mikeyvthedonParticipantIt is NCAA Football Bowl season, just wanted to do a straight up pick’em type game. That way it at the very least means you have a team to cheer for in all of these Bowl games, even the ones you do not really care about (which is probably, a majority of them).

mikeyvthedonParticipantWell, it is honestly better than what they had going on before. But, it is so nice to hear your opinion on this topic once more, Scarecrow. The one time I leave off the standard "I get it, the BCS is not as good as a play-off" message and we get this little nugget of wisdom. Thanks for the input, though. REALLY APPRECIATE IT BUD! 🙂

Dale WorthingtonParticipantMVtD, straight pick’em is kinda boring. Let’s go ATS aka Against The Spread.
True hustlaz.
Anyone can pick TCU over Louisiana Tech, Baylor over Washington, etc.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 12/11/2011 - 12:35pm #614175
mikeyvthedonParticipantIf you wanted me to write 35 different spreads, than you are truly overestimating how much I wanted to invest in this. Plus, the funny thing is, some of these teams do indeed lose. It happens. If you want to choose against the spread, go right ahead.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantbut we gotta get a better system in place…I love watching the Big Bowl games, but C’mon man, they can fix these issues if they want to, they just don’t want to fix them…I for one could less about the Famous Idaho Potatoe Bowl…seriously, who cares about the Beefy O’Brady Bowl…just give us a great Playoff system where the best of the best play it out…i for one would love see it before my grandchildren attend College…No offense to the post you made, It takes a lot to care about ALL of the Bowl games…
0 - Posted on: Sun, 12/11/2011 - 1:59pm #614218
mikeyvthedonParticipantI did have that line alluding to not caring about a vast majority of the Bowl games. I would say that I tend to watch them if there is nothing else on, but I tend to only care about watching few if any. Of course, the only team I am invested in is Oregon. If they were not in a major Bowl, my level of caring reaches new lows with each dropped level (about Bowls in general, not about the Ducks).
But, since they are going to the Rose Bowl, my level of care is pretty damn high. I love our coach, Chip Kelly and he has yet to get a Bowl W. Also, if you ever have a chance to go to a Bowl game, do it. This is going to be my fifth (fourth consecutive) and they have all been an absolute blast. The best one was the Fiesta Bowl 2002 in Tempe, just because of the way we won (handily beating a Colorado team that had thumped the team picked over us to go to the Championship that year in Nebraska), plus it was probably our best team ever assembled to that point. Last years was the craziest and the loudest I remember cheering at any game ever, plus it was right down to the wire. Still, Bowl games are a party, plain and simple.
Yes, a Play-off system would definitely make things seem much more legitimate. Plus, I believe it is insane that every 6-6 team from a major conference plays in a Bowl. If you go 6-6, most of the time you just wish your season would end. But, I think the play-off would have to not be too many games and that they more than likely would have to make it maybe deeper into January. It would be difficult to coordinate. It would be no more than 8 teams (honestly, anymore than that and you are grasping at straws) and I think 4 would more than likely be sufficient. Even than, we would never hear the end of the bitching from the 5th and 9th school. While a play-off would be better, Bowls will not be eliminated. Too much money and I think a lot of cities depend on the tourist dollars these things bring in, which are ridiculous.
So, I agree, there are too many Bowls and the BCS system can be terribly unsatisfying unless a perfect scenario of two undefeated teams happens (like last year), but even than you will probably hear b!tching about them not playing in the SEC or something (like we did last year, though even the Auburn fans said we were the best team they played all year, so, shove it SEC). But, I think a majority of the time since the BCS has been instituted, it has at the very least done a decent job of getting a solid championship match-up. There have been years of it being questionable (2003 with LSU/USC, 2004 with USC/Auburn both being undefeated, 2006 with Boise State finishing as the only undefeated team and Florida winning the title, 2007 with LSU winning but there being a bunch of 2 loss teams as well, 2008 Florida/Utah undefeated/USC), but, remember, before this, there was no system in place to determine a champion.
I would be happy with a 4 team play-off, but if you go too far beyond that, I have legitimate concerns for the players. If you have these kids playing 15 or 16 games, I think that is too much. Save that for when they are playing on Sunday. Football takes a lot of preparation and you need a lot more time between games than basketball. That is why a NCAA Football tournament would never be like a NCAA basketball tournament. It makes college basketball special and it helps it stand out. It is college basketballs cash cow. Football, on the other hand, could use a 4 team play-off, but to those who want to stretch it beyond that, I think it is too much. Nonetheless, if we got to see LSU vs. Stanford and Alabama vs. Oklahoma State, I would love that. But, for the time being, it ain’t happening. Hopefully it will, but why worry about something you have no control over.
Oregon has been "screwed over" by the BCS in that we missed a championship game in 2002 and we probably should have gone to a better bowl a few times, but this year, I love where we are. We are playing a tough team and both of us have incredibly exciting players. I do not know if we will win, I was confident in 2010 but than Terrelle Pryor went beast mode and killed us. Still, I at the very least feel we should put up a nice match-up. I will more than likely have an incredible time regardless chilling with my brother, friends and other fans at the game. Plus, last year was the first year I was really confident we could compete for a title. In 2002, that Miami team was INSANE. I feel they were basically a pro team at the college level. This year, as much as it would be cool to have another shot against LSU, that team is a monster as well. As boring as there game against Alabama was, Bama played them incredibly close and have an insane defense as well. Would have been cool to see how Oklahoma State played them, but I have a feeling the two best teams are playing in the title.

