With the NBA draft combine measurements and athleticism test
results released, here’s how we see the NBA draft shaking out heading into early
June.

1.

Blake
Griffin

It’s not every year you get a sure bet even with the top
pick (2006 anyone?). Unloading Zach Randolph should be the first order
of business. Griffin gives them a power forward to build around for the
next 5 years (until he bolts). All the Rubio trade talk with the Clippers
appers to be just that, talk.
2.
Hasheem
Thabeet 		The Grizzlies are enamored with Thabeet’s defensive potential
and it appears he will be the pick. For a team that has had bad luck with
Spaniards, Rubio would be a huge gamble (contract buyout concerns) and
a tough one to recover from at 2 if the pick backfired. There’s always
the chance someone will move up to 2 for Rubio, but if the Grizzlies keep
the pick, Thabeet appears to be the choice.
3.
James
Harden		Harden lacks superstar potential, but then again that’s
what everyone thought about Brandon Roy before he was drafted. GM Sam
Presti could opt for Rubio, but he may be more trouble than he’s worth
with the huge buyout. This team is under the gun to build a winner around
Durant benfore he reaches the end of his contract and has a chance to
hit the open market. Harden measured extremely well in Chicago with a
6’10 wingspan and a legit 6’5 in shoes. He also shocked it with great
athleticism test numbers as well including a 37 inch vertical. He’s about
the most sure bet in this draft of anyone outside of Griffin.
4.
Ricky
Rubio 		There is a lot of speculation surrounding Rubio but he
hasn’t said anything publicly about his intentions since the lottery took
place. Rubio is a rare type of player that makes all those around him
better. The Kings are in need of a point guard and Sacramento would offer
a place where Rubio could develop into the man.
5.
Jordan
Hill 		The Wizards have Antawn Jamison, but could definitely
use a power forward, and Hill is one of the most intriguing players in
the entire draft. After picking up basketball late in highschool, Hill
has been on a tremendous development curve showing great improvement just
in the past year. One of the few guys with all star potential from this
draft.
6.
Stephen
Curry 		Curry is a hot name right now among scouts as many feel
he wont make it to the rumored Knicks promise at 8. His shooting and scoring
ability makes him highly sought after and it’s possible Minnesota could
look to trade down a few spots as they did last year. With all the small
forwards and point guards available, teams such as Minnesota with multiple
picks, can almost treat this like a football draft.
7.

Brandon
Jennings		Golden State is an up-tempo team and Nellie loves shooters
at every position. For Jennings that’s check and check. While he didn’t
shoot particularly well in Europe, he’s has an excellent shooting stroke.
He is a high risk/reward pick and for a team like the Warriors swinging
for the fences for a home run (last year they had great results with Randolph)
is the only way this team will be able to catch up with the elite level
teams in the West. The Warriors could also use this pick to help rid themselves
of bad contract decisions made in the past year: Maggette or Jackson,
but that wouldn’t be well received by fans.
8.
Jonny
Flynn 		Flynn gives the Knicks an athletic point guard to build
around. Considering his performance at MSG in the 6 OT game against UConn,
one would have to assume he plays well there. Flynn is high on the Knicks
short list of players after Curry.
9.
DeMar
DeRozan 		Toronto badly needs some athleticism on the perimeter
and DeRozan would provide just that. While he has a chance to go top 5,
a number of scouts still question his readiness and skill level. This
is an interesting pick for GM Colangelo as he can move in a number of
directions, whether it be looking for upside or instant help. DeRozan
would obviously be a move to the future, if he slid this far.
10.
Tyreke
Evans 		The salary cap strapped Bucks decision on draft day may
ultimately come down to which of their free agents they decide to resign
between Ramon Session and Charlie Villanueva. They ultimately may let
both of them walk. Tyreke Evans has a real chance to go in the top 10
after such a strong season at Memphis and would offer Milwaukee a young
scorer with playmaking ability from the perimeter.
11.
Chase
Budinger 		With Vince Carter considerably older than their young
nucleus (Lopez and Harris), an eventual replacement such as Budinger makes
sense for them. Budinger has had some solid workouts including his latest
in front of multiple teams in Oakland. The Nets brass have shown an affinity
towards Pac-Ten players.
12.

