how Elliot Williams was doing with Memphis after transferring from Duke. Memphis authorities and scouts say that Montague has really developed his upper body and quickened his first step since his high school days. My only concern is that he hasn’t actually played college basketball, other than intramurals and pick-up games. I don’t see the Bobcats or Hawks (the two teams I hear the most about over here) taking a chance on him, but Lord knows the Grizzlies will take a chance on anybody. Eyewitnesses say Montague at times struggled defensively against larger interior players, namely Barrett Jones and Ben Nesbit of Evangelical Christian, but that experience could serve him well if he starts having to guard Hasheem Thabeet in practice. Only time will tell.

Thanks gries, I’m happy to hear that. To me, this is just a great story about a guy chasing his dream, and I’d be ecstatic for him if he got at least a work-out this year. Maybe the Commercial Appeal will send someone to do a feature piece on this guy like they did for Lester Hudson a couple of years ago. Seem like pretty similar stories, except for those bastards at the NCAA Clearinghouse gave Hudson a shot to make something of himself while everything points to them just keeping Montague from his potential livelihood. The NCAA with all of its self-righteous bull just makes me sick. It’s crazy how they have the ability to alter someone’s life like they have Ross’. They need to realize that, the way that the NBA draft is set-up, the NCAA currently has a monopoly on the marketing and development of young talent, and if schools are willing and able to allow sub-par students to enroll because of what they as players can do for the school’s national image, popularity, and application pool, then the NCAA needs to allow those young-men to benefit from the system as well. Sorry for that rant, but that those rich, grown men can beat Montague’s potential career nearly to death, all because he wasn’t as gifted mentally as physically… Well, that’s just downright un-American.