Dale WorthingtonParticipantYou’re right about that…there are some unexpected losses that go down.
It’s just that ATS requires more strategy and insight so I enjoy it quite a bit.

aamir543ParticipantToo lazy to do them all, so I’ll take LSU over Alabama by 4. The Tide will be driving in the red zone, and with four seconds left fromthe 23 yard line, the "Honey Badger" will knock downa a pass and then proceed to celebrate by……………….Tebowing.

Western Michigan (7-5) vs. Purdue (6-6)
Summary: The Boilermakers became bowl-eligible in the final week of the season with a win over Indiana. Their opponent, Western Michigan, has a passing offense ranked eighth in the nation, whereas Purdue has been more effective with the run game. Despite the better record, Western Michigan has not proven itself against tough competition, whereas Purdue has racked up wins over Ohio State and Illinois. Look for Purdue to take care of business against Western Michigan.

California has a much more balanced offense than Texas, who relies primarily on the run. Look for California to defend the run well and ride its momentum to a victory.

Florida State (8-4) vs. Notre Dame (9-4)
Summary: Both these teams started the season with BCS aspirations, but find themselves playing in the Champs Sports Bowl. The Irish had won four straight before losing an ugly one to Stanford, in which starting quarterback Tommy Rees was benched. Rees will start this game, but he will have a tough time against Florida State’s fourth-ranked scoring defense. Florida State will take down the boys from South Bend behind the play of its defense and quarterback E.J. Manuel.

Washington (7-5) vs. Baylor (9-3)
Summary: Baylor has the second-ranked offense in the nation and Washington has the 94th-ranked defense (out of 120). Baylor’s offense should be able to outpace Washington’s offense as Heisman Trophy Winner Robert Griffin III and an array of weapons earn the win, Baylor’s sixth straight, in a shootout.

Iowa (7-5) vs. Oklahoma (9-3)
Summary: Oklahoma began the season at the top of the polls, but its defense was not quite good enough to avoid losing three games, and so they find themselves playing Iowa. Iowa’s season has been very average. None of its wins were that impressive, but none of their losses were that embarrassing, either, and their statistics are all very mediocre. It’s hard to know what to expect out of either of these teams. Iowa only has one win away from their home stadium, and so I predict Oklahoma to win this one with their fourth-ranked passing offense.

Houston (12-1) vs. Penn State (9-3)
Summary: This is one of bowl season’s more intriguing matchups, and a number of storylines surround this game. Of course, the Penn State scandal has been well-documented, and Penn State will be playing in its first bowl game without Joe Paterno as head coach since 1962. But Houston is an interesting team, as well. Their coach, Kevin Sumlin, has been hired by Texas A&M for next season. Their quarterback, Case Keenum, is a statistical monster who has broken multiple NCAA records and who received a number of Heisman Trophy votes. But, despite an undefeated regular season, they were not chosen for a BCS bowl because of their weak schedule. Now, Houston’s first-ranked offense gets a chance to prove itself against a Big Ten defense. Houston is the nation’s best passing offense, but Penn State is fifth at stopping the pass. Few other combinations of teams would have produced such a contrast in styles. In a classic offense vs. defense matchup, I think Houston comes out on top.
Winner: Houston
Player to Watch: Houston QB Case Keenum

