I don’t really understand why this site is so down on Cauley Stein, simply because he isn’t good on offense. In a league where guys like Deandre Jordan and Tyson Chandler are some of the better big men in the league, why is WSC not being able to post up such a huge negative? In a league where outside shooting and pick’n’roll dives to the rim are most teams bread and butter, why does WSC’s lack of a post up game make him not worthy of a lottery pick?

The recently posted Top 5 Overrated article said that his lack of offensive game would mean that he wouldn’t be enough of a difference maker to be worth a top ten pick. To that I say did you watch Nerlens Noel play at all last year? Have you watched any of Deandre Jordan? Have you watched any of Tyson Chandler? How often do their respective teams pound the ball into them in the post and expect them to do anything but a hook shot or just make a read and pass it? There are virtually no possessions where DJ gets the ball in the post and is asked to get a bucket. Its all dives to the rim for oops and finishes off missed buckets. Heck, just look at Tristan Thompson. The only post move he has is a jump hook with either hand, but he still managed to go off these playoffs.

All of this is to say, why is a guy who has limitless potential on D not worthy of a top 10 pick simply because he doesnt have a great offensive game? How many teams are pounding the ball into their bigs in the post and expecting them to get a bucket? This league is a pick and roll league and WCS was easily the best PnR defender in College basketball this past season, and has the athletic ability to be able to dive to the rim for oops on offense. It may take a couple seasons before he adjusts to NBA tempo and making reads off of pick and rolls, but there no doubt in my mind that he can be at least a Deandre Jordan/Tyson Chandler-esque player, and is certainly worthy of a top 10 pick- whether or not he is a fit for any team in the top 10 outside of Sacramento is a different story, but to say he isn’t worthy seems awfully silly to me.

Here is one link, but I think the health issue particularly his foot has teams concerned not his basketball ability.

I read that in terms of Indiana they are very concerned and likely to pass on him, I will try find the link for that as well.

Yeah, Chad Ford was on the Zach Lowe podcast and said that in the next couple of years, he’ll inevitably have to have surgery to clean up some of the pins inserted into his foot from his 2014 NCAA Tournament injury since it hasn’t healed all the way and it’ll take 4-6 months to recover and that’s if he doesn’t cause further more injury to it down the road. So I don’t know if GMs want him to miss the entire summer right now to get the surgery and thus are afraid that he’ll be not ready at the start of the season or during it because of the surgery, or are scared to wait until after his rookie season so he can get the surgery and hope he doesn’t re-injure it in-between then, or are just scare of foot injuries in general.

Fair enough, those are completely legitimate concerns if he does indeed have these foot issues. I was more baffled by articles like the one I mentioned disregarding him on the basis that he doesn’t have an offensive game, but if he has injury concerns that is definitely good grounds to pass on him.

Find me a 7’1” + center WITHOUT a foot issue.

Not that good of a rebounder, but his athleticism is off the charts. Definitely a top 10 pick.

I’d pick him top 6 if I was a GM, his ability to switch on absolutely anyone is gonna be huge with the way the NBA is moving.