DeJuan
Blair 		MJ and Larry Brown will look for a player that can help
them sooner than later. Blair offers a more NBA ready player than guys
like Mullens and adds the type of toughness they need. They could also
look at players such as Henderson and James Johnson if available.
13.
Gerald
Henderson 		The Pacers took a 2-guard last year with Rush but the
Duke junior would offer another athletic wing prospect for a team lacking
in talent. Larry Bird values character as much as anyone and with the
Duke pedigree, Henderson meets that criteria. He also measured extremely
well at 6’5 with a 6’10 wingspan with good combine numbers as well.
14.
James
Johnson 		Johnson offers another NBA ready guy who should provide
immediate results. His 257 lbs almost seemed like a misprint following
the measurement numbers coming out, but he has supposedly added 8 lbs
since the season ended. He’s very skilled
15.

Jeff
Teague 		For a team in "semi-rebuilding" mode, adding
a point guard with upside like Teague makes sense. Dumars has a keen eye
for talent and after making the decision to blow the team up by dealing
Billups, this team can look to the future with their pick with a number
of potential options available such as Teague or possibly Mullens.
16.
BJ
Mullens 		The Bulls can afford to take a project such as Mullens
with a young centerpiece in Rose running the show. Mullens is so big and
athletic and after so many teams passed on DeAndre Jordan last year, it’s
unlikely they will make the same mistake again.
17.
Eric
Maynor 		Maynor could go as high as 10 or slip into the 20s. His
combine numbers were solid, but nothing outstanding. He did bench press
185 eight times which is impressive considering he only weighs 163 lbs.
He obviously needs to keep building his strength to hold his own at the
NBA level. Philly is a team full of athletes, so looking for stability
with a guy like Maynor would be a solid option.
18.
Terrence
Williams 		Williams has impressed a lot of scouts in workouts so far.
He has a lot of potential for a senior with the ability become a lock
down defender as well as excellent passing ability. Minnesota could go
in a number of directions but shooting guard appears to be an area of
need with the sudden decline of Mike Miller.
19.
Tyler
Hansbrough 		The Hawks have a solid team with a lot of talent at various
positions including power forward but tough , enthusiastic, energy guys
like Hansbrough are always in demand. Hansbrough would provide an excellent
back up to Al Horford for years to come.
20.
Wayne
Ellington 		The Jazz seem to always make good selections in the late
first round. Ellington is a smooth shooter who can spread the floor for
them along with Kyle Korver.
21.

Earl
Clark 		Earl Clark is definitely one of this year’s enigmas. He’s
a world class athlete with some very positive attributes but scouts worry
his head will derail him from reaching his potential. New Orleans may
very well put this pick up for auction as they did last year. A frustrating
situation for Hornets fans who missed out on players such as Darrell Arthur,
Mario Chalmers, DeAndre Jordan, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute at 27 last
year.
22.
Ty
Lawson 		Jason Kidd isn’t getting any younger. While Cuban will
likely attempt to resign him, Lawson would offer a potential repacement
in the next few years. He could go higher following an NCAA championship,
however his lack of size and low shooting point concerns scouts.
23.
Omri
Casspi 		Taking Casspi after Rubio would make a European sweep in
the first round for the Kings. He offers the type of toughness missing
from this team. Despite a funky release on his shot, Casspi has impressed
in workouts and figures to go in the mid-20s somewhere.
24.
Jrue
Holiday 		Everyone loves this guy but no one’s exactly sure why.
For someone being hyped as a potential lottery pick, too many question
marks surround him. Do we know that he can run the show and play point
guard? And if so, is this based on practices or high school play? He didn’t
play PG in high school. He’s got size and defensive ability, but so does
Toney Douglas. He’s solid all around and has a smooth game, but for someone
who was supposed to be so ready coming out of high school, he looked lost
most of the season, and for a team dying for a scorer (UCLA) Holiday didn’t
step up. 4th pick? Makes more sense at 34.
25.