Outback Bowl
Michigan State (9-3) vs. Georgia (9-3)
Summary: Both teams come into this game after losing their respective conference championship games. The teams each have decent offenses, but it’s defense that has brought the teams to this point. Both defenses are in the top five in the nation in yards allowed. This game should be ugly, but it should also be close. Look for Georgia’s superior rushing offense to give it the slight edge.
Winner: Georgia
Player to Watch: Georgia LB Jarvis Jones
Watch-ability: 7
Capital One Bowl
Nebraska (9-3) vs. South Carolina (10-2)
Summary: This game is one of the biggest non-BCS bowls. Here we have another battle between a top SEC team and a top Big Ten team. Both of these teams rely heavily on the run, so this game may be devoid of big plays. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be a close contest, as these two teams are very evenly matched. But, statistically, South Carolina has the slight edge on offense and defense, and it has won seven of eight games since installing Connor Shaw as quarterback. Michigan State has not had good results playing on the road against good teams this season, so I think South Carolina comes out on top in this defensive battle.
Winner: South Carolina
Player to Watch: South Carolina DE Melvin Ingram
Watch-ability: 7
TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl
Ohio State (6-6) vs. Florida (6-6)
Summary: If someone had told me before the season that Florida and Ohio State would be playing each other, I would’ve thought they would be playing in a BCS Bowl, perhaps even in the National Championship. But these two under-performing squads find themselves in a rematch of the 2007 National Championship. They are evenly matched statistically, but Ohio State has been competitive in each of its losses, unlike Florida, which was overmatched in multiple games this year. An intriguing storyline that accompanies this game is Ohio State’s hiring of Urban Meyer as head coach for next season. Meyer was Florida’s coach for two national championships, including the 2007 victory against Ohio State. The prestige of these programs alone makes it worth watching, despite the mediocre records. I predict Ohio State takes the victory.
Winner: Ohio State
Player to Watch: Florida K Caleb Sturgis (Yes, I picked a kicker. In what is sure to be a competitive game, the outcome could rest on the leg of the All-American.)

Rose Bowl-BCS Bowl
Wisconsin (11-2) vs. Oregon (11-2)
Summary: If you tune into one game, other than the national championship, you should make it this one. It’s Midwest vs. West Coast. Smash-mouth, grind-it-out football vs. big-play, up-tempo football. Strength vs. speed. Perhaps I am oversimplifying it, but this is just a phenomenal matchup. The easy part is watching. The hard part is picking a winner. Each team won their conference’s first-ever championship game and look to ride that momentum to a victory in the prestigious Rose Bowl. Both teams have fantastic running backs, Wisconsin with Heisman finalist Montee Ball, and Oregon with the electrifying Lamichael James. The teams also have great quarterbacks, with Russell Wilson of Wisconsin and Darron Thomas of Oregon. What it comes down is this: Wisconsin’s defense is much better than Oregon’s, particularly against the run. Wisconsin will slow it down enough to catch Oregon off-balance and will come away with a thrilling victory.
Winner: Wisconsin
Player to Watch: Wisconsin RB Montee Ball/Oregon RB Lamichael James

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl-BCS Bowl
Stanford (11-1) vs. Oklahoma State (11-1)
Summary: Here is another top-tier matchup as these two national title contenders face each other in what is essentially a third-place game, as Oklahoma State is ranked #3 and Stanford is ranked #4. This should be a shootout as both teams are top five, nationally, in scoring. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is the consensus top NFL prospect, as well as the Heisman runner-up, but is he surrounded by a good enough team to defeat Oklahoma State? Oklahoma State got a decisive win over arch-rival Oklahoma in the final game of the season, and its only loss came in double-overtime. However, Stanford has the better defense, and I think that Andrew Luck, in what is likely his final college game, will step up and lead Stanford to the victory. This game will go to whichever team makes the fewest mistakes on offense and capitalizes on every drive.
Winner: Stanford
Player to Watch: Stanford QB Andrew Luck

Allstate Sugar Bowl-BCS Bowl
Michigan (10-2) vs. Virginia Tech (11-2)
Summary: The selection of Virginia Tech for a BCS bowl was roundly criticized after they were dominated by Clemson in the ACC championship. Virginia Tech never even beat a team that is currently in the Top 25. But now it gets to face Michigan and has the difficult task of containing dual-threat Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson. However, VT head coach Frank Beamer is known for defense and he will have a plan for slowing Robinson down. Michigan is the team that has more to be worried about, as they are 2-2 on the road this year. Without a decisive road victory, it makes me wonder whether or not it can put together a decent performance. Michigan has an above-average run defense, but it may not be good enough to stop Virginia Tech’s fantastic running back, David Wilson. In the end, Michigan will have enough big plays against Virginia Tech’s solid defense to win.
Winner: Michigan
Player to Watch: Michigan QB Denard Robinson

