stifler101ParticipantABC’s really dumb thinking Mike Breen, Mark Jackson, and Jeff Van Gundy are "star" announcers. They all suck. Every year I pray Van Gundy gets back into coaching so he can do what he does best, because commentating isn’t it. All three of them talk about anything but the damn game they’re suppose to be talking about. It just sucks because they get every big game that I definitely must see. It often gets so bad I have to mute the TV and just watch in silence.
TNT by far has the best announcers. Kevin Harlan, Marv Albert, Mike Fratello, Steve Kerr (and Doug Collins, one of my all-time favorites, when he wasn’t coaching) are all superb. I do find Reggie and Cheryl Miller annoying though. ESPN has the beautiful bball mind that is Hubie Brown, and I like Dan Shulman as a play-by-play guy, too. But ESPN’s excuse of a halftime crew is awful with Stuart Scott and Mike Wilbon. Magic Johnson and Jon Barry are okay, but TNT’s Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson, and even Chris Webber take the cake.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI personally am incredibly hard on commentators, mainly because I hate most of them. I appreciate it is a difficult occupation, but I feel there are so many terrible basketball commentators right now. Time after time, I think of muting games. However, I will name some I personally can not stand.
Mark Jackson: He says some of the dumbest things known to man, and gets in so many incredibly boring arguments with Van Gundy.
Reggie Miller: Did he get his degree from UCLA? He is so lucky he could shoot the basketball and was 6’7. Cheryl is bad, but at least she does not commentate full games. This guys grammar is so poor, he might have been a speech writer for George W. Bush. Makes up words, and has caused me to lose numerous brain cells from slapping my head at his stupidity.
Dick Vitale: Like many, I used to think he was kind of fun and his enthusiasm for college basketball almost made you think he knew something about it. But, as I grew older, I realized he was a stark raving moron who knew very little about what he was talking about other than looking at HS rankings and yelling his brains out.
However, name most announcers and the odds are I hate their guts. It is personal opinion people, not everyone thinks "Hand down, man down…" is Shakespearean, many think "This is the best he could come up with?" Not to mention, the guy had his hands stuck to his sides when he played. I do like TNT’s crew in the studio, and I think Chris Webber was a great addition actually. I never really liked him as a player (great player, just never was a fan of his, you know the deal), but he is articulate and he has some nice analysis. Ernie Johnson is a great moderator, Charles can be a moron, but tends to be funny and sometimes kicks knowledge. Plus, he is not afraid to make a stand. Kenny Smith I am indifferent to, I honestly think he could be replaced pretty easily. He should never judge a dunk contest.
ESPN is horrible at doing basketball. Their commentators are incredibly obnoxious, and they have so little to give in their studio time. Honestly, when "The Decision" came on, and I saw Stu, John Barry, Wilbon or whoever the hell else was there, that was even more disappointing than LeBron and Jim Grey’s huge embarassing failure. Mike Wilbon, as much as I liked watching PTI, should not talk about sports or basketball. These guys are journalists, they can be funny, they have covered a lot of sports, but they are pretty damn bad at analysis. Also, I think Jay Bilas is a robot, though he is actually one of the better ones ESPN has. If ESPN/ABC could fire most of their basketball analysis team and totally re-do their premise, I think it make things incredibly more enjoyable. That first NBA finals with Van Gundy, Jackson and Breen (Who is actually good at play by play, but gets sunk into the prior two’s oblivion), was just such a downer. Weak stuff ESPN, "You are better than that" (smacks head over embarassing idiotic statement).

McDunkinDick Vitale.
When i first started watching college ball i liked him, but for years he has been a living "off-topic forum" He cant talk about the game longer than 3 minutes without going on a rant about the most random things.
I used to not like Jason Williams when he started doing All American games but he has gotten much better

RUDEBOY_ParticipantJackson & Van Gundy are a bad together..They need to be separated right away…They do make some valid points sometimes and give inside tidbits…Jackson has the comments leading into commercial breaks…But the boring banter they do among themselves can be pointless…And only makes sense to them..
I hated Doris Burke at 1st becuz i wasnt use to a woman doing the game…But she knows the game..
I hate that Doug Collins is coaching now, becuz he was a great commentator…I hope they show more of Hubie Brown…
I grew up listening to Gary Bender,he was great…

mgreener_34Participant"honest question, do celtics fans like tommy heinsohn?"
To be honest if your a Celtics fan then the stuff he says doesn’t really annoy you. Complaining about the refs or bad calls is what most fans do anyways. Plus he actually knows what he talks about, and has alot of nice stories to tell.