Damion
James 		Having played in college alongside Durant, James has the
athleticism and abilities outside of scoring to gel with the franchise
talent. James is an athletic freak who would provide excellent punch off
the bench and could develop into a defensive stopper type.
26.
Tyler
Smith		Tyler Smith didn’t help himself much in the combine but
teams love his ability to play team ball. He’s extremely unselfish and
a good passer as well as a solid athlete. The Bulls could grab another
small forward at 16 such as Clark or Johnson, but with a number of solid
3s available, waiting and taking one here might be the better option.
27.
Derrick
Brown 		The long, lanky forward bench pressed 185 lbs an amazing
20 times, so obviously this is a guy that makes good use of the weight
room. Although Brown duplicates Hakeem Warrick to a degree, he shows a
little better foot speed to play on the perimeter. He’s an upside guy
with enough intrigue to get a team to bite late first, whether it’s Memphis
or another team trading for the pick. Teams such as Boston or San Antonio
could look to trade or buy this pick to add Brown for defensive purposes.
28.

DaJuan Summers		Summers could fall victem to a numbers game with so many
small forward in the same range. He has impressed teams in workouts with
his shooting ability and athleticism. He didn;t have great numbers at
Georgetown, but in the Princeton offense, who does? Minnesota can use
this third pick as a value pick after addressing need with their 6 and
18 picks.
29.
Toney
Douglas 		The Lakers could use some help in the backcourt, particularly
someone that could come in and be a strong defender like Douglas. Douglas
had the fastest 3/4 court sprint in the combine at 3.03 seconds, showing
his great speed. He also shows solid shooting and scoring ability. Does
he really have the ability to run a team is the question.
30.
Taj
Gibson 		The Cavs appear to have a year to make it happen before
LeBron makes a long term decision on his future. Based on the help he
got during the playoffs, it may be getting close to panic time. The frontcourt
was obviously exposed in their series with Orlando. With no centers available,
power forward may be their best alternative. Gibson may not have much
strength, but his length offers an appealing option to throw at Superman
defensively next year.

    It’s no surprise when I say Aran did an excellent job with this mock draft. Of course there are a couple areas where I disagree, but overall I thought it was right on time.

    1. Glad to see D. Blair move up on the list. I think he could go even higher than twelve.
    2. Toney Douglas could be a gem for the Lakers.
    3. Ty Lawson going to Dallas makes so much sense, why didn’t others see this?
    4. BJ Mullens will probably go around 16-20, but whoever takes him will be making a mistake. In my opinion, he will be next on the long list of guys with potential who never make it in the NBA.
    5. Curry makes a lot of sense for Minnesota, but they rarely do what’s best for them.
    6. Memphis has to take a guy like Thabeet or trade the pick. He may be a bust, but he may also become a guy who blocks 5 or 6 shots per game. Who wouldn’t want someone like that on their team? I’m betting he becomes a defensive star.
    7. I’m glad to see Aran put Hansbrough in a position where I thought he belonged all along. I think he’s going to be a solid role player for many years, bringing toughness and consistency, along with a team first attitude.
    8. I never saw Casspi play, so I’m wondering, other than toughness, why he’ll be a good fit for Sacramento.

    dude…. this isn’t your rankings. I don’t care if you don’t think Jrue is going to be good, the point of a mock draft is to guess where he’ll be picked. If you honestly think that Jrue Holiday will last until 24~ you’re an idiot.

    Also, I’m not sure why everyone is so hot on Toney Douglas to LA… is that because Chad Ford put that in his mock draft? Toney Douglas is a Shannon Brown clone, so why would they draft him?

    I also don’t see the Bulls going after Mullens at 16… but that’s just my opinion. Maybe at 26 if he’s still around. I see them snagging a 2 for insurance if Ben doesn’t resign.

    Pistons drafting a PG? Rodney Stuckey? Will Bynum? I donno man, seems to me they have more glaring weaknesses than that.

