Mr.Knick 32ParticipantI don’t understand it.
Why do people hate Duke? It doesn’t make sense. They get to the tournament every year, they pull in some recruits every year. To me? They have the best coach in the NCAA’s. I don’t understand- Why? Why is there almost a mass hatred for a school who actually does well. To be honest- I think some people don’t like the fact they succeed with predominant white starters.
Be honest, if you hate Duke- I would like to know why.

knicksfan7ParticipantSame reason why people hate the Yankees, they walk around with that swagger.
Shane Battier, Carlos Boozer, Jay Williams, Grant Hill, Gerald Henderson, all black yeah they had some very good white players, but that has nothing to do with it.

midwestbbscoutParticipantwhen people treat Coackh K like Knute Rockne because he won the gold….all coaches who lose the gold with the US they should kill them like a Columbian soccer player….

midwestbbscoutParticipantJon Scheyer is bad and Nolan Smith is pretty good too…..but the rest of their team blows…..Singler, Zoubek, the Plumlees….they all suck….all sooooo overrated….whether it be as college players or prospects….Dawkins is pretty good too…..

MkadozaParticipantBecause Duke represents the Elitists in America. The wealthy, private school, upper 2% of the population. Even when Elton, when he left early to capitalize on his PotY to be the #1 draft pick, a lot of students sent him hate mail for it. They have a ton of bandwagon fans, and their individual talent is often overrated. I think that covers it.

LeroyJenkinsParticipantdick vitale, the refs of almost every duke game, the overating of all duke prospects, the mainly white roster they have every year, and they never have a single good looking female in the home crowd..that includes cheerleaders too.

kingoftheplaygroundParticipanti think the media attention duke gets is what makes people hate them. they get all the praise in the world for doing something that other teams have done before. coach k is a great coach but so is tom izzo, roy williams, bill self, jim boeheim and others. its seems like even when they play teams that are ranked higher than them the media still looks at it like duke lost to themselves rather than the other team just beating them fair and square

SwatLakeCityParticipantI love their coach, but they always seem to win. I know they are a great team, and they are always favored to win, but sometimes you just love going for the underdog. They will lose tonight against Baylor. Epke Udoh will give them problems. And midwestbbscout-How can you say that Singler, Zoubeck and the Plumlee brothers all suck. Zoubeck gets all of those rebounds, which are pretty important in any game. He probably will not make the pros, but that doesn’t mean he’s not good. Jacob Pullen out of Kstate will not make the pros but he’s good. Is he not? Hes one of the best guards this tourney has got. And Singler with all those 3’s and the good sound defense. Why you hating the three’s from Singler. He will definitly make the pros. If you wanna tell me that someone sucks say Sheyer. All he can do is shoot. I haven’t seen the Plumlee brothers play so I won’t say much about them, but I’m sure they can’t be that bad.
Anyway that is my reason, some people just love rooting for the underdog, which is never Duke.0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 5:12am #271610
BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantI actually don’t usually dislike Duke’s players. Greg Paulus was the great exception, but I don’t dislike talented players just because of the name on the front of the jersey. I do tend to dislike coaches who can only win with superior talent, and Mike Krzyzewski is up there with Calipari to top that list now. Nothing was more telling than the fact that armed with Wade, LeBron, Melo, Paul, Bosh, and Howard his team USA squad in 2006 at the World Championships and finished third. He couldn’t win with clearly the best six players in the tournament. It wasn’t until they added Kobe was he able to “lead” the team to victory. That was really the tipping point for Krzyewski with me. The international competitions are really an assessment of the NBA, and Team USA has had its most talented stars get coached by a guy who hasn’t done anything during a game other than curse at refs in a decade. It really bothers me that both K and Cal are really bad in-game coaches right now, and nobody really points that out. I don’t think either of those two are in the same league as a coach as Tom Izzo, Bo Ryan, or Jamie Dixon. Those two hand pick any four of the best high school players they want each and every year. They should #1 seeds, and they should be in the Final Four. I also get slightly fed up with the supposed high character BS with Mike Krzyzewski. It isn’t as bad as with Calipari and Pitino, but it is close. Did Quinn Snyder and Jeff Capel learn to cheat after they left Duke? Nobody investigated Chris Duhon’s mother and Carlos Boozer’s parents from getting a jobs in Durham with high salaries from Duke boosters like the NCAA did Renardo Sidney. I hated the fact that Duke’s students had a single bad word about Elton Brand, William Avery, and Corey Maggette leaving early. Those three were major parts of the best Duke team of the past twenty years, despite the fact that they didn’t win it all because Coach K’s brilliant in game decision to have Trajan Langdon handle the ball against UConn’s pressure. Brand and Maggette didn’t come from money, and they made more than anyone they went to Duke with. Avery didn’t make it in the NBA, but he has been playing on top level European teams making good money despite K chewing out his mother for having her kid screw up his program.

WildDudeParticipantI agree with most of these comments, I have a lot of respect for Coach K… he prepares them for the real world, however he does not prepare them for the NBA which is what they all go to college for, they have to get there based on their own skill sets and be able to adapt to an NBA offense after they leave Duke. John Schyer, Brian Zoubek, Greg Paulus (although coach K should have let him take a shot at football too) , etc. are perfect Duke players because they have no chance in the NBA, however the likes of Nolan Smith, Casey Sanders, Sean Dockery, Lance Thomas, etc. are players who had incredible potential before entering college but have seen their careers derail over time… (the jury is still out on Nolan Smith).
Bottom line… Duke will choke as they always do, they need basically an all-star team to win it all.

