I know mock drafts are fun at but I just don’t get why people do them at this time of year. It’s completely pointless for so many reasons.

    a) we’ve no idea where teams will be picking yet. I’m not just talking about the rest of the season I’m talking about the apparent lack of understanding of the basic statistic of the lottery. The team with the worst record gets a 25% chance at the number one pick. Every year I here people saying (already) "the Bucks are a lock for #1" or "Charlotte didn’t get the #1 pick, it’s rigged!" sorry about the rant but how to people not get this?? Statistically the worst finishing team will only get the number one pick once every four years!

    1. 250 combinations, 25.0% chance of receiving the #1 pick
    2. 199 combinations, 19.9% chance
    3. 156 combinations, 15.6% chance
    4. 119 combinations, 11.9% chance
    5. 88 combinations, 8.8% chance
    6. 63 combinations, 6.3% chance
    7. 43 combinations, 4.3% chance
    8. 28 combinations, 2.8% chance
    9. 17 combinations, 1.7% chance
    10. 11 combinations, 1.1% chance
    11. 8 combinations, 0.8% chance
    12. 7 combinations, 0.7% chance
    13. 6 combinations, 0.6% chance
    14. 5 combinations, 0.5% chance

The last time a team had the worst record and picked first was 2004.

    b) This means the lottery or any small changes in final record can massivley throw out everything but he top 5 or so picks as pick order changes and teams find themeselves with differnet players available or not so.

At this point it’s much better to just make a big board (which is essentially what this site does).

Stock is fluid and having an editable big board is both fun and beneficial in the time leading up to the lottery. Some people that don’t understand the process, but the majority that do generally put very little thought into the team name next to the number during March.

Having something in place that can be edited and refined as more information comes forth is far superior than starting from scratch in the middle of May or whenever the ping pong balls get drawn…IMO

I was just going to respond that mock drafts serve more as a stock watch at a particular point in the season than an actual attempt to get all the picks right. Much can change up until the draft, but it gives you an idea of how some scout are evaluating players.

It’s fun to think about. I like to imagine how the top players would fit in on certain teams. Why not?

Anyone else find it funny that the guy who made this post has a link to his own mock draft?

Look I don’t spend much time on the site, and yes I’ve played around with the mock becuase it’s fun, but to me it’s a big board – all I was saying. But thanks for all the feedback, I get why people do it a bit more now. I guess my main point was just annoyance at people not understanding the lottery, which in my defense, comes up a lot.

Ok, next year I have Jabari Parker staying at Duke, Joel Embiid staying at Kansas, Wayne Selden also staying at Kansas but requesting a new roommate, Dante Exum staying in Australia or an LA gym shooting baskets, Dario Saric staying in wherever Mister Saric is staying these days, McDougie going to the D League, Aaron Craft going to Europe’s version of the D League, Alex Poythress finally going to class, James McAdoo falling further into oblivion, and Philadelphia 76ers fans staying home.

Because when there are two cells unaccounted for and one bomb left in minesweeper, you click on one of them. It is a toy.

I will concede though that the "lottery is fixed" stuff has the chance to be as enfuriating as the "this draft is the greatest ever" nonsense from November.