    Not sure Curry is the best fit with Foye in MN’s backcourt…but as a t-wolves fan I’d still love to see him on our roster.

    Clark is low and Holiday is way too low. I agree with Holiday’s assessment, but it seems he will still be selected high.

  6. I have a problem w/ this
    I have a problem w/ this mock.

    – There is no way Holiday falls all the way down to 24th. There are some issues, but teams are extremely high on his potential. I doubt he’ll go 4th to Sacramento, but he won’t fall to 24th.

    – Earl Clark won’t fall all the way down to 21st. I don’t see it happening. He has too many positives for him to drop that low. He’s a big 3, who can also play the 4. He’s too versatile to drop that low.

    – Chicago picking Mullens 16th is a reach. He’s 2-3 years away from helping ANY team.

    – I also don’t see why Minnesota would draft Stephen Curry, when he’s similar to Randy Foye.

    – The Bobcats will not select Blair. They need a true center in order to move Omeka Okafor to his natural position or a shooting guard to back up the aging Raja Bell. They already have Boris Diaw & Sean May (who’s an overweight power forward who’s had knee injuries, similar to Blair). Since there aren’t any centers who are ready to play now in this draft, I look for them to pick a shooting guard.

    – I like Teague, but Detroit already has Rodney Stuckey & they really like Will Bynum. Why would they pick a point guard when they’re front court is old? This team is in rebuilding mode, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they did draft Mullens… However in my opinion, it’d be a reach considering he won’t contribute until 2-3 years down the line. One thing that separates Mullens & DeAndre Jordan, is that Jordan isn’t afraid to bang w/ the big boys in the NBA.

    – The Pacers aren’t taking Henderson. They need a point guard (Jarret Jack probably won’t resign) or power forward. They just drafted Rush last year & they really like him. They also have Marquise Daniels who played really well this past season.

    I just don’t like this mock at all… I could keep going.

  7. Accurate/Inaccurate mock draft
    It seems to be that this draft everyone seems to be all over the place, so trying to predict this year’s draft in particular is really tough. The best way to try to predict it is to combine the picks that fit in the system they run, with the idea of the ‘best player available’ mentality. However, there are some mock picks that make sense and some that dont fit. This is based off of neglecting all the obvious picks (ex: blake griffin at #1), and its not necessarily going through every pick, but the ones I strongly agree/disagree with:

    Accurate:
    1) James Harden at #3; it definitely fits and if people think the thunder are picking rubio, it wouldn’t make sense because they already have westbrook
    2) Jennings at #7; with his style of streetball, shoot first, no half court set plays type of offense is where jennings would excel at. Enter Golden State.
    3) Johnson at #14; reading about Amare picking every place he wants to play besides the Suns for when he enters free agency & with nash getting old, they could go either direction here. In my opinion, I figure it would be either clark or johnson, but since johnson is more polished at the PF and since clark will probably be used as a SF, Johnson would be better
    4) Demar at #9: It could really pay off for the raptors, and they do need some athleticism in there guard rotation

    Inaccurate:
    1)Curry at #6: I wouldn’t doubt that someone trades up to get this guy, but in the T’Wolves scheme I think they are so desperate in need of getting length and size in the middle. They need that more than they need Curry; I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade up to #2 or if they trade down in the middle of the first round to get either Mullens or a veteren.
    2) Maynor at #17: I think its between either him or Ty Lawson, and I think with there style of play it would make sense if Lawson was on that team instead of Maynor.
    3) Teague at #15: Why would Detroit pick another shoot-first point guard when they alredy have Stuckey and Bynum?
    4) Mullens at #16: The Bulls have enough big guys, they need someone to replace/insurance at small forward for Loul Deng, who seems to get injured every year. Someone like Clark would be perfect, or Austin Daye (who isn’t even on here, but I would assume someone will bite on him in the first round, thinking he is the next Anthony Randolph)
    5) Chase at #11: Way, way too high. Blair would be a better fit.
    6) Omri at #23: If for someone who is being compared to Andres Niconoi, why would they draft a player they already have?

