Why Tyler Smith threw his college career away

For the first time since the New Year's Day arrest that altered the course of his career and threatened to derail Tennessee's season, Tyler Smith offered an explanation on why he had an unregistered pistol in the car he was driving.

Smith told the Nashville Tennesseean he bought the gun because someone had robbed his off-campus apartment and threatened via text message to kill him and his 3-year-old son. He still will not report the threats to the police nor will he name the "two or three guys" he suspects were out to get him, but he apparently felt it would improve his tarnished public image if he revealed more details of what led to his arrest.

"Once they texted me and put my son into it, it was a whole different story," Smith said. "I don't want to say that I needed the pistol, but I felt like it was better for me to have something. I wasn't going anywhere to start anything. I just didn't want to be
in a situation where I was running away from something with no protection."

The explanation from Smith gives more closure to an incident that spelled the end of his promising college career. He and Tennessee teammates Melvin Goins, Brian Williams and Cameron Tatum got pulled over in Knoxville for speeding on the afternoon of Jan. 1. The officer smelled marijuana in the vehicle and after further investigation discovered two guns, a bag of weed and a container of alcohol.

Dismissed from the team as a result of his arrest, Smith signed a two-year contract to play professionally in Turkey and had to watch from afar as Tennessee made a surprising run to within a victory of the Final Four without him. He excelled on the court in Turkey but stayed in close contact with his teammates in Knoxville, admitting it was "so hard" not being part of the NCAA tournament run.

If Smith could rewind his life six months, he would do a handful of things differently. He wouldn't have had marijuana or alcohol in the car, he would have purchased the gun legally, and he wouldn't have allowed his teammates to get in the vehicle without telling them about the gun.

"That was the wrong decision," Smith said. "I put them in a bad spot. If I told them I put the gun in the car, they probably wouldn't have gotten in that car."

There's no way to verify Smith's version of what led to his arrest, but to his credit, he's repeatedly expressed remorse and taken responsibility for his mistakes.

Smith intends to finish his degree at Knoxville and continue pursuing pro basketball. Hopefully his story has a happy ending.

I question the legitimacy of this story (not as much as the Delonte and LeBron's mom though). If it is true, then I feel sorry for him, and I hope that he can turn his life around and play in the NBA some day. It's amazing that a guy could go from potential first-round pick to probably un-drafted in just a few months, especially since injuries weren't a factor in his downfall.

He should have entered the

He should have entered the draft after his first season (Sophomore year) at UT. His stock seemed to decline a bit after each year.

Hey, I believe him. No way

Hey, I believe him. No way would he lie and place blame on something like that, and then throw his child in it to make it better. I believe he's telling the truth. Him having drugs and alcohol was wrong and was the reason he go kicked out for the most part, but I 100% believe that man is telling the truth about WHY he got those guns.

If the story were true, Tyler

If the story were true, Tyler would name names. I got an unregistered gun to protect myself and potentially my son. Were the text messages verified to include any mention of his son... This sounds made up to spin the story into a sad one and cover his own A$$. He won`t name names either. Basically there is no way to possibly verify that anything he is saying is true. I think its more likely he thought it would be cool to be all gangster and carry one around. No doubt he realized it was a mistake and that the stuff he was doing was just plain stupid. Im sure he`s learned and grown from it all and I hope things work out for him in the future. He`ll definitly be alot more humble then a guy like Cousins will be any time soon.

I have a hard time believing

I have a hard time believing he'd bring his son into something to cover that up. Why would he bring him up if he didn't have anything to do with it? He's already got kicked out of school and in trouble with the law, so why would he bring his own son into something that would have little to no benefit for him (other than to feel regret from people he doesn't even know)? Doesn't make sense to lie about it. I think he just doesn't want to tell because he'd be considered a snitch (something I don't agree with, but happens all the time).

I believe it could be real.

I believe it could be real. Look at what happen to Jennifer Hudson family and Eddy Curry ex girl and his daughter. Even if the police had suspects i mean without legit proof they couldnt do anything. Tyler said he knew but more than likely he has no proof. Also look at what happened to Dexter Pittman's brother right around the time before the draft. People these things may not be related but it is weird though how Pittman brother is killed right before he has a chance to make a come up. You have Jealous people they will do stuff like this just to keep you from coming up because they cant come up. This may have happened over a girl or something. Girls like dudes that are bout to get paid and other dudes get jealous.

Snitch on what... there is no

Snitch on what... there is no proof the 2-3 guys involved in the story did anything wrong but utter threats that can`t be verified in court anyways. If they even exist at all. There`s nothing to fear on their part. Worst case they get their names in a file somewhere.

The reasons he PROBABLY

The reasons he PROBABLY didn't tell were because:

1. He only had an idea of who it was, and didn't want to involve parties who weren't involved
2. Because he didn't want to "snitch" on the poeple for whatever reason.

Yeah, you never say names

Yeah, you never say names unless you're 100% sure on it. No one would want to be wrongfully accused of something and have to go through that type of emotional toll. I don't know how much of this story I believe and how much I don't. I do respect his sincerity though. The best we can hope for is that he continues to grow and mature as a person, and one day he will maybe play in the NBA.

On the gun situation I will say this. If anyone ever threatened to kill my son or daughter, and I lived in a state where I could register myself legally for a gun then I am purchasing one. No one thing is above family, it's that simple. Though, if my state did not allow people to register guns legally, I would just have another type of weapon nearby just in case. Of course I would report this to the police immediately as well.

butidonthavemoney and a few

butidonthavemoney and a few other posters have the same exact problem, which they expressed previously. It might be a while before everything is back to normal, seeing as how we've had a lot of problems since the new server came.