WizardofOzParticipantI basically agree with everything mikeyvtthedon said, but let me give my analysis.
Guys I Hate
Tommy Heinsohn: I know he works for a local station and that local commentators have to be baised to an extent, but this guy is RIDICULOUS! He complains about EVERYTHING that doesn’t go the Celtics way and yells at EVERY call that’s called against them. If you’re not a Celtics fan, he makes watcing a Celtics game REALLY unenjoyable and makes you want to pul your hair out.
Dick Vitale: I used to really like him, but now I realize that all he does is yell to get everybody hyped up and gives little to no analysis on the game or players.
Mike Wilbon: Everything Mikeyvthedon said.
Bob Knight: He officially got on my list after the KU-Baylor game. Let me list some of the quotes from the game. "I wouldn’t draft Perry Jones in the first round." "I would take the Morris twins because they can play guard." "LaceDarius Dunn is the best NBA prospect out here." He mentioned this on two separate occasions. That, in a nut shell, is why Bob Knight failed as a coach the last 13 years of his career. If you can’t evaluate talent, you have no chance.
Brent Barry: His voice is so monotonous. He makes you fall asleep when he talks. His brother is better.
Eric Snow: OH GOD! WHERE DO I BEGIN? This guy was awful on NBATv. He always stuttered when he talked. I’m SO glad he’s not on NBATv anymore and Philadelphia fans have to suffer through him during games now.
NBATv as a whole was TERRIBLE last season. Apart of that is because there stuff isn’t palnned like ESPN which causes long periods of pauses and people to stutter, which jus makes me very uncomfortable as a watcher. The additions of Kevin McHale and Chris Webber made it much better though. When Chris Webber first came in, he was kind of goofy, but he’s grown on me ever since. Steve Smith & Dennis Scott are pretty good too, and I really like Rick Kamla.
I really enjoy TNT’s coverage. I like there Half Time crew and play-by-play & color commentators. Marv Albert is the BEST commetator EVER, Kevin Harlen is great, Steve Kerr is great, Mike Fratello is great, and Doug Collins was great. Cheryl and Reggie Miller are annoying though. And TNT’s coverage of the NBA Draft was much better then ESPN’s. I still don’t know why ESPN covers it now.
I like Gus Johnson a lot too as a college basketbball analyst. He covers the NFL too, but I like him much better as a basketball commetator because there’s action going on all the time in basketball, unlike the NFL, where there are constant pauses, and I think that Gus fits best in basketball.

LAKE SHOWLove Dick Vitale..lol…when he was the speaker before we played at Allstar he had me hyped up.. he would be a great motivational speaker because he knows how to pump you up even if your not that good
0 - Posted on: Sat, 01/22/2011 - 9:47am #477642
mikeyvthedonParticipantHe was so bad, I was embarrassed for him. See, what I do not understand, is that they love putting these guys on television who were trash talkers on the court. They love talking, but they have no idea how to impart knowledge on basketball and have terrible grammar. I mean, they should honestly take classes and look into commentating before doing it, Shaq did. He was really bad when he filled in one time on TNT, but at least he goes out and tries to get better. Payton was so bad, it just killed the show. He looked like a total idiot.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 01/22/2011 - 10:05am #477644
andxxxParticipantSpeaking of someone who improved their speaking skills in front of a camera. Magic Johnson has improved immensely since the first time he tried commentating compared to how he is now.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 01/22/2011 - 10:10am #477646
The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantThey need to find and hire the people that actually go to school for communications…there are plenty of normal people that can do the job better than these so called stars…I’d love to see a guy named Dan from Denver commentate a few few nuggets games…it be a nice thing to do as a franchise, to let fans become part of the games…announce players, lineup, halftime acts,in game analysis…I think the current nba model is boring and the league needs a shot in the ol ass…
0 - Posted on: Sat, 01/22/2011 - 10:13am #477648
LAKE SHOWThey do. Its called Communications. that was my major Communications/broadcasting. Alot of atheletes take that because they wanna go into Announcing afterwards
0 - Posted on: Sat, 01/22/2011 - 10:27am #477652
mikeyvthedonParticipantThey should take a course on grammar. Because, that is usually the biggest issue.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 01/22/2011 - 10:54am #477664
The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantAny body can see that not only do they suck at their jobs as broadcasters they also fail in entertaining us minus a Barkley rant here and their…Dick Vitale sucks so bad, he’s the most biased Duke fan ever…get over it college fans, I mean c’mon baby….