    Overall, its fair to say that this draft, from the late lottery to the end of the first round, is the most unpredictable draft I have seen in a long time. Stocks may go up and down as the draft moves closer, but either way, its going to be a fun draft day.

    what exactly do you see in jru?..he dominated highschool as a shooting guard( remeber thats highschool)..as a shooting guard in college he was average…so why exactly should he be drafted that high?..cuz of hype…i bet if you never heard of him or any of these guys and just watched them for a season he wouldnt be thought of as a first round pick

    Why has Earl Clark dropped so far? Not that I’m a big fan, but I was surprised to see Mullens move ahead of him. If scouts are worried about his head derailing him, they should be even more worried about Mullens. What’s all this mention about teams making a mistake by passing up Deandre Jordan. What has he done so far? If the Bulls take Mullens at #16, I may quit watching them. What happened to Sam Young, he’s not even in the 1st round now?

    If Atlanta chooses that scrub aka Mark Madsen Jr. over his college point guard Ty Lawson or the once-thought-of-lottery-pick Earl Clark the Hawks really just need to hand over the decision making to any old joe-schmo because damn is it that hard to weed out the better players. SHELDON WILLIAMS NOW TYLER HANSBROUGH?? WTF

    Sorry, but when did the Grizzlies had a bad luck with spaniards? Pau Gasol was an all-star, Navarro made the rookie team and Marc Gasol is playing really well.
    If the Memphis has bad luck drafting Spanish guys, then Chris Wallace should forfeit the pick, cause when we drafted americans, we also haven´t won a title…

  14. BJ Mullens at #16 to the Bulls?
    Guys on this site are getting sick of me saying this but:

    2003 – Kirk Hinrich, Kansas (National Championship Game)
    2004 – Ben Gordon, UConn (National Championship)
    2004 – Luol Deng, Duke (Final Four)
    2004 – Chris Duhon, Duke (National Championship)
    2006 – Tyrus Thomas, LSU (Final Four)
    2007 – Joakim Noah, Florida (2 National Championships)
    2008 – Derrick Rose, Memphis (National Championship Game)

    Unless BJ Mullens just rips down rims, shatters backboards, and dominates any of the other bigs that the Bulls work him out against I don’t think that they would break their unbelievably consistent draft strategy of taking guys that excelled on successful teams. I don’t think the Bulls are title contenders now, not by a long shot, but bringing in a guy like Mullens whom is a project by the consensus of draftniks across the internet doesn’t seem to make sense. I assume that Mullens will look spectacular in his individual workouts. He has all the physical tools to be a dominant, low-post, back-to-the-basket center. But, even with the speedster Brad Miller on the roster to help him in a similar way he helped Noah and Thomas, I don’t see him EVER reaching his full potential. Of course, that being said, if the Bulls do draft him at #16 I should probably be excited. They must have seen something from him that would make them break their very consistent pattern. Although I disagreed with it at the time, I think that Wayne Ellington will be the guy for Chicago at #16.

  15. Pick by Pick
    #1 – Griffin Obvious.

    #2 – Thabeet makes the most sense for their roster unless they swap in the top 5 and try to get Jordan Hill

    #3 – Harden would be a GREAT GREAT pick giving them a versatile 4 out 1 in look just hope they get somebody with a pulse on the inside

    #4 – Rubio would be a solid pick but I also think neither him or the Kings would be excited about the present for him to come over this year and play on their sorry excuse for a team

    #5 – Hill is a good pick for the Wizards but as a Wizards fan I don’t see them being satisfied with just picking him I expect a trade from this spot and also I believe Hill may get grabbed earlier because he can help a couple teams that are higher than the 5 spot

    #6 – Curry AND THIS IS WHERE THE MOCK EXPLODES… this would be a bad pick for not one, or two, but three reasons 1) they have Randy Foye who does the same things offensively that Curry does except with more explosiveness, 2) he’s not a good defender, and 3) they could reach or trade down and take an upgraded version of the combo guard in Tyreke Evans and he would not only give them someone who likes to have the ball in his hands but also a bigger body at the combo that could crossguard the 2 position while Foye guards the 1

    #7 – Jennings would be a good pick if they didnt have Monta Ellis running the point already. If they wanted a potential pick they would be better off taking Derozan and letting him come off the bench with Anthony Randolph behind Maggette until he starts dunking on everybody and earns a starting spot

    #8 – Flynn at this spot is another pick that doesn’t make sense. Why take Flynn if your second best player plays the same position? Nate Rob may not be the best point guard but he definitely can’t guard a 2 guard and neither can Flynn so why not upgrade at an actual position of need and take Budinger or Derozan?

