OrangeJuiceJonesParticipantI think Candace Parker is out for the rest of the year with an injury. Don’t ask me anything else about the WNBA. My knowledge of that league has been exhausted.

WizardofOzParticipantI don’t follow the WNBA, but I know that the Mystics are the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. I’m going to root for my local team.

ghettosermonParticipantI’m not gonna front and degrade women’s basketball and act like I don’t follow the WNBA, I am actually a Mystics season ticket holder and go to most of the home games with my girlfriend and niece. I also coach Freshman girls basketball.
Basically this year it’s the Storm’s to lose. IMO if they lose it will be an enormous upset. They basically dominated the entire season. Sue Bird is the best or at least smartest and skilled PG in the league, and Lauren Jackson is the best player in the league flat out. It’s like having a prime Steve Nash and Kevin Garnett playing together, they are that dynamic of a duo. With Swin Cash they have the best trio in the WNBA. Camille Little and and Tanisha Wright are also 2 extremely underrated players. They should handle the Spark pretty easily. Actually if Candace weren’t out I’d say the Spark would beat them with Ticha, Tina Thompson, and Delisha Milton Jones. Still though since that’s not the case it’s impossible to go against the Storm although at times this decade they have grossly underachieved in the playoffs and it wouldn’t shock me to see the Sparks steal it from them. Remember only 4 teams make it from each conference so all of the teams in are good. The Mercury is really the only team I can see seriously challenging the Storm. At the time I thought it was stupid to trade Cappie Pondexter for Candice Dupree. That would be like trading Dwade for Gerald Wallace. Dupree is a nice long and athletic defender and perennial allstar reserve but Pondexter is a freakish scorer. Even though they have struggled gelling I think that in the long run the Mercury can be competitive. Trading Pondexter has truly opened the way for Diana Taurasi to be the #1 scorer. The front court of Dupree, Penny Taylor, and Tangela Smith is one of the most versatile. Taylor really stretches the floor out. Their potential series with the Storm will be dependent on Temeka Johnson’s ability to keep up with Sue Bird. Don’t sleep on the Silverstars though. Any front line with Sophia Young and Michelle Snow is a contender but beyond Becky Hammon who I don’t believe to be an elite big game player, their guard play is poor.
On the Eastern Conference side I don’t see any serious contenders. The Mystics despite being the #1 seed are not nearly the most talented team in the conference. It’s amazing the tear they went on to finish the season. They have a good team but not a great team. Not surprising they lost game one and could lose the series. As great and underrated Crystal Langhorne is even back to her Maryland days her lack of size hurts her against elite bigs. Harding is a great PG and Monique Curry is one of the most versatile players in the game. They just don’t have the fire power though, Katie Smith has played admirable minutes this year but she simply can’t score like she used to. If Alanna Beard wasn’t out this might be a different story. Angel McCoutry is the difference in this series as she has the star power. However if Marissa Coleman continues to play great in a support role the Mystics could bounce back. It’s sad tonight’s game gave me a reminder of the Caps being ousted in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs despite dominating the regular season. Neither the Fever or Liberty have a chance at the title IMO although any team with Cappie Pondexter or Katie Douglas and Tameka Catchings has a chance. Their front lines are relatively weak though. There’s my little analysis of the WNBA playoffs although I highly doubt many people here care. I will say though as a fan of basketball if you really watch and learn the game closely it is entertaining to watch and a nice way to feed my basketball hunger when the NBA is not in session. Yes you have to get past the physical limitations and it not looking like what we are used to, but if you truly appreciate basketball you will appreciate the WNBA. Because very few players are physically dominant like in the NBA a lot of success is predicated on efficient offensive sets and team defense. It’s also nice that each player really has a defined role and knows what they are doing. The shooters know who they are, the scrappers know who they are. I’m sure I’ll lose cool points for this though, lol, but I do follow the WNBA so shoot me.