Discover Orange Bowl-BCS Bowl
West Virginia (9-3) vs. Clemson (10-3)
Summary: Both of these teams are good, but these teams each earned BCS spots only because of their conference titles, making this perhaps the least interesting BCS bowl. But still, that’s like saying it’s the worst type of pie. Pie is still pie, and in the same way, this game is still certainly worth watching. Both these teams rely on the passing game, and neither is great at stopping it, so this game should be exciting. Neither of these teams looked that strong in the second half of the season, but Clemson came out and dominated Florida State in the ACC championship, giving them momentum for this game. Clemson also has a superior run game with running back Andre Ellington, so I think Clemson wins this game by a comfortable margin.
Winner: Clemson
Player to Watch: Clemson WR Sammy Watkins

AT&T Cotton Bowl
Kansas State (10-2) vs. Arkansas (10-2)
Summary: Each of these teams come in to this game after having impressive regular seasons. All four of these teams’ losses were against top ten teams. This game should be another offensive explosion. Kansas St., which relies on the rushing game, led by athletic quarterback Collin Klein, goes up against a below-average Arkansas rushing defense (74th out of 120 teams). Arkansas, on the other hand, has a fantastic passing offense behind quarterback Tyler Wilson and faces Kansas State’s 104th-ranked pass defense. These teams won’t be able to get many stops, but Arkansas should come out on top. Its only losses came against the two teams playing for the National Championship, LSU and Alabama. Arkansas also has the better overall defense and has more offensive balance. With three wins over ranked teams, Arkansas will win this one.

Allstate BCS Championship Game
LSU (13-0) vs. Alabama (11-1)
Summary: At last, after more than three weeks of bowl games, the Big One is here. Hopefully it will exceed expectations. After these teams met for a 9-6 LSU overtime victory in November in a game that only a defensive purist or an LSU fan could enjoy, many fans were opposed to a rematch. But these teams’ undisputable talent earned them each a spot in the championship. This game could turn into another ugly contest as each team is exceptional against the run, and it’s the run that each team relies on offensively. In the end, I believe LSU comes out on top because of their quarterback tandem of seniors Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson. Alabama has a freshman quarterback, AJ McCarron, and, though he has done well so far, LSU’s defense could force him into costly mistakes that prove to be the difference maker. LSU wins their fourth national championship in a tight one.
Winner: LSU
Player to Watch: Alabama RB Trent Richardson/ LSU CB/PR Tyrann Mathieu (Impossible to choose between these two Heisman finalists. Both could have a big game.)

mikeyvthedonParticipantHave to give you credit, it is not that bad a little article. One thing I will say is, our defense gave up 3.6 yards per carry and Wisconsin gave up 3.9. They may be better at defending the run, but I do not think they are that much better. One thing I think they do have an advantage in is O-Line. That is what scares me about playing them. I am worried their offensive line may still be on a different level than ours. I think we have more talent just about every where other than on the offensive front. Will be an interesting match-up though, very excited to be going and will be hoping that you are wrong. GO DUCKS!

Dale WorthingtonParticipantPush = 0 gain, 0 loss. You get your money back.
Michigan really underperformed and Denard the Tard better learn how to throw the ball this offseason. Junior "Ernest" Hemingway really bailed him out. I did not have any moneh on Oregon-Wisco fortunately.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 01/05/2012 - 4:46pm #621935
mikeyvthedonParticipantHe is an incredibly talented player, enough so that Michigan would rather have the ball in his hands every play rather than use anyone else they have at QB. Still, I see little reason to believe he is a QB at the next level. The guy is a fantastic runner, but he is not an elite QB.
People who compare him to Michael Vick are delusional. At best, he is Antwaan Randle-El, who I feel was an even better college QB. Not to mention, where does he play in the NFL?
0 - Posted on: Thu, 01/05/2012 - 6:58pm #622021
Dale WorthingtonParticipantDenard looks more like an RB to me but the problem is that he actually regressed as a runner (in addition to a passer) this year and he’s too injury prone (although his injuries tend to sideline him for a few plays tops…it still doesn’t bode well for the future).
If Denard can iron out his accuracy and decision-making then Go Blue can be amazing next season in Year 2 of the Hoke/Mattison/Borges era.
The only problem is that their schedule is absolutely brutal: Alabama in Jerryworld, @ Notre Shame, @ Ohio State, and @ Nebraska.
All 4 of those teams could be top 10 squads next year.