    #9 – Derozan would be a good fit here if he slid this far. If not they could try to upgrade that position with Budinger instead or go another route and get some inside toughness and a physical rebounding presence with Blair who could free up all their soft skill big men a little with him doing the dirty work

    #10 – Evans is an okay pick but I don’t see him really helping them out that much with his shoot first mentality. The best option for them is to probably try to package the pick with Jefferson and get an upgrade at the 4 and resign Sessions. That kid is raw.

    #11 – Budinger makes sense for the Nets. They also could get crafty and grab Blair or Johnson and unleash Yi and whichever forward together alongside Lopez. Just a thought though.

    #12 – Blair is not necessarily a bad pick. I have two issues with this slot however 1) you say the Bobcats would look for someone that was more NBA ready, and then you compare him to BJ Mullens… ANYONE sniffing the first round is more NBA ready than Mullens, thats just a bad comparison and 2) the Bobcats could pick him but all their big mean are already undersized so why would they pick another player that doesn’t really fill a need when they have Okafor who is basically the same player with a little less aggressive demeanor. Gerald Henderson would be a possible upgrade at the 2 or at least a solid rotation guy for them that could look to develop for the future.

    #13 – Henderson ok… not only do the Pacers have Danny Granger and Mike Dunleavy and Marquis Daniels, they drafted Brandon Rush last year to play early, and they run with a two point guard look at times with Jarrett Jack and T.J. Ford. When would he ever see the floor? Jeff Teague, Eric Maynor, or hell even the infamous Mullens would be a better pick here.

    #14 – Johnson good pick as he would provide a little added size to the small ball 4 position. Terrence Williams would also be an acceptable reach here or *GASP* Earl Clark?

    #15 – Teague another head scratcher. I don’t see why you would draft this guy for potential when you’ve already given your young point guard the team’s future. Earl Clark! or possibly Mullens would be a good pick as their bigs are getting old and on their way out.

    #16 – Mullens the almighty. can’t knock the pick because the bulls lack quality size. I can knock the probability of any playing time ahead of Noah and Miller and Thomas and Thomas…. picking Earl Clark would give them more talent, versatility, and playing time for their buck.

    #17 – Maynor is not a bad pick here. He would probably ride the pine for this team however as they already have Miller Williams and Green taking care of the point guard duties. Wayne Ellington or Terrence Williams would be a better fit for their team needs.

    #18 – Williams would be a good to great pick for the Minnesota Jeffersons. Picking Earl Clark or Ty Law would be just as good a decision.

    #19 – Hansbrough is not a pick that I would argue with, however they could help themselves more by picking up a wing player such as Ellington or once again I won’t even say it because you know he shouldnt fall this far. Josh Smith and Earl Clark could be the freak athlete version of Turkoglu Lewis at the 3/4. They could also grab Lawson to strengthen the second unit and be Bibby’s understudy.

    #20 – Ellington is a good fit for many teams before this pick because of his good shooting ability. Good to great shooters currently on the Utah Jazz: Kyle Korver, Morris Almond, C.J. Miles, Matt Harpring, not to mention the ones that don’t play THE SAME POSTITON like Mehmet Okur and Deron Williams. They’d be better off taking someone who has a different skill set such as Earl Clark or Jrue Holiday, who probably won’t last this long either.

    this is my 2009 nba mock draft:

    1 L.A Clippers: Blake Griffin
    2 Memphis: Hasheem Thabeet
    3 Oklahoma: Ricky Rubio
