This is his 3rd season in the league and after showing progression from his rookie season he has remained stagnant this season. He is only 22 and has shown flashes in a couple of games but overall he has been very inefficient.

I know that a lot of people hate Rivers and probably even more so now that he is coached by his father.

Will Austin Rivers ever be anything more than a spark plug off the bench? Based on what I am seeing I find it hard to see him as anything more than a bench player. Coming into the season I thought he might improve as he did his sophomore season but that is not the case.

I don’t think he’ll be anything more than a bench player. But I also think it’s hard for him to get consistent time and shots behind Paul, Redick, and Crawford. I do think that Rivers has an opportunity and ability to be a consistent 6th man of the year candidate. Playing under a guy like Crawford who is one of the best 6th men of all time could be extremely beneficial. I’m not saying they’re the same player, but they both depend a lot on their ball handling and quickness to get their shot. If Crawford can teach him the mentality of a 6th man, he has a future in the league.

He penetrates and brakes down the D. He cant finish at the hoop and that kills him. I think he needs to get a lot of minutes at some point. He has looked good to me this year. Minutes are not there. He needs to become a high 30’s percentage 3 point shooter and continue to find others when he penetrates. Developing a floater would help. I think he can still be a pretty good player. When i have watched him this year he brakes down the d easy.

i really do think so.  i think if you put him on the 76ers or lakers, we’d be having a much different conversation.  his career has been mismanaged by coaches that think that he can be a pg.  the kid is a scorer.  he’s spent his whole life carrying teams with his ability to score in volumes.

He does indeed break down the D ( at will sometimes ) BUT CAN NOT FINISH.  Just look at the finishes by Irving or Lillard, then look at Rivers.  Totally different levels of talent.

Biggest problem is his horrific shooting.  A 6-4 guard in the league has no business shooting 62% from the stripe for his career.  Some guards just never figure out how to shoot and he might be one of them.  His form really bothers me.

He’s an undersized two guard who struggles to finish or shoot…not good for a volume scorer. Never saw the hype.

It’s harsh but he’s barely NBA caliber.

He can’t finish, he can’t shoot, he’s got a great dribble drive repertoire and has a mean crossover but it means nothing because he can’t do anything after he breaks his man down

Put him on the sixers and we would be saying different things. Kid has been mismanaged for sure. He cant get the minutes behind Paul. He needs to be allowed to play through mistakes and have bad games and still get minutes. He is young and the kid has scored over 20 before so barely a NBA player is absurd.

I agree that playing for a team like the 76ers could have been beneficial to his career, but at the same time I don’t.  I honestly think he couldn’t have been out in a better situation. After Rivers rookie year in the pelicans some people were saying he was the worst player in the league… Imagine if he would have gone to a bad team like the 76ers and still didn’t produce, no one would want to pick him up and he’d probably be on a trip to Europe.

Being on the Clippers with his dad might have saved his career. He’s still the age of a senior, and he’s actually getting minutes on a playoff team. That means he can learn how to play winning basketball and do the little things right that leads to winning, unlike he would have for a bad team. Plus it’s probably better for him to be around guys like Redick and Crawford to help him with his shot. No one on the 76ers can do that.

As for Rivers I’d say in a couple years he’ll probably your typical 6th man Jason Terry/Crawford like scorer off the bench. Definitely can get to the basket, which is very valuable thing in the NBA for creating offense. Just needs to figure out how to put the ball in the basket. The real question is how the Doc let his shooting form get so bad?

There was a video circulating last summer about how hard he was training. When you saw how lose his handle was compared to the guy coaching him, you knew he was in trouble. He is a player in the league. He just isn’t going to be a special player.

Sort of reminds me of Luther Head or Jerryd Bayless. Only difference is Head was more of a finished from the perimeter and less ball dominant and Bayless albiet struggling from the outside was more athletic and a better finisher. So much talent just limited explosion on jump shots to hit constested shots and no athletisism or strength finishing.

He’s GOT to develop as a finisher or develop into a D-and-3 guy, otherwise no team in the league could use him. That’s the reality… 6′ to 6’4 dribblers are a dime a dozen.

Players like this are exactly why I’m in favor of players staying 2 years in college. Rivers was great as a freshman, but still a one trick poney but in college it’s easier to get by with one skill. Just look all over college hoops, players improve leaps and bounds after just a year.

I could see him stick in the league for a while as a cheap role player. Won’t be anything special, but not that horrible.