QUINCEY^^^^i agree. i know you need the talentto play well together but duke gets all americans year in and year out and does win games but not as many titles as you would expect with all the talent he has coming through. on top of the fact there fans and some of the things they say that are uncalled for(i remember when it was learned that donald wiliams and rick fox was sleeping with phil fords while they would yell “have you driven a ford lately”) then you have dukie v alwayyyyys talking about them. but for me personally it was when they were -playing kentucky and and christan stepped on walter mccarty or andre riddicks chest, and is gone down hill from there
and how no one investigates the things coach k has done ( players parents getting incrediable low prices on places in the area)
on a coach cal note i wonder do any of ya’ll know what happen with camby?..well if you dont know here you go.. camby accepted money from NBA agent. not a booster that coach cal set him up with or a friend of the program but a nba agent… nothing to do with the coach. if i was a booster then there would be cause to question cal but is pretty known coachs dont deal with nba agents

HandDownManDown13ParticipantOk here’s my take as a duke fan. Duke’s a great
and successful program, I don’t think anyone will deny that. Many people love duke, many others hate them. If you aren’t a duke fan you naturally dislike them, due to their status, for lack of a better word. Like knicksfan said, it’s comparable to the Yankees. I oftentimes find myself hating on the lakers and the patriots, just because they win consistently every year. Now to adress my opinion on people calling some dukies overrated. Bballscout, how can you call zoubek overrated? Nobody thinks he’s good. The only people who appreciate him are duke fans. People constantly write him off for lacking athleticism or scoring skills, yet he still gets it done without many touches. The kid rebounds on the offensive glass at the 2nd highest rate in the country (behind only cousins). If he played on your team you’d love him.

QUINCEYi cant agree with the yankees thing in a way because they winn more titls like ucla. with all the talent duke has had coming through they have 3 or 4 titles?..i think its 3

Im Your FatherParticipantAs a Duke fan, I can actually understand people’s feelings about them, but there are still some things I take issue with.
1. The fact that everyone calls them out on choking, when there are other teams with much worse track records, both historically and recently. Prior to this tournament, everyone picked them to lose early, because they “had a history of choking.” What people fail to mention is that UK hasn’t made a final four in 12 years, and KU has lost 3 times in first 2 rounds while being a top 3 seed. I’m not saying Duke doesn’t sometimes lose before they should, but it seems as though they are the team that gets called out the most on it.
2. The NBA busts thing. Krzyzewski has put some great players in the league, including Grant Hill, who without injury would have been an all-time great. Every coach has busts, the idea that Duke doesn’t prepare players for the NBA is bullshit.
3. The Duke get’s every call logic. Wanna know the team that shot the most freethrows while being called for the least fouls this year in the ACC? THe answer is UNC. Duke does get some preferential treatment from the refs, JUST LIKE EVERY ELITE TEAM.
4. All the crap Duke is getting this year about having the easiest road in the tourney. Why is it Duke’s fault that all the other 1 seeds are losing? I don’t see how you can judge them for winning games they are supposed to. They still have to beat Baylor, which is by no means a given, then will they have played a tough enough schedule in the NCAA tournament to satisfy the critics?
Also, some of you are correct in saying that K slacked in recruiting for a couple years, I will not argue with that. But it is clear that he is stepping up his game once again, beginning with this years class.
Finally, why are the Plumlees overrated? I think from a purely unbiased perspective, it is hard to argue with the fact that Mason shows some excellent NBA potential. Is he a great player now? No, but he definitely has the potential to be. No one is saying that he is a superstar.

QUINCEYi dont think the brothers are overrated.. they dont get talked about enough to be considered overrated
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 8:41am #271807
midwestbbscoutParticipantthey don’t suck that was harsh….they are just overrated….Zoubek finally shows his face this year and people talk about him like sliced bread…..whoever picks Singler in the first round should be fired…..that’s the facts….
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 8:51am #271814
SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantZoubek might not have a good chance to go pro.. but he will at the very least be looked at.. 7’1″.. good rebounder.. good defender.. he will never be anything more than a big man off the bench but just due to his size and how well he has played as of late he has a shot.. maybe more than Scheyer..
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 8:59am #271824
midwestbbscoutParticipantis bad ass….whoever picks him will be satisfied for sure…..
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 9:00am #271825
QUINCEYbig man off the bench overseas… there have been plenty of 7’1 guys who were/are better then him who dont make it in the nba. prettuy much in college hes the biggest thing every game he plays in.. alot of times teams big men are 6’8 not as strong or not real athletic liek a nba big man
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 9:10am #271839
SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantMost likely Europe, yes, but NBA is not out of the question.. Out of curiosity, I’d like to hear some of these “plenty” of 7’1 guys who were/are better than him.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 9:11am #271840
SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantScheyer needs to start shooting.. like now.. if he wants to get drafted.. he’ll play in the summer leagues and fight for an NBA spot, but his shooting this tourny has been atrocious and I am sure scouts are noticing.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 9:13am #271844
QUINCEYyeah but as bothteamsplay hard showed from a article where scouts say the ncaa performances arent big with them as it is with fans. they already know what these players can do from scouting them all season. they know if a player can shoot or not if they are having a couple bad shooting games.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 7:58pm #272433
SpencerIsHawesome2ParticipantI agree with you on the Scheyer part, scouts do take a look mostly at the entire product not just the end result.. but playing well in the tourney shows scouts that you don’t let the pressure get to you and you don’t get rattled or nervous so easy which some may find important at the next level..
and also; nothing about the plenty of 7’1 guys better than zoubek?
0 - Posted on: Sun, 03/28/2010 - 10:12pm #272493
midwestbbscoutParticipantif the tourney isn’t important to them how come GM’s keep busting hard on guys who were on championship teams???? they’re so full of shit they’re like a diaper…..watch Shelvin Mack is going to start getting a ton of buzz after this Final 4….so will Kevin Jones…..
